Candidate for Murder by Lauren Carr {Blog Tour Spotlight and Giveaway}

Candidate for Murder
by Lauren Carr

Book Description:

It’s election time in Spencer, Maryland, and the race for mayor is not a pretty one. In recent years, the small resort town has become divided between the local year-round residents who have enjoyed their rural way of life and the city dwellers moving into their mansions, taking over the town council, and proceeding to turn Deep Creek Lake into a closed gate community—complete with a host of regulations for everything from speed limits to clothes lines.

When the political parties force-feed two unsavory mayoral nominees on the town residents, Police Chief David O’Callaghan decides to make a statement—by nominating Gnarly, Mac Faraday’s German shepherd, to run as mayor of Spencer!

What starts out as a joke turns into a disaster when overnight Gnarly becomes the front runner—at which point his political enemies take a page straight out of Politics 101. What do you do when you’re behind in a race? Dig up dirt on the front runner, of course.

Seemingly, someone is not content to rest with simply embarrassing the front runner by publicizing his dishonorable discharge from the United States Army, but to throw in a murder for good measure. With murder on the ballot, Mac Faraday and the gang—including old friends from past cases—dive in to clear Gnarly’s name, catch a killer, and save Spencer!

Guest Post:

How to fall in love with your words by Michael B. Judkins

Have you ever experienced sudden dissatisfaction with your writing content? How about your subject title? Genre of writing? If so, hopefully, this will give some clarification or at least some suggestions to fall in love with your words. Although I refer to myself as an amateur writer in respect to the established writers in the world, I’m a published poet/author of 57 poems… it’s a level system (in my mind). Nevertheless, how did I fall in love with my words? I fell in love with my words simply by telling my own individual truth and journey of life. What’s that supposed to mean?

Your words are a piece of a puzzle to your journey of life. If you're writing a poem that captures sentimental meaning to you, write the poem based from your own experience or someone close to you. In fact, tailor the writing piece to each character or characters using different elements and messages from your own life path. Wait, that’s what I do every time I write a piece. Wrong!

Sometimes, as writers, the fantasy consumes the majority of the writing without recognition of truth. For example, in one of my pieces, The Ten Line Poem (The Forest), I wanted to portray that I can write a short poem of ten lines and deliver a stellar message to my audiences. After three revisions, slamming my writing pad on the ground and sobbing my eyes out during the creative process, the piece didn’t make sense to me, or what I wanted to deliver. I was trying to be someone else in my writing style.

So, by the fourth revisions, I walked outside of my apartment complex, and watched the trees in the moonlight. At that moment, the ten line poem was created. I used my own experience as a vessel to describe a tree in the Forest, alone and scared. How many people can relate to feeling alone and scared. Bingo! I fell in love with my words!! In conclusion, allow yourself to be yourself and write what moves you!

Author's Bio:

Michael Barry Judkins was born in the Bronx, New York, along with his four brothers and sisters. Michael’s childhood memories, although bittersweet, provided a rich foundation for him to draw upon later in life as an accomplished author.

Delightful memories of trips to the zoo or picking apples with his mother contrast greatly to daily reminders of what any hard-working family must battle in building a life in an urban setting. Domestic violence. Drugs. Gangs. All play their part in shaping a person – whether for good or bad is often an individual’s choice.

After spending years immersed in typical, reactive adolescent behaviors like skipping school, smoking and drinking, Michael began experimenting with other alternatives to developing new relationships and helping resolve social issues. As he took these first, proactive steps to be part of the solution, and not the problem, the germ of the idea for his first book – Sentimental Me – was born.

Graduating from high school a year early, and after a foray into the music business, Michael completed a BS degree in Human Services and MS in Mental Health Counseling. A daydreamer for as long as he can remember, Michael’s inability to forge a relationship with his beloved father before he passed when Michael was only two years old still haunts him today. His mother’s cherished memories of his father’s spirit and honored Armed Forces service, while providing some solace, also serve to make Michael wonder what might have been, if only…
Today, with several poetry collections and short stories in the works, Michael’s first release – Sentimental Me – displays his ability to wrest good from bad, to display the courage to dig deep within himself to help others. Through an inspired melding of his unique voice and inspiring photographic images of nature, Michael provides the reader with a unique perspective of the human condition, inspiring others to follow their own creative paths without boundaries.

Michael now resides in Allentown, P.A., and welcomes all readers to feel free to contact him at judkins_michal@yahoo.com to discuss your reaction to his work, or learn more about upcoming releases.

