Book Tour Review: The Lady Glass by Anneka R. Walker

The Lady Glass by Anneka R. Walker

Nothing shapes glass like fire.

Theresia Dvorak has nothing left of her parents—nothing save her dowry, a priceless crystal vase stolen and sold by her own stepmother. Theresia will do anything to secure what is rightfully hers—even assume a false identity and steal her future back. When she gains entrance to a house party and has a memorable run-in with the handsome naval captain Rolland Reese, her mission is compromised. She swore never to trust an Englishman again, but when he makes a daring proposal she cannot refuse, she must work side by side with him if either of them is to achieve their aim.

Rolland is stunned when his homecoming from the war takes a decidedly deadly turn. The quickest solution is to throw a house party and invite all the suspects. With the stakes incredibly high, Rolland must root out the killer before they turn their sights to the next potential victim: his own father. The mysterious Theresia is undoubtedly the most suspicious of his guests, but against all odds, he finds himself risking everything to protect her. As Rolland unravels a tangle of clues, he faces the greatest threats of all: a heart of fire and a future as fragile as glass.

My Review: 5 Stars

"Why are you keeping a woman under your bed, Rolland?"

I adore a fairytale retelling that is full of unique aspects and twists, and when a mystery is added to this Regency Cinderella? I'm all in. From the very first meet cute to the very last page, I was invested in the characters, the romance, and the secrets.

Theresa, a violinist, has a very difficult step-family and is determined to find a stolen crystal vase that her father left her. There is a killer on the loose and Rolland and his friends decide to host a house party to contain the suspects and try to stop another death from occurring. This duo works and reasons together so well. Theresa agrees to pose under a false name to help them as a spy and I loved the vibe that results from this whodunit tale. I felt like I was watching a historical Clue game in real-time and it was so much fun to see everything unfold. And I loved the glimpses of Godfather.

This author does a great job of weaving together complexities that are both entertaining and engaging. I also found myself laughing at Theresa's spunk and swooning over the dangerous interactions. Such a fun story that left me with a satisfied smile on my face.

Blog Tour Review: The Girl From the Hidden Forest by Hannah Linder

The Girl From the Hidden Forest by Hannah Linder

Blurb:

The nightmares may free her…but destroy the man she loves.

Enjoy another Gothic Style Regency from Hannah Linder.

Eliza Ellis has stayed hidden in Balfour Forest for as long as she can remember. Perhaps her only friends are the trees, or her little dog, or her story-telling father called Captain. But at least she is safe from the cruel world outside, a world Captain has warned her against and protected her from.

That is, until a handsome stranger named Felton Northwood invades her quiet forest and steals her away. Why does he tell such lies? Why does he insist that her name is Miss Eliza Gillingham, daughter of a viscount, who disappeared fourteen years ago after the murder of her own mother? A murder Eliza is said to have witnessed.

When Felton returns Eliza to Monbury Manor and reunites her with a man who is told to be her father, all she remembers are the strange nightmares that have plagued her since childhood. Why have they suddenly grown worse? Are the answers hidden inside her own mind?

As danger mounts and lethal attempts are made on her life, Eliza and Felton must work together to uncover the identity of a killer who has stayed silent for fourteen years. When she finally uncovers the horrendous memories trapped in her mind, will divulging the truth cost her the man she loves—and both of their lives?
 My Review: 4 Stars

This is my first book by hannahlinder and I was captivated by the intense gothic regency vibe.

Eliza has happily lived in the forest for as long as she can remember and it’s all she knows, until handsome Felton finds her and “rescues” her from it. A world of danger, intrigue, “who dun it” mysteries and attempts on Eliza’s life result from this deliverance, and a beautiful, dramatic, and heart-aching story unfolds.

I was amazed at the vivid descriptions and while this story felt a little darker, I was completely fascinated and intrigued from start to finish with all the twists and turns. I appreciated the Christian elements and felt they really solidified the nature of these dimensional characters.

There is a lot of drama and trauma, and these times are confusing to Eliza, but Linder does a wonderful job of expressing the villainous aspects, as well as the heroic ones, in ways that felt real and raw.

Content: kidnapping, opium use, mistreating family, Christian elements (prayers/thoughts), mild romance, murder/death/suicide/abuse

My Review: 5 Stars

Oh, how I love a good arranged marriage and when a royal is thrown in, I'm all over it. Prince Marc and Rhianna seem to hit it off immediately, despite their trepidations, but he just can't commit. I devoured every single interaction between these two and wanted to shake some sense into the prince.

