Lucien Baxter’s best and most incorrigible friend, Will, dies unexpectedly, leaving behind his new bride and unborn child the week before Christmas. Will’s last request is that Lucien watch over Cora, not just as a benefactor, but as a husband. When Lucien does his duty and proposes to Cora, he’s turned down flat. Over the course of the next twelve months, Lucien discovers that marrying Cora wouldn’t be any sort of duty after all, but a matter of following his heart.

My Review: 5 Stars
I don't think the opposites attract theory necessarily applies to strictly romances. Sometimes best friends are polar opposites and that's what makes them such good friends. That thought seems to make up Lucien and Will's friendship. Will is impulsive, outgoing, and larger than life, while Lucien is left to pick up the many pieces that Will leaves in his wake, yet their friendship works.
When Will suddenly dies, his last request is that Lucien take care of his wife and unborn child, which Lucien is more than happy to do. Cora has had such a heartbreaking past, but she's one strong and self-reliant woman. I love the gentle persuasion that occurs over time, and especially the role that music plays in this tender relationship.
It's not easy to create such a complete and tender story is so few pages, but this author manages to do just that and it's one that captured me heart and soul. It's refreshing to read a story set in England in this time period and is a very sweet book.
Content: innuendo (implied affairs), mild romance.
*I received a copy, which did not influence my thoughts in any way. All opinions are my own.*
