My Sister's Intended by Rachael Anderson {Blog Tour Review and Giveaway}

My Sister's Intended by Rachael Anderson

For as long as Prudence can remember, it has been understood that her sister will one day wed the eldest son of their nearest neighbor. Such an alliance will benefit both families and bring a great deal of joy to all parents involved.

Unfortunately, Prudence has never been able to feel as joyful. She believes her sister is mad to consider marrying a man she hardly knows, even if he will one day make her a countess. Titles and wealth shouldn't factor into matters of the heart, and as an aspiring romance novelist, Prudence cannot fathom how anyone could even think of settling for less than love. She certainly wouldn’t, and she doesn't want her sister to either.

Unable to stand by and do nothing, Prudence sets out to help the awkward couple discover the best in each other with the hope that they will eventually find love. What she neglected to foresee, however, was the possibility that she might fall in love with Lord Knave herself.

My Review: 5 Stars

What a fantastically charming and witty story! I couldn't put it down and could stop swooning--such a darling story with incredibly well-written and engaging characters. I was beyond thrilled to read at the back of the book that Sophia (the sister) and Abby (the best friend) will get their own stories and I cannot wait for those glorious dates of release.

Prudence is sweet in nature and really doesn't have a bad bone in her body, even if she is a tad bit rebellious. She is very spunky and has a wild imagination and easy personality, which captivates those around her and causes her mother to forbid her to participate in social events, since her older sister needs to marry first. Prudence isn't so sure about her sister Sophia's intended, Lord Knave, and in an effort to catch him in a compromising position, she instead finds herself in an arrangement with him. She's definitely a precocious darling. And Lord Knave (aka Brand)? He is irresistibly likable and I couldn't get enough of him. Just read that excerpt below, and you'll see what I mean.

I absolutely adored every single thing about this book! The clever banter had me smiling, the romance had my toes tingling, and the plot had me completely enchanted. This is one that will be read and re-read for sure!

Content: mild, swoony romance

Excerpt
When Prudence lifted her eyes to his again, they sparkled with a challenge. “I was going to save this question until later so as not to shock you from the get-go, but I really do need to know . . . What does it feel like to kiss a woman?”
A large lump formed in Brand’s throat, and his mouth went dry. What the deuce? She had promised not to ask questions that would make him uncomfortable, but already he wanted to flee like a frightened kitten. How could he possibly explain how it felt to kiss a woman?
Brand searched his mind for a way to avoid answering until he heard a snicker escape her lips. She was laughing at him. Him! Hildebrand Ethan Cannon, Viscount Knave—a man at least eight years her senior and a great deal higher in social standing.
Unbelievable.
“You are teasing me,” he said, hoping it was true. If she’d posed the question to make him squirm—and perhaps make him more inclined to answer her other questions—then she wouldn’t be expecting an answer.
She shook her head, still smiling. “I’m afraid not, my lord, although I did find the look of terror on your face vastly amusing.”
“I’m glad I could entertain you.”
“I hope you will be equally glad to instruct me on a few things as well. The first scene in my book will include a kiss, and I have no idea how to describe the experience. Do a woman’s lips feel warm or soft or even moist? Would your pulse quicken? Aside from touch, what other senses are engaged? How would it make you feel and what would you notice when you held a woman in your arms?”
If she thought he’d appeared terror-stricken before, there would be no word for how he looked now. Did she earnestly expect him to answer such questions? Surely even she knew how inappropriate it would be to discuss such things, her being an innocent.
“I cannot say,” he finally muttered.
Her brow puckered in confusion. “Have you never kissed a woman, my lord?”
Brand was sorely tempted to lie and say he had not, but he couldn’t bring himself to do so. Any man of six-and-twenty who had never experienced a kiss would be laughed out of his manhood. Women were expected to remain innocent until married. Men were not.
“Yes, I have kissed a woman,” he finally admitted, “but I have no intention of discussing any of the details with you.”
“Why not?” she asked, her large brown eyes blinking at him curiously. “Would you rather I invent the information?”
“Yes.”
She obviously didn’t appreciate his retort because she scowled. “Can you not tell me at least a little?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because a kiss could never be described with any sort of accuracy, at least not by me. It involves too many feelings and sensations and complexities of thought. If you wish to know what a kiss feels like, you’ll have to experience it for yourself.”
Too late, Brand realized his mistake. Her expression became contemplative, as though she was actually considering doing just that. Good gads, had he really just encouraged an innocent young woman to go hunting for a kiss? Who would she ask? A groom? Stablehand? The next peddler that came to town?
“I think you are right,” she said at last. “I really must experience a kiss for myself if I am to describe it with any sort of accuracy.” She blinked up at him with that innocent expression again. “Will you kiss me Lord Knave? No, how silly of me. You are to marry my sister, so that would never do.” She pursed her lips for a moment before musing, “Perhaps one of the footmen would be kind enough to show me how it’s done.”
Kind enough? Brand could think of a great many reasons a footman would comply with such a request, and kindness did not factor into any of them. Brand would kiss her himself before he allowed a footman near her.
He rubbed the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on. “Perhaps I can try to explain what it feels like after all.” Better that than having her chase after a footman.
“But you only just said you couldn’t do it justice,” she pointed out. “I realize I sound dreadfully forward, but I really must know, and experience is the best teacher, is it not?”
“No, it isn’t,” he lied. “And you are not going to kiss a footman.”
“Then who? Felix or Lionel, perhaps? I’m fairly certain I can convince one of them to do it, if given the opportunity. The question is how to go about it?”
It was plain to see by the firm set of her jaw that she would not rest until she had experienced a kiss of her own. She didn’t seem to care who did the deed, only that the man did a thorough job of it. A quick peck on the lips wouldn’t satisfy her curiosities.
“Perhaps I could send a note to Felix and ask him to call on me,” she continued to muse. “We could take a stroll through the maze in the gardens. There is a hidden alcove on the south side, which could be quite perfect. We would have to evade Ruth, obviously, but—”
“Devil take it,” Brand growled as he pulled her to him. Her quick intake of breath was the only sound she made before his mouth covered hers.