Rhianna is a very likable character and I could feel her eagerness and anticipation of her new situation, as well as her dedication and loyalty to what she's leaving behind. The slight Cinderella vibe with some twists and turns pierced my heart and kept me turning the pages.

Then we have the handsome, sweet, and utterly adorable prince. Marc is an overly devoted man, almost thinking of others too much and overthinking possible scenarios that may or may not happen, but his humor and connection to Rhi is what dreams are made of. This was everything I hoped it would be and more.

I loved the setting and the slew of princes had my heart melting. There are some amazing stories in store for each of them and I'm here for them. Johnson does a phenomenal job of creating a story worth reading and dreaming of.

My Review: 5 Stars

What a darling set of stories, all with a wallflower theme. I loved the settings and picturing the situations.

I love these collections because each author has a slightly different writing style, but the common thread ties them all together, and for me, it was really hard to choose a favorite.

From a girl who freezes up with anxiety when talking to people, to a girl who wants to win a bet, to a girl with a secret, each story was such a fun delight and so entertaining. I loved the characters and the unique ways a wallflower was interpreted brought me some smiles and swoons.

Each one of these novellas in this collection earned a definite 5 stars from me!

Julia (Women of Worcester Book 2) by Julie Matern {Book Review}

Julia (Women of Worcester Book 2) by Julie Matern

Julia Deverell is a talented musician with a secret. Alexander Trevellyan threatens to expose that secret. Can they come to some agreement? Will they fall in love in the process?

When Julia Deverell plays the piano, everyone is entranced, even the handsome stranger who guesses her secret. But when she hears that he has criticized her method in public she declares him public enemy number one. However, when circumstances force them together, she cannot deny he possesses an undeniable charisma. If only she had not determined to dislike him.

Alex is a classical music student at Oxford. Music is not one of the approved careers for second sons and he endures lifelong ridicule, but his exceptional talent dictates the future course of his life. When he attends his aunt’s party and hears Julia play, he is mesmerized until she makes an error and he guesses her secret. Envy drives him to criticize her in the hearing of another guest but almost immediately he regrets his action and vows never to let petty jealousy get the better of him again.

When asked to play a duet with Julia by his aunt, an irrefutable attraction sparks but Julia seems determined to ignore it and shun him. Can he convince her to give him a chance?

Julia is the second novella in the Women of Worcester series.

My Review: 4 Stars

I love music and wish I would've stuck with the piano. Julia is an extremely talented pianist but has a secret to her method and Alex figures it out almost immediately. I loved his cocky attitude and her insecurities, and it was so much fun to watch them learn to play together. Their interactions were so delightful!

The Women of Worcester series is all about strong and slightly unconventional women. I enjoyed reading about not only the experiences that the piano gave to Julia but the relationship and romance that resulted.

Olivia by Julie Matern {Book Review}

Olivia by Julie Matern

She is an over-educated bluestocking who has never met a debate she did not like. He is the boy next door. Will she realize the perfect man is right in front of her?

Olivia is the oldest of the four, beautiful Deverell sisters. She is also a reformed tomboy whose best friend is the earl next door. But she has reached the age where she is expected to marry—and her sisters can’t ‘come out’ until she does. Philosophy, politics and debate of any subject are the tools of her trade but these might not get her far among the social elite of London.

With little enthusiasm for her season, she has a change of heart when she learns that an eminent young scientist will also be in town. Orchestrating events to meet him, she is surprised when he invites her to help him with his work. Could this be a match made in heaven?

Olivia is Book 1 in the Women of Worcester series.
My Review: 4 Stars
It's always fun for me to read a series about a family and Olivia is the eldest sister and her story is Book 1 in the series.

Olivia is smart and what could be considered a bluestocking. Since she must marry, she's determined to do it her way and can't see what's right in front of her face.

I found this story to be short, sweet, and enjoyable. Matern does a good job with the characters and the situations they find themselves in. It's always interesting to see how invested other family members could be at the time. The road to true love isn't always visible or easy, and it was amusing to read about Olivia's experiences. I'm now curious to read about the rest of the family.

Games in a Ballroom by Jentry Flint {Book Review}

Games in a Ballroom by Jentry Flint

London, 1815

Olivia Wilde has resigned herself to never finding a love match. Her father has insisted she marry a man with a title, but the men her father deems acceptable are either boring or are only interested in increasing their own diminishing coffers. But he has a plan that may give him a chance to court her in secret.