Making Faces by Amy Harmon {Review}

My good friend over at KJ's Book Nook is hosting a
Once Upon a Time...Beauty and the Beast Month.
Check it out here

Making Faces by Amy Harmon
Kindle Edition, 405 pages
Published October 20th 2013

Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy, and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My Review: 5 Stars

I bought this book awhile ago and it was recommended to me by a good book friend for a book challenge for 2016. I was immediately sucked in, blown away by this story, and I think my life has been forever changed. It's not my usual type of book, but I'm so glad that I read it--I just couldn't put it down! I love a Beauty and the Beast type of story and this one is fantastic.

Fern isn't your typical romance heroine. She's the only child of an older pastor and his wife, isn't pretty, and gets lost in the flow of high school life. Ambrose is a paragon. He's tall, gorgeous, nice, and the best upcoming wrestler Hannah Lake has ever seen. Bailey is Fern's cousin and has been facing death, due to disease, for years. His outlook on life, his attitude, and his daily encounters with those around him dug deep into my heart. These characters are real, raw, and inspiring. I can't stop thinking about this story, the life lessons that came from these pages, and these genuine characters.

9/11 is a moment in history that won't ever be forgotten and to read about a story that takes place during that time and the things that happen to these individuals because of those events are heart rending, tender, and captivating.

The writing style is so engaging and amazing. The words flow in such a way that pierce the soul. There are so many great thoughts and the events that occur within these pages stimulate the whole spectrum of emotions. I just don't have the words to express how much this book touched me. This is my first Amy Harmon book and I guarantee--it won't be my last.

Content: There is more content than I prefer, but for me, the story is so worth being told, that these issues can be overlooked for the most part. If you're a squeaky clean reader, this one probably won't be for you.
Moderate language (teenage boys, soldiers)--no F*bombs, but a lot of other words; mild-moderate violence (physical abuse, death, war-type violence but not overly graphic); mild-moderate romance elements (kissing, some brief touching, a few crass jokes, innuendo, unwed pregnancies with no details).

Buxton Peak -- Book One: Who Is Ian Taylor? by Julie L. Spencer {Review}

Buxton Peak -- Book One: Who Is Ian Taylor?

Ian just wanted to be loved for who he was on the inside…

When he meets Megan, a small town college girl at church in a remote part of Michigan, he figures out pretty quickly that she knows nothing about him. So he makes the decision to hide his fame from her.

His plan backfires when Megan finds out who he really is and decides she doesn’t want to live her life in his spotlight, with all the baggage that comes with it. She just wants to live a quiet life in rural Michigan with a normal husband and family.

Can she forgive Ian for his deception (and embarrassing her on live television)? Is she willing to give up her dreams in order to follow his? Or will Ian throw away everything he’s achieved to stay in her life?

My Review: 3.5 Stars

There's something intriguing about a story involving an normal, every-day girl and a world famous rock star--especially when both are LDS (Mormons). It's easy to root for their relationship to thrive and to cheer them on.

Megan is a college student who is so involved in her studies that she has no idea who the famous boy band (Buxton Peak) from England is. Ian may be a famous rocker, but he's religious and wants to be loved for himself and not for his image. Who doesn't want that?

I felt such great potential for this book and found it delivered what I was expecting at times. However, there were other moments when I wanted just a few more believable details in this unbelievable tale. Personally, I roll my eyes when a character declares to be in love with someone, just as she openly admits that she hardly knows a thing about him and what she does know, doesn't impress her. When I tossed that out the window and just focused on the fun and fantasy of the story, I did enjoy it. This story took me back to my teen years and how I used to daydream about something like this happening to me.

It's nice to know that the author isn't afraid of confronting issues that face young adults today--standing up for your religion, making choices about waiting for intimate relations until after marriage, and being who you are.

Content: moderate religious elements, specific to the LDS (Mormon) church and a few parts are a little preachy, but mostly just explaining why the characters choose the marry where they do and what they believe in; mild romance (very mild kissing with fade to black way in advance). Clean!

A Date with Danger by Kari Iroz {Blog Tour Review and Giveaway}

A Date with Danger by Kari Iroz
Kindle Edition, 256 pages
Published June 1st 2016 by Covenant Communications

She just wanted to shake up her love life. Jacklyn (Jack) Wyatt is the typical twenty-five-year-old living the typical Provo single life with the typical bad luck—at least until the FBI recruits her for a completely different type of dating.

A young woman has gone missing, and all signs point to her online dating profile as the kidnapper’s operating ground. But when suspects who crossed paths with the missing girl begin contacting Jack, the FBI sees its opportunity for an inside man—er, woman.

Now Jack will have to play the field, dating each of the men in an attempt to weed out the kidnapper. But with such an unusual array of characters vying for her attention, pinpointing the culprit may prove even harder than finding Mr. Right. And as more young women disappear, will Jack stay professional and objective, even with the handsome Special Agent Damon Wade just a whisper in her hidden microphone away?