Lovers and Madmen (Brothers Maledetti Book 0) by Nichole Van {Review}

Lovers & Madmen (Brothers Maledetti 0) by Nichole Van

Florence, Italy. Summer, 1982.

Judith Campbell prides herself on her level head. She's a scientist with a ten-year plan, a well-managed bank account, and clear understanding of what she wants out of life. Currently, that means a summer of fun touring Europe with her friends. She intends to see some amazing scenery, flirt with a cute guy or two, and return home ready to settle down for good.

Falling madly in love with an Italian playboy is definitely not on her life goals to-do list. But then her eyes meet those of Cesare D'Angelo across a crowded piazza.

Cesare is everything Judith never knew she wanted. Handsome and charismatic, he challenges her assumptions and forces her rethink her logical approach to everything. Case in point--Judith finds herself falling for him, hard and fast. Definitely not her most carefully thought-out decision.

But Cesare keeps devastating secrets that will challenge Judith's very understanding of reality. And soon Judith finds herself facing the most difficult decision of all--Would you still chose to love someone even if your time together would be brief? Would you accept a relationship, knowing that only heartbreak and grief awaited you in the end?

Lovers and Madmen is a prequel novella for the Brothers Maledetti series. Lose yourself in Judith and Cesare's story and understand where it all began.

My Review: 5 Stars

A love story can be found in almost any story and I've often wondered more about this family, especially after reading Chiara's book. What about the parents? How did they fall in love?  How did they handle this family curse? If you've had similar questions, look no further because this little beauty will answer them and in a fabulously sweet and swoony way.

I love my life to be neat and orderly--I don't like surprises, but they come and I adapt. Judith has her life all mapped out and isn't sure she even believes in true love. Boy, did Cesare blindside her! An instant, deep, and binding connection brings these two together and won't let go, but Cesare has some major secrets that must be shared.

Nichole Van is so talented and really brought these characters, their emotions, and their reactions to life and in such a short amount of time. I loved watching these mysteries unfold, and although I kind of knew what they were, the journey was sweet and satisfying. There are some intense decisions that must be made and they really made me think--what would I do?

Perfectly Summer (Perfect #3) by Robin Daniels {Review}

Summer vacation is Levi London’s favorite time of the year. Each summer, he and his brothers are shipped off to Florida to stay with their grandparents. For ten weeks everything is perfect. He has freedom, fun, and Summer West—the cute and spunky girl across the street—for whom he’s planned to confess his giant crush.

Right before the London boys are scheduled to leave, a scandalous family situation causes their mom to accompany them on vacation. Not only does Levi’s fun quotient promise to take a nose dive, but all the drama has him feeling less than his normal happy self.

Summer decides that Levi needs a distraction, in the form of a prank war. But he gets more than he bargains for when his older brother Lucas is both better at pranking and determined to date Summer too. Levi is a peacekeeper, but he isn’t sure he can mediate his family’s struggles or strike the right balance between mischief and romance. Especially when Lucas keeps reminding him that all is fair in love and war.

*** This book may contain negative triggers for people with a family history of infidelity.***

Content Description: This is a stand-alone YA contemporary romance with companion novels set at the same high school. It contains minor language, innuendo, crude humor, and kissing. This book has no sex, written or implied, between any of the teenage characters and has no explicit language. However, the family conflict revolves around adultery between the parents. While it is not highly descriptive, sex is discussed multiple times with regard to adult relationships. Recommended for ages 14 and up.

My Review: 4 Stars

I'm a mom and I cannot imagine having three teenage boys who are very close in age, very competitive, and very aggressive, in a sibling type of way. Kudos to their mom for dealing with this handful so well!