As the Season kicks off, Emerson proposes a playful game of tag. Olivia’s friends are delighted by the idea, though Olivia is wary. After all, the game must be played in secret as they tag each other at dinners and balls. As the romance builds between Olivia and Emerson, so does the risk of being discovered. Not only are their reputations at stake, so is their safety if they are caught by Olivia’s strict father.

Can their love find a happily ever after before the game ends?

My Review: 4 Stars

Sometimes the flirtatious banter and games is a lot of fun and something it comes across as too lighthearted. This story was a mixture of both. Emerson and Olivia have been friends since childhood and now big decisions are ready to be made. Do you stay loyal to your father or your heart?

The ballroom games really did provide a lot of entertainment and it was easy to picture myself in the ballroom as a late teen/young adult, but at times, it was hard to take Emerson seriously because it seemed all was in jest and his true motives were disguised. His spontaneous decisions did allow for some very hilarious moments though, and I did find myself smiling and laughing more than I was expecting to.

I enjoyed the delightful cast of characters and although I would have loved a dash more of romance, it was sweet and satisfying.

The Valet's Secret by Josi S. Kilpack {Book Review}

The Valet's Secret by Josi S. Kilpack
Paperback
, 288 pages
Published March 8th 2022 by Shadow Mountain

A passionate kiss from a handsome valet becomes a Regency Cinderella story when he is revealed to be the heir to the earldom.

York, England, 1819

As a once happily married woman, Rebecca Parker had a good life, but now widowed, working for a living, and her only child grown, she feels invisible, tired, and lonely. That is until the day a valet speeding by on a horse nearly runs her off the road. Mr. Malcolm Henry is apologetic, gentle, and handsome. She’s instantly drawn to him, which is why, rather than stopping him from kissing her, she kisses him back, reigniting a nearly forgotten passion. But love at first sight only happens in fairy tales—never to an ordinary woman like her.

She sees Mr. Henry again and feels the possibilities growing until, while working in the kitchens during a dinner party, she sees the valet she kissed sitting at the right hand of the baroness. Mr. Henry is not the earl’s valet; he is the heir to the earldom—Kenneth Winterton.

Heartbroken, angry, and betrayed, Rebecca does not trust Lord Winterton and refuses to accept his apology. But when Lord Winterton proves he is as kind and gentle as “Mr. Henry” was, she finds herself willing to give him a second chance. But will he take a chance on her? He needs a wife to help him in his place in society, and nothing about Rebecca's life does that . . . except how he feels when she is with him.

Trust, love, loneliness, and passion collide in this story about a man who will risk it all to fight for the woman he loves and a woman who does not believe in fairy tales—until she finds herself living in one.

 My Review: 5 Stars

Josi Kilpack has a magical way of pulling me into her books and this one was no exception. I'm not a big fan of reading about couples my age or older for some reason, and although Kenneth (48) and Rebecca (42) are right in there, it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would and I was rooting for them to find love, happiness, and companionship once again.

I love how this author tackles more difficult topics and things not written about as much in the Regency time period and with a stretch of the imagination, this story delivers a Cinderella feel to a couple mismatched in status, but the electrifying first meeting had me desperate for more.

Kenneth is someone who came to his title later and is grappling to find his footing in a world so foreign and Rebecca is stumbling to find security after discovering the true nature of her father. Yet they each complement each other in only the best ways possible and their meetings and interactions were simply wonderful.

I loved the flow and progression of the story and even the villainous characters were well-written, drawing up a lot of feelings and emotion. I loved wallowing in the depths of hope. This book was so much fun and was very entertaining, especially with the surprising hints of swoon.

Convincing Charlotte by Julie Matern {Review}

Convincing Charlotte by Julie Matern

Charlotte Abernathy has met the man of her dreams, Henry Westbrook. Though Henry is currently not a wealthy man, his great aunt appears set to make him her heir. The stage is set for a love-match.

However, disaster strikes in more than one quarter and the lovers are torn apart by forces outside their control.

Henry leaves to seek his fortune, after which he promises to return for Charlotte, but a dastardly scheme sews seeds of doubt in the pair, dividing them by distance and circumstance.

Will they be divided forever or will fate take pity on them?

