Excerpt:

As the FBI took their first steps toward the school, Dennis held his arm out. “Steady.”

After about five steps, he lit a rag hanging out of the first cocktail, let the flame grow and lobbed it over the rail, away from the FBI agents, but close enough to catch their attention. He raised his head over the banister and watched as the bottle exploded into a fireball. The FBI agents jumped and rolled away from the bomb. Dennis didn’t see them being thrown, but following his cocktail, a handful of garbage bombs sailed through the air, exploding in flight. The garbage spewed, and a banana peel and what looked like eggshells splattered the biggest bureau member and the goop slid down his face.

Dennis snickered. Banana-peel-head reached for his radio.

“We’re under attack. Request revised orders stat.”

So the big guy was Gravel-man. One of the pumpkins blew, adding pumpkin seeds and the rest of the pumpkin brains to the garbage already covering him. The stem and part of the pumpkin top twirled through the air toward Gravel-man’s head. He ducked to keep it from hitting him.

Dennis’s crew waited for his signal. The plan involved waiting to see how the FBI handled the first strike. Their crews had ammo, but not for long. If the FBI started to move in again, Rhonda would pelt out a few more garbage bombs, and if they kept coming his crew would launch more firebombs.

The FBI backed off, waiting on orders, and he ducked when an agent pulled out binoculars to scan the building.

* * *

Rhonda flattened against the wall to hide from the binoculars. That—was—awesome. What was the penalty for sliming an FBI agent? She pressed a hand over her mouth to keep a giggle from coming out. The surprise on Gravel-man’s face when the garbage had hit him followed by the pumpkin exploding—priceless. The agents had retreated out of bomb range to get additional orders.

My Review: 4.5 Stars

My advice is to read these books in order to get the full effect.

It felt like the book was divided into two parts: baking and weddings. Julia is finally fulfilling a dream of owning a bakery and isn't it funny that it took Jared (through unconventional ways) to help her achieve it? She secretly auditions for a cupcake TV show and let me just say, those cupcakes sounded incredibly delicious, so don't read this while you're hungry. Not only is Julia dealing with all of the stress of baking, but both her sister and her best friend have upcoming weddings.

I love that Julia is so imperfect, especially in her reactions to situations. I had to laugh out loud because she made a colossally huge mistake: she googled something that you shouldn't ever do. Yes, I recently did something similar and found that I was dying (not true). My point is that her faults make her very easy to relate to because I think most readers can find a piece of themselves in Julia, whether it be insecurities or successes...or anything in between. The humor is once again the icing on the cake (no pun intended) and the romance is realistic.

This sequel was fun and sassy and brought Julia to life just a little bit more. I can't wait to move on to the next book to see what could possible happen next because this chick-lit is a treat.

Content: mild language; mild romance

Mine for a Day by Delaney Cameron {Book Blast and Giveaway}

Mine for a Day by Delaney Cameron

Growing up in the shadow of three beautiful sisters isn’t easy when you’re average. Not that anyone in Violet’s family ever mentions it, but it’s pointed out to her again and again by everyone else. Guys don’t mind talking to her or hanging out with her, but she doesn’t make the cut as girlfriend material. She compensates for her lack of social life by staying busy. Holding down two jobs and working on her master’s degree is a decent enough smokescreen. What most people don’t realize is that her sensible, no-nonsense exterior hides the heart of a hopeless romantic. More than anything, Violet wants to love and to be loved. There was a time when Jackson looked forward to getting married and having a family, but all that ended his senior year of college. Because of the selfish actions of others, he had to walk away from someone he cared deeply about. Disillusioned and heartbroken, he resolved never to risk falling in love again. This means keeping his relationships short in length and light on commitment. As such, they never come close to touching his heart. This system works flawlessly until he meets Violet; someone who reminds him of what he used to be, and who makes him question whether he really is better off without love.

Praise for the Book
A "chance" meeting between Jackson and Violet leads them to a relationship that frees them from their hurting hearts and to a love that makes for a life worth living. Loved the line "The seemingly insignificant things are never unimportant, and chance meetings have little to do with chance." A most enjoyable romance from Delaney Cameron! Easily one of my favorite authors. I especially like how she shows the development of the relationship for our hero & heroine. A sweet, sweet romance. A beautiful story of unexpected love.