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My Review: 4 Stars

A Date with Danger starts out as your typical LDS fluff fiction, but quickly takes an interesting turn. Jacklyn (aka Jack) is 25 and starting to feel a little like a spinster, but a few run-ins with a mysterious man lead to her working as a spy, of sorts, for the FBI.

I'm not good in situations that leave me vulnerable and have to admire Jack and the way she handles so many blind dates, all generated from an online dating service, when one of the men is potentially a serial kidnapper. Jack is blunt, yet has a way about her that evokes humor. I laughed, I groaned, I cringed, and I smiled at the antics that result from Jack's situations and experiences.

Damon is a very straight-laced, yet handsome, agent and rubs Jack the wrong way for a time. He sure is committed to his job and when the lines become blurred, the outcome is more trouble than either of them bargains for.

This story ranges from serious to scary to fun to silly and I enjoyed each and every date, as I , along with Jack and Damon, tried to figure out who the villain is and why. This is a fun and entertaining journey and I was left guessing until the end. Things wrapped up a little too quickly for me, and not just with figuring out the "who-done-it." There are some issues that each character is dealing with and the resolution is fast (not that I wanted long and drawn out--just a little more inner dialog to understand thoughts).

Content: mild romance (some very mild innuendo, mild kissing); mild violence (kidnapping, threats); mild-moderate religious elements specific to the LDS church (a few prayers and other events specific to religion). Clean!

Ranch Hand for Auction by Kimberly Krey {Review}

Ranch Hand for Auction by Kimberly Krey

Expected publication: June 27th 2016 by Candle House Publishing

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30182394-ranch-hand-for-auction?from_search=true&search_version=service

**This is part of the Curl Up With a Cowboy Anthology**

Meg left her Montana home, earned her bachelor’s degree, and lived out her dream of selling her art. But now her life is in limbo. Stay in Colorado with a man who won’t commit, or call it quits and move back to her home state. Her answer comes in the form of Jake Billings, a woman-courting, dimple-sporting cowboy her father bids on at the county fair. The auctioned ranch hand is meant to help Meg process grapes on her father’s land, but along the way he steals her heart. Can Meg trust this sudden shift in direction, or will she be drawn back to the man she left behind?

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My Review: 5 Stars

Ms. Krey really knows how to write a sweet and swoony love story, whether it's full-length or novella. I absolutely loved this one!

Meg left home to pursue her education in Denver. Dating Michael seems the right thing to do, but after years, he refuses to commit--even to an exclusive relationship. I feel sorry for Meg, since that seems to be a waste of her life. Why would he change and put her first if she can convince him to marry her? She may be a little clueless, but she's adorable, loyal, and hard working.

Jake is a good-looking ranch hand who gets to work on Meg's father's ranch for a week after she won him in an auction. He's flirty and charismatic, but he's done with his womanizing ways. His swagger is hard to resist. I just adored him and his cowboy ways. He's such a gentleman!

The characters in this clean story wormed their ways right into my heart. I love the banter and the way they work together. I love the simple life that is portrayed in this novella, especially when Meg talks about how her art pieces centered around this life sell the best--it's clear that others long for that type of life as well. The romance is very well done, as it always is with Ms. Krey.

This is highly recommended for those who love a good, clean, contemporary "cowboy" romance.

Content: mild romance (kissing); mild language (cowboy swear words). Clean!

Sheltered in His Arms by Tara Taylor Quinn Release Blitz with Giveaway

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Welcome to the Audiobook Release Blitz for
Sheltered in His Arms
By Tara Taylor Quinn

About the Audiobook Release

I’m an avid reader. And with my 75th book publishing in a few days, I’m an avid writer, too. And yet there was one aspect of storytelling to which I was completely ignorant. Absent. I didn’t get it. The world of audiobooks.

And then, a few years ago, I was given a free audiobook from one of my favorite authors. I put it on iPod more to be polite than anything else. The book was a gift, I’d listen out of respect. Then, I figured, I’d go buy the book and read it so that I could get my full enjoyment out of the story.

That didn’t happen. Instead, as happens so many times in my life, my ignorance turned to understanding. And an entire new world opened up to me. I’d planned to listen to a few words on my daily commute and then switch to the music that always saw me safely down the road. Imagine my conundrum when, for that whole week, all I wanted to do was commute! I couldn’t wait to get in the car and get back to my friends.

And now, this week, I have the honor of bringing you one of my own books in audio format! Sheltered In His Arms is a unique story. It’s about a man who made a huge mistake. It’s about the people he loves. The people who once loved him. And it’s about healing. I hope you’ll give it a listen! I personally chose the narrator based on audition recordings and she does a great job. I promise friends to sit in the car with you as you get to where you need to be!