427 pages, Kindle Edition

First published May 1, 2021

My Review: 4 Stars

Life and love aren't always easy. In fact, they rarely are and the path for Charlotte and Henry is a twisty, rough road. I was just talking to someone about how it isn't fair when challenges and trials are sent your way because of the choices and actions of someone else and this is a classic case of that. A heartbreaking, classic case.

I would have loved to pick the inner workings of the character's brains more, but the story was pleasant and entertaining, and there is something satisfying about a relationship that takes a lot of hard work to get there.

Charlotte and Henry have a unique love, but many forces, including misunderstandings and unfortunate events, stand in their way. The separate paths they take definitely shape their individual characters and I really appreciated that.

This is a different type of Regency romance, but it was enjoyable in its own way.

The Inns of Devonshire (Timeless Romance Regency Collection {Review}

The Inns of Devonshire (Timeless Regency Collection) by Sally Britton, Annette Lyon, and Deborah M. Hathaway

Three novellas, three times the romance, and three times the love . . . in this brand new Timeless Regency Collection: The Inns of Devonshire

THE SEVENTH STAR INN by Sally Britton
After years of looking after one another, Susan Baxter and her mother view their neighbors in Totnes as family. When a new landlord inherits the leases on their homes and businesses alike, Susan dreads knowing her world could change at the whim of a stranger. But when she meets Collin Stonecroft and his inquisitive daughter, her feelings shift quickly from cautionary to hopeful. Collin has lived in the confines of London boarding houses all his life, and he’s determined to give his daughter more. They check into the Seventh Star Inn with plans to return to London as soon as possible, but both find Miss Baxter and her local history lessons far too enchanting to leave behind. When Susan learns of Collin’s proposed changes to her beloved neighborhood, will she be able to help him see that some things are perfect the way they are?

THE TRUTH ABOUT MR. BLACKMORE by Annette Lyon
Leigh’s life at the Old Grey Inn is drudgery broken by flights of fancy thanks in part to novels by Simon Blackmore. When Mattias McGrady comes to the inn for a fortnight, Leigh captures his attention. A relationship develops, and she dreads the end of his stay, which will mean a return to an unhappy life. An urgent letter to Mattias leads to him inviting Leigh to an event that stands to change both of their lives forever. If all goes well, Leigh will have a life of her choosing after all. But half-truths and lies have a way of complicating matters. When their plans go awry, Leigh loses her reputation and Mattias almost surely loses his career. Can either of them find happiness?

THE COACHMAN'S CHOICE by Deborah M. Hathaway
Ever-reliable Mary Thorne has helped her widowed mother run The Golden Mermaid Inn for years. She spends her days greeting guests, ensuring the inn runs smoothly—and dodging flirtatious remarks from passing coachmen. But she’s far too busy to pay any attention to such men, even the enticingly attractive Mr. Northcott. Known far and wide for his horsemanship, punctuality, and dallying reputation, Robert Northcott relishes his life as a coachman, especially his freedom to flirt with numerous women from inn to inn, all without the messy details of commitment. There’s just one woman who's immune to his charms: the lovely, single landlady of The Golden Mermaid. Robert is determined to win Mary over, just as heartily as she is determined to keep her distance from him. But his carefree life is threatened when his pursual of Mary becomes more than just a game...

AMAZON  ***  GOODREADS

My Review: 4 Stars

I love Regency romances and the great thing about this set is that the characters are all considered to be spinsters, as well as working class. Of course, the upper crust would be a blast, but there weren't all that many of them, so it's relatable for them to be "normal," strong, everyday women.

THE SEVENTH STAR INN tells the story of Susan and her mother, and their new landlord, Collin, and his adorable daughter. I loved the charming, rich history of this town and the wonderful relationships, and the way Susan fights so hard to keep things as they are. Seeing Totnes through her eyes was beautiful.

A hidden identity is a major factor in THE TRUTH ABOUT MR. BLACKMORE. The way the inn plays a role in Mattias's secret was endearing, but the tangled web soon ensnares him. Mattias had to overcome a lot in his life and I enjoyed watching him navigate things, especially an attraction to Leigh.

THE COACHMAN'S CHOICE was a wonderful way to end the collection. We all have choices to make in life--the good, the better, and the best--and I delighted in watching Robert try to have his cake and eat it too. Mary has new opportunities to pursue and has choices to make of her own, and it heartwarming to watch them figure their lives and desires out.