Excerpt
One minute Violet was listening to her newest audiobook; the next she was staring in horror at the busted grille and sagging bumper of a pearly-white Land Rover.
“I’m so sorry,” she said to the serious-looking man walking toward her. “I can’t think how it happened.”
“Can’t you?” his deep voice drawled. “Maybe I can help you figure it out. Were you texting your boyfriend?”
She couldn’t help smiling at his question. The fact that she didn’t have a boyfriend had been a popular topic over the Memorial Day weekend. If she hadn’t been aware of the direness of this situation before, she had no doubts about it now. “No, I wasn’t. Would you like to check my phone?”
He ignored her attempt at humor, choosing instead to inspect the damage to their respective vehicles. The situation reminded her of a show she’d seen recently where a dating expert illustrated different ways to meet men. Running into their car had been one of the more humorous examples. Violet couldn’t have executed this plan any better if she tried, nor could she complain about the result.
The man crouching next to her ten-year-old Fiat was tall enough to make even her feel short. That didn’t happen often when you were five-eleven. His striped polo shirt and jeans fit his wide shoulders and narrow hips like a glove. Costa sunglasses rested in his light brown hair, and his eyes were the color of polished steel. In the words of her Aunt Anita, he was the cat’s meow.
He rose to his feet, dusting off his hands. “This isn’t your first rodeo, is it?”
“Actually, it is. With the exception of today, the rest of those scratches and dents were there when I inherited Leonie.”
For the first time since he stepped out of his vehicle something close to humor entered his handsome face. “In other words, you probably won’t bother to have it, I mean Leonie, repaired.”
Her lips twitched at the correction. “That’s right. Shouldn’t we be calling the police?”
“I don’t think that’s necessary. I’ve got a friend who owns a body shop.”
She reached into her purse. “Let me give you my insurance information.”
“Don’t worry about it,” he said, turning to walk away.
“But it’s my fault. I should have been paying attention.”
He stopped and glanced over his shoulder, an attractive grin forming on his lips. “I agree, but there’s no point in raising your insurance rates over what amounts to a fender bender. Just watch where you’re going from now on. The owner of the next car you back into might not be so distracted by that pretty smile of yours.”
Distracted by her pretty smile? Where had that come from? He’d gone from ice cold to oozing charm in ten seconds. Some people just couldn’t make up their minds.
After giving him a decent head start, Violet left the rest area. Her clean accident record was still intact, but only because of Mr. Wonderful’s kindness. If she hadn’t been so tired from three days of nonstop activity, she might not have done such a stupid thing.
From the moment she arrived at Millicent’s house in Chattanooga on Friday afternoon, she’d been swept up in all the activities of a reunion weekend with a few of her college friends. This included several late-night sessions where everyone provided details about the current man in their life. Violet’s contribution had been sadly lacking.
A quick glance at her phone confirmed that she wouldn’t roll into Columbus until almost ten. She would have been further along if she hadn’t stopped in Dalton. The sight of a Carter’s outlet store had been too much of atemptation to pass up. She’d spent a happy hour browsing the racks and shelves buying baby clothes for her nephew Micah and her friend Holly’s daughter Rebecca.
Hopefully Rachel remembered to feed Bluebell. Her best friend and roommate had become increasingly absentminded since she met Pierre, an exchange student from France. Not that Violet could blame her. If she hada guy whispering sweet nothings in French into her ear, she’d walk around with her head in the clouds, too.
A sigh escaped her lips. Her own Prince Charming didn’t seem to be in any hurry to make an appearance. Her dating life had gone from a dribble to a dry creek bed. She hadn’t given up on finding love, but she was starting to wonder if love had given up on her.

Author Delaney Cameron I'm a Georgia girl at heart if not by birth. I love to read, watch college football, and spend time with my husband. I'm a hopeless romantic so there will always be a happily ever after in my stories. I also like to write about second chances because love doesn't always work out the first time. My books are sweet romances set in both contemporary and regency settings featuring stories about the journey to love, from that first meeting to the point where two people know their hearts are no longer their own. My characters aren't perfect. They make mistakes and have faults like the rest of us. They learn the sometimes painful truth that the path to love isn't always smooth, but it's a road worth traveling.

My Review: 4 Stars

I love this sweet Southern romance that revolves around a family mansion. Grace is an orphan and wants nothing more than to fix up her family home, although others are trying to convince her to sell. When Harrison shows up to help her out and to protect her, she's excited because he's her favorite former college football player.

I love how each book in this series has an element of mystery and this one is no exception. The threats and danger are real, yet I wish they would have been played up a bit more because Cami Checketts is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors and I would have loved just a bit more, especially as the ending felt a little rushed.

Grace is a brave woman, with her dreams driving her, because I would have given up at the first sign of opposition. However, she does have a few flaws, which really makes her more realistic. She gets so mad that Harrison is there because his boss asked him to go and is paying him. Why else would he be there, since they've never met before? My heart did break for her a little because not only are her parents passed, but she has no siblings and seems to have no close friends.

Harrison is big, courageous, gentle, gracious, and sweet, but he's got a few endearing flaws of his own, as he has a hard time putting his words together and often bumbles situations. I adored him and his family a lot, especially cute little Turk, his nephew.

This has been a series worth reading and each other has provided a stellar offering for the set. This is perfect for those who love a sweet romance with a dash of suspense.

Content: mild+ romance (kissing, some innuendo); moderate Christian elements; mild violence.

Snippet:

The door to the workroom opened and the young princess entered. Her hair was as black as midnight and adorned with a simple gold circlet. Her skin, the color of moonlight, appeared even lighter against the dark blue fabric of her gown. But her most striking feature was her lips the color of ripe strawberries.
"I heard yelling," she said.
"I dropped something. I didn't mean to disturb you, your highness," Anessa answered.
"That's a lovely necklace. Do you need help putting it on?"
"Yes. I'll ring for one of the maids."