Can a marriage of convenience save Philly from the vengeful duke? Or will life with Arthur put her — and her heart — in more danger than ever?

AMAZON  ***  GOODREADS

My Review: 5 Stars

There's nothing I love more than a marriage of convenience trope and that's just the situation that Philly and Arthur find themselves in. Philly is an unconventional woman and doesn't realize her worth, nor her beauty, and when combined with her precocious personality and her adorable menagerie of dogs, she's definitely on my list of favorites. I loved the way Arthur and Philly interacted and the way he was such a protector from her uncle and a villainous duke.

The story line and descriptions were vivid, allowing me to play this book out like a beloved movie in my mind. There were moments of danger and mystery swirling around and they only added to the story, making it more engaging--I didn't want to put it down!

As always, the romantic chemistry was my favorite and Matthews delivered just the right touch. It was gentle and sweet, yet so endearing. This is a must-read for Regency lovers.

The Best-Laid Plans by Sarah M. Eden {Review}

The Best-Laid Plans by Sarah M. Eden

134 pages, ebook
First published January 1, 2021
Source: borrowed from the library

Newton Hughes has long dreamed of pursuing a career in law, an acceptable choice for a gentleman of status and wealth. His parents, however, disapprove of his ambition, urging him instead to take his rightful place as a gentleman of leisure—with a suitable wife of their choosing, of course.

Ellie Napper would like nothing more than for her parents to abandon their incessant efforts to marry her off to the greatest possible advantage. Her lack of matrimonial enthusiasm drives her family mad, but she refuses to feign frivolity in order to make herself more palatable to potential suitors.

When Ellie and Newton are introduced through their mutual acquaintance, Charlie Jonquil, they commiserate over their shared plight. In desperation, they hatch a plan: Ellie and Newton will feign an interest in each other—enough to convince their parents not to push them toward unwanted matches but not enough to cause whispers or expectations. Their plot quickly spirals out of control, but the greatest complication is the one they didn’t see coming: their plan never included falling in love.

My Review: 5 Stars

What a teaser! I loved the mash-up of the Lancasters and the Jonquils and when Newton and Ellie were thrown into the mix of an entertaining way to avoid marriage, I was hooked. Eden always writes delightfully charming characters and Artemis and her Huntresses opened up all kinds of possibilities for future stories.

Ellie is mistreated by those who should love her best and I was so happy when Artemis took Ellie under her wing. Newton is such a wonderfully kind gentleman and the plan they came up with was full of thrills and swoon, especially as this group became tight-knit. These characters are endearing.

You'd better believe I'm counting down the days to the match of a lifetime and it all sparked with this adorable novella!

Content: mild romance; mild mistreatment

Kindle Edition

Lady Charlotte Whitaker is devoted to her family, particularly her sister’s son, Freddie. Her late father, the Marquess of Lockhead, died without a male heir. But on his deathbed, her father requested that Freddie inherit the title. Consequently, Lottie’s family has petitioned the Crown to recreate the title with Freddie as the new heir. Lottie wants nothing more than to honor her late father’s wishes. But she unwittingly reveals a wrinkle to this plan.

Dr. Alexander Whitaker is dedicated to his work as a physician in Edinburgh, Scotland. He dislikes surprises—disruptions to his daily schedule, interferences with his ability to care for his patients, and events that might alter his future. He particularly abhors things that threaten to do all three. So when a solicitor calls with news that Alex might be heir to an English marquisate, Alex wants nothing to do with the claim. But the law is the law, and a man cannot revoke his lineage, can he?

Alex does not want to be the new marquess.

Lottie is determined to honor her late father’s wishes.

Their goals should be simple enough to accomplish, right?

But when two kindred souls crash into one another, the resulting conflagration may have consequences neither can anticipate. And Lottie and Alex soon face a difficult truth—sometimes, life makes us choose between two loves, and in order to have one, we must forsake the other.

My Review: 4 Stars

I love the Brotherhood of the Tartan and I love the mystery that ties these men together. In this installment, the reader is treated to Alex's story. He is a Scottish doctor who finds himself inheriting a title and all that goes with it in England, which forces him to make some difficult decisions--to accept it or not.

The story starts out with an absolutely hilarious scene. I wasn't quite sure how to take it at first, but then it was revealed and actually I laughed out loud. From there, the plot progresses in a manner that represents Alex very well--meticulous and cautious--yet it kept me turning the pages to discover the secrets held within.

I loved to love some of the characters and loved to hate others. Charlotte was delightful and I was so mad at her sister for her antics in regards to Charlotte's future. Alex is a serious gentleman in every way and the way his life tangled and clashed with Charlotte's after an accident had me bracing for the impact of their attraction, especially since it was forbidden.

Van writes in a way that smacks me right upside the heart and compels me to give her stories my full love and attention. I loved the twist this book took and can't wait for yet another addition to this series.

Content: mild romance (kissing); mild-moderate language (nothing intense, just more than a few); very mild violence (accident, talk of a shipwreck)

A Captain for Caroline Gray by Julie Wright {Review}

A Captain for Caroline Gray by Julie Wright

Paperback, 336 pages
Publication: March 2nd 2021 by Shadow Mountain
Source: I received a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given

Caroline Gray would rather be daring and intelligent than demure and insipid, which is why she is still unmatched after her third season in London. Her family’s threadbare finances leave Caroline with only one choice to secure her future: sail with the Fishing Fleet to India, where the son of a family friend is willing to consider an engagement to her.

Captain Thomas Scott loves the open sea as much as he despises the three-month, twice-yearly trip his ship makes as he ferries young English girls across the ocean. He can’t imagine what family would allow an innocent young woman to be matched up with the Englishmen of questionable reputation who work and live in India.

But when Miss Gray boards the HMS Persistence, all of Captain Scott’s plans are upended. Miss Gray’s fiery spirit can’t be contained, and he is shocked and secretly delighted at her boldness—and her beauty. But the rest of his passengers aren’t so kind.

Caroline finds herself an outcast among her peers, but Captain Scott becomes an unlikely ally. They share the same passions and interests, creating an undeniable attraction. But they both know any relationship between them is impossible. After all, Caroline has obligations to fulfill in India.

Caroline has until the end of the voyage to decide if she is going to marry a man she has never met or be brave enough to love a sea captain who just might break her heart.

My Review: 4.5 Stars

I adore Regency stories and this one had a few unique twists that made it stand out. Caroline is at the end of her options in England and a plan is hatched to send her to India to see if a match can be made there. I've always found these times in this country to be slightly mysterious and fascinating, and this story was no different, especially as most of the story took place on a ship in the middle of the sea.

Caroline is a very outspoken, opinionated young lady who has cultivated her interests in topics more than her interest in a match and that fire is exactly what captures Captain Scott's attention. I absolutely loved him and the way he would react to and engage with Caroline. The supporting cast of characters was equally charming.

The whole plot was fresh and fun. You'd think because it takes place in such close confines it would get a little stale, but that was definitely not the case. I was hooked from start to finish, but...the story felt like it just suddenly ended and I wanted a little bit more. An epilogue or just one more chapter would have made it perfection.

He thinks she is a rare beauty. She knows he is charming on paper. Both hope for romance, but when letters are no longer enough, Clara must face the truth and decide whether to let go of pride or protect her heart.

For the first time in her life, Clara Everton has done something truly improper. She has written to a gentleman she hardly knows, simply to avoid an unwanted marriage proposal and perhaps to prove to herself that her first London season was not such a disappointment after all. As one letter grows into many and her feelings for James Thayne deepen, Clara begins to wonder whether a letter is as innocent a thing as she once thought. Meeting Mr. Thayne in person shakes her hopes, and she must reconcile herself to the unexpected truth. Yet, as circumstances continue to bring them together, Clara can't help but question whether opening her heart to Mr. Thayne is riskier than protecting it.

My Review: 5 Stars

Sometimes a debut novel is a little rough, as it takes a few stories to find a groove, but that was definitely not the case with this charming book! Powell captures the spirit of the Regency time, or how I like to imagine it, with her lively characters, dreadful rakes, cases of mistaken identity, and clandestine romances. I was held captive by these pages and couldn't wait for all the pieces to fall into place.

Clara is slightly persnickety in her quest to find love and won't settle for just anyone, yet I found myself identifying with her sweet and caring personality. I love how she fell into friendships and found herself in interesting situations, which she handled with grace. Mr. Thayne is an appealing character, with his determination and awkwardness. The combination of the whole cast of characters was delightful.

There are many intricate threads holding this story together and each tangent was entertaining in their own rights. It was fun to tie things together as the plot progressed and while the events weren't necessarily action-packed, the gentle and steady nature was very engaging.