"Oh, they'll never come. They're too afraid of being turned into a toad by the Witch Queen." She clasped a hand to her mouth. "I'm sorry. You're her. I meant no offense. They'll do anything you ask. They're just afraid of magic after what happened to Mother."

Saving Shadow (The Beckett Files #1) by Laura Beers {Review}

Saving Shadow (A Regency Spy Romance)
by Laura Beers
ebook
Published September 1st 2017 by Phase Publishing

Born with a perfect memory, Lady Elizabeth Beckett has become one of the world's most notorious spies, despite being the daughter of a duke. She is shielded only by her code name: Shadow. When young ladies of High Society begin disappearing from London, Eliza has no doubt who is orchestrating these crimes; a heinous man she has been investigating for years. Vowing to save them before they are sold to the highest bidder, she must risk everything to stop him.

Lord Sinclair was perfectly content being the second son of a marquess, but when his brother is murdered, he is thrust into a position he has not been prepared for and does not desire. As an agent for the Crown, he is expected to retire now that he is the heir, but he's been granted special permission for one more mission... to obtain justice for his murdered brother.

Used to keeping secrets, Lady Eliza and Lord Sinclair must learn to open up to each other when they are assigned as partners to bring down the same ruthless man and his brutal empire of abduction and slavery. As Eliza's tainted past becomes too much for her to bear alone, can she learn to trust her new partner with her secrets, her life, and possibly her heart?

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My Review: 4 Stars

I don't know that I've ever read a Regency book with an upper crust spy who is a woman. Elizabeth, or Eliza (or even Shadow) is a spy for the Crown. I assumed that those types of spies served in foreign affairs or in wartime capacities, but that's not the case in this novel. This group of spies is trying to stop human trafficking, which I thought was interesting for the time period. I honestly can't imagine how it would be have to do the things that Eliza did and like always.

Although this story's dialogue and observations have a more modern feel to them, it is a fun tale that's full of danger and attraction. I found myself stuck on that gold dress that was embellished with crushed rubies and would love to see something like that in person. I loved getting to know the characters, and especially their roles played in the book.

I found it to be a fascinating dilemma--would you rather be titled or a spy? Lord Sinclair doesn't seem to have a choice and I would be happy to leave the stress behind, but that's not quite the case with him. On that note, why wouldn't Eliza want to give up a life of danger for a marriage? These characters are obviously more daring than I am, but it was sure fun to like vicariously through them for a time.

When the police inform him that he’s a suspect in Emma’s mysterious disappearance, James sells his beloved motorcycle to buy a boat so he can find Emma and prove his innocence before going on trial for a murder he didn’t commit.

With destiny against them, it’s only a matter of time before both are imprisoned forever.

Snippet:

“What is fire? How does it change a fish?” Maia planted herself on a stool near Emma’s dressing table, riveted by details of another way of life. “Will you tell me all about the land? Tell me where you’ve come from and the ways of human people, and I will show you where you belong and the ways of the Mer.”
Thoughts of James and her family engulfed Emma, stealing her ability to talk, and move, and exist underwater. Everything here was different, even language. The Mer would never understand what she’d lost, because they didn’t understand emotions the way she did, and some feelings couldn’t be explained. But maybe if she told someone, unloaded some of the burden, she would at least find the strength to go on.
She rolled onto her side and faced Maia over the edge of her hammock. “Fire is like holding captive a slice of the sun.”
“But the sun is dangerous, my Princess, as is the air.”
Emma remembered the warmth on her shoulders, the brightness in her eyes and the breeze in her hair as she drove her convertible up the coast. How it felt to breathe, to recognize scents and feel the difference in altitude whenever she went anywhere far. The sweltering heat of dry sand beneath her feet, grass under her fingers, the cool, rough stones in her cove that lacked formations and moss. She remembered the fear of her past, the pain of fists connecting with her face and body, the stabbing wounds inflicted every time judging eyes trailed her in the halls at school, and finally understood that what had happened then was part of another lifetime.
That was before. Before James had come into her life and forced her to feel again. Made her proud to be who she was, regardless of what that meant. Her past had no bearing on her future, and only as little or as much meaning to her true self as she allowed.
“The sun is a wonder, Maia.” She rose from her hammock and used the mini-spear—intended for opening clams—to draw a round sun on the sandy floor. “Glorious and warm. A bright orange ball in the sky that forces people outside, urges plants to grow, and heats the surface of land.”
A memory James flashed in her mind—the fervor in his eyes, the security of his embrace, and the ferocity with which he’d defended her and Keith, despite her initial resistance to his advances. “The sun and its fire can transform water into air. It burns with the zap of an eel, and squeezes as the tentacles of an octopus around your middle. It can turn white skin red, and then make it fall off, leaving behind pale, new layers.”
Maia shifted, but her attention remained riveted on the circular pattern Emma carved into the sand. “I don’t believe I would like fire.”
“Fire dwells inside me,” Emma told her, entranced by her own hypnotic drawing. “Fire. Not water. I have to find a way to go home.”