1811, HMS Deborah

A Regency romance on the high seas.

As a young girl, Georgana Woodall dreamed of beautiful dresses, fancy balls, and falling in love. However, when her mother dies, she cannot face a future under the guardianship of her abusive grandmother and instead chooses to join her father on his ship disguised as his cabin boy, “George.”

Lieutenant Dominic Peyton has no time in his life for love, not with his dedication to His Majesty’s Royal Navy claiming his full attention. Determined to prove himself to his new captain, he strives to be an exemplary officer and leader. When he sees the captain’s cabin boy being harassed by the crew, he immediately puts a stop to it and takes the “boy” under his wing. After discovering a number of clues, Dominic deduces that George is really a woman. Knowing that revealing the cabin boy’s secret would put her in serious danger from the rowdy crew, Dominic keeps silent and hides his growing affection for her.

Georgana is quickly losing her heart to Dominic’s compassion and care but is convinced nothing can come of her affection. She cannot continue to live her life on the sea, and having already missed too many seasons in London, her chances of being welcomed back into polite society and finding a suitable husband have slipped away.

Georgana’s Secret is about two hearts yearning to find a safe harbor, and possibly, a lasting love.

My Review: 5 Stars

Life isn't all ballgowns and happiness in this book, but that's not a bad thing at all. A Regency romance on the high seas during war was a very interesting way to find adventure and love. More than once, I found myself feeling very anxious over the events and I was completely invested in this tale.

Georgana is disguised as a boy on a ship that her father captain's for a few different reasons and when the new lieutenant, Dominic, takes her under his wing to help her learn the ways of Navy life, she's smitten. Between Georgana's stubborn strength and Dominic's caring determination, I was held hostage to this story.

Life on a Navy ship isn't easy at all and I felt that I was given a fairly accurate glimpse into that life. I loved the adventure, danger, and camaraderie, especially the relationship between Georgana and Dominic, but the power struggles and death were hard. I appreciated the balance of information and emotion, and felt that a very well-rounded story was delivered.

I loved the uniqueness of this book and Hawks has an excellent way of telling a believable and engaging story.

Content: mild romance; mild+ moments of danger, violence, death

She’s never been afraid of breaking the rules—until she risks breaking her heart

Constantly stifled by the rules of Society, spirited Rebecca Rowley enjoys finding ways to quietly—or not so quietly—rebel. But riding bareback and avoiding nosy neighbors are nothing compared to the thrilling secret she is keeping from her family.
When Rebecca’s quick thinking saves the life of a young girl, she unwittingly attracts the attention of the child’s dashing brother, Lieutenant Nicholas Avery. As that attention turns flirtatious, Rebecca is forced to tell him the truth: she is secretly engaged—to the one man her family would never approve of. Fortunately, Lieutenant Avery is a navy man with no wish to marry, or so they both assume as they enter into a friendship. Rebecca hopes to change her family’s mind about her betrothed, but the more she comes to know the handsome lieutenant, the more she wonders if she promised her hand too hastily.

After all her carefully laid plans are shattered during a family crisis, Rebecca must force her heart to decide. Should she stay true to the promise she made or fight for the future she’s only just begun to imagine?

My Review: 5 Stars

Rebecca is a spirited character and such a breath of fresh air, as she basks in the secrets she keeps from her mother and brother. Although she does conform to some societal expectations, she dances to her own tune, which leads to some very interesting and entertaining situations. Her new neighbors, Nicholas and his half-sister, Olivia, catch her attention and a deal is made. And wow, does this devious deal lead to some swoon!

These characters are utterly delightful and vivid. I loved the subtle flirtations and the banter, especially regarding the secrets. Barker does a great job of creating an entertaining plot with engaging characters. I adored Rebecca's relationship with her family, most particularly her mother, and loved watching her interact with Olivia. But the romantic exchanges stole the show.

On the Second Day of Christmas by Deborah M. Hathaway {Review}

On the Second Day of Christmas by Deborah M. Hathaway

Kindle Edition
Publication: November 21st 2020

Slipping on the ice is bad enough—being treated by the physician she rejected years ago is simply unbearable.

Belles of Christmas: Frost Fair
Sweet, Regency Christmas Romances
Five Christmas romances and the Frost Fair that started them all

Headstrong and independent, Miss Lucy Lincoln wishes to find a husband who shares her taste for adventure. Until then, she is determined to live her life without regrets. Well, except for the one she already has—humiliating poor Benjamin Kent after his unwanted marriage proposal years earlier. After an accident at the Frost Fair draws that same insecure gentleman to care for her injury, she finally asks for forgiveness. But Dr. Kent, now a respectable gentleman and physician, is unwilling to accept her apology.

Benjamin Kent wants nothing more than to live out his days in peace and seclusion away from London Society—and away from his memories of Lucy Lincoln. But when his conscience forces him to treat the woman, he cannot pass on the opportunity to finally let her know that she no longer has him under her spell.

Rather than being relieved with Benjamin’s indifference, Lucy struggles to accept the fact that little, shy Benjamin now shows irresistible confidence—and an unsettling apathy toward her. When sparks smolder between them, though, Benjamin must fight to keep his old feelings in the past, and Lucy must realize before it’s too late that either Benjamin has changed…or her own feelings have.

This is the fourth book in the clean and sweet Regency romance Belles of Christmas: Frost Fair series.
Although this second chance romance is a stand-alone novel, the books are best enjoyed when read in order.

My Review: 5 Stars

Have you ever done something that you regretted? Lucy can definitely relate. Years ago, she rejected Benjamin's proposal and now there are sparks igniting against her will, though it seems he no longer cares for her.

I loved watching Lucy recognize her impetuous behavior, especially as it relates so oppositely to Benjamin's solid, deliberate, and contemplative nature. As this opposites-attract couple interacts and continue to run in to each other, they clash and tumble into something that resembles tolerance and friendship...and maybe even more.

A second chance at love during the Frost Fair, along with an adamant and meddling old aunt, gave way to a marvelously entertaining story with heart. Hathaway does a phenomenal job of bringing the reader right into the pages and I was swept away, much like some of the characters literally were. This is definitely a Regency Christmas story not to miss!

My Review: 5 Stars

Christmastime in the Regency era gives me a major case of nostalgia for some reason and this collection won my heart as well.

In THE TWO BELLS OF CHRISTMAS, identical twins attend a house party where one has to impersonate the other. I adored Cassie's spunky personality and anticipated the unorthodox situations she'd find herself in. The bond between these sisters was so endearing and the blossoming romance was so sweet. Although a novella, Barker does a fantastic job in creating a complete story that was easy to get lost in.

A secret wedding is in the works in PROMISE ME AGAIN. I'm of the opinion that a person can chose whom they want to marry and it was so aggravating to watch Jacob's brother try to thwart his marriage to Miriam. My heart shattered when events turned in such a heartbreaking way throughout the course of this novella. Lyon is able to create a story that runs the gamut of emotions, while maintaining a core of tenderness.

I was surprised by the depth in A CHRISTMAS JOURNEY. Lucy decides if her father can't be home for Christmas, then she'll take the beloved holiday to him. Moore does a great job of portraying the feeling of home and takes the reader on a journey right along with the characters. This was the perfect way to wrap up this set of stories about everyday, normal people in the Regency era.

A Christmas Waltz by Josi S. Kilpack {Review}

A Christmas Waltz by Josi S. Kilpack

ebook, 130 pages

Publication: November 9th 2020 by Mirror Press

One dance, once a year.

This defines Marta and David’s friendship from the moment they first meet at the Yuletide Ball. Now, dancing the annual Christmas Waltz is a tradition between the pair in which they agree to tell each other the truth about their lives. Over the years that follow, their lives take different directions, wrong turns, and heartbreaking spirals, but they never miss their chance to reconnect and encourage one another to live their best lives, even if they can’t live them side by side.

My Review: 5 Stars

A Christmas Waltz wasn't set up in a way that I was expecting, yet that's what made it all the more sweet. Marta and David dance the Christmas waltz at the annual Yuletide Ball each year, and that single interaction is all they have. One dance, once a year, over the course of several years. Through that sole dance, a deep connection and friendship emerges, as these characters go through the ups and downs of life--apart.

David is an "older" gentleman, while Marta is just 16 when the story begins and the character growth, on both parts, is endearing. Although it might seem inappropriate for them to continue dancing throughout the years, that waltz had me, heart and soul and I eagerly looked forward to it. In a slightly melancholic manner, I was drawn in and tangled up in the unforeseen events. This story, from start to finish, was unanticipated, but was very well written.

If you're looking for a sweet Christmas Regency romance without all the fluff, consider this one, as its depth hit the spot.