Lucas, Levi, and Logan have been going to Florida to spend their summers with their maternal grandparents for years now and have formed a very tight friendship with neighbors, Hunter and Summer. I love the relationship that this group shares because they all manage to navigate the tricky balance of entertainment, love, dishing out the hard times, and watching each others backs. But the competition for Summer's attention is fierce.

The story is told from Levi's point of view and it gives me hope that there really are decent guys out there for my daughters someday. Oh, wait! This story is fiction, haha. I do believe there are good guys in the world and loved the calming, sweet, loyal peacemaking and gentleman that he is.

Read the content description, because it really does fit the story well. While the angst runs high at times because of the drama, the playfulness and sass that Summer brings to the story, especially through the prank wars, really helps to ease the tension. This is a fun, teen story with very real and believable characters. The book flows really well and is easy to visualize. I love Florida and felt like my inner teenage self just spent a summer there with these characters.

Content: mild+ language; mild+ romance (kissing, but some talk of intimate relationships between adults with no details given); some crudeness and innuendo

The Combustible Engagement (A Cobble Creek Romance) by Maria Hoagland {Review}

The Combustible Engagement by Maria Hoagland
(A Cobble Creek Romance)
Kindle Edition
Published March 18th 2018 by Gelato Publishing LLC
Source: I received a copy, which did not affect my thoughts and opinions

To say Tess Graham has a complicated relationship with her hometown is putting it mildly. With family ties and a successful real estate business she’s built from the ground up, Tess doesn’t want to leave. Not really. She would, however, like someone to see her for who she really is rather than the overshadowed twin in one of the town’s most prominent families. If only she could make a name for herself and find her place in Cobble Creek.

When handsome wildland firefighter, Monroe Scott, comes into town and wants to buy Tess’s grandfather’s barn for his reclaimed wood business, Tess feels the tug of nostalgia she didn’t expect. How can she allow Monroe to dismantle her childhood memories board by board? But as the listing agent, how can she prevent it?

To get what they each want, Tess and Monroe enter into a very temporary, very pretend engagement. As sparks fly and tempers flare, this fake engagement ignites into something both parties fight to contain.

My Review: 5 Stars

I remember reading about Tess as a very secondary character in a previous Cobble Creek romance and thought she seemed kind of high maintenance. I also wasn't sure I liked her because she was dating Frankie's soul mate--hah! What really struck me with this story is that once again, I learned that you can't judge people, especially when you don't even know them.

The first encounter with Tess and Monroe was classic! Sparks flew immediately and not necessarily in a good way. As the story went on, I found myself really, really liking both Tess and Monroe, especially when they let their guards down. One of my favorite ideas in a story is a fake engagement and when the chemistry is high, it's really great and swoony.

I can't imagine having a dangerous job like Monroe has, but I thought that was a perfect employment for the book because it created a double meaning. The sparks were hot around Cobble Creek, but also in town because of this combustible energy surrounding this couple.

I loved getting a deeper glimpse into this town and its residents and honestly can't wait for more!

Comes the Winter by Samantha St. Claire {Book Spotlight and Giveaway}

Comes the Winter by Samantha St. Claire

Avalanches, isolation and snow blindness were stark realities for those daring to remain in Idaho’s Sawtooth Range through the harsh winter months. For city dweller, Lena Sommer, the warnings seemed exaggerated.
In the fall of 1886, Lena leaves behind a life fraught with disappointments and loss only to arrive in Sawtooth City and find the man she’d pledged to marry has been killed. To return east is unthinkable; to stay is ill-advised, but she resolves to remain and manage the man’s lodging house despite the warnings. More than her stubborn nature influences her decision. From her first glimpse of this mountain valley, she falls captive to its wild beauty. Feeling she has at last found a hearth to call her own, she eagerly puts down roots. Sharing her love of literature with her lodgers before a warming fire, she builds a family of lonesome souls, where dreams awaken.
However, one man stands apart, disturbing her peace with ominous warnings to leave before winter comes. Evan Hartmann knows from personal loss that winter snows bring to these mountains both unimaginable beauty and death. He is also a man conflicted, because as much as he’d like for Lena to leave the mountains, his heart longs for her to stay.

Excerpt:

She recalled the small photo Mr. Nash had sent her, so little to explain the man who'd penned the letters. How strange, apprehending the essence of the man without ever having really known him. She wouldn't even be haunted by his ghost because nothing bound them in this world aside from an agreement to marry. This was a grief of sorts, she supposed, not for herself, but for a future that might have been. Perhaps their relationship might have become more than one of business. The unlikely event that love might grow from such a relationship had not even tempted her. She was a realist, honestly born to it by two very pragmatic parents.

A sudden rise in men's voices from the room below was followed by a whispered hush, as though someone had remembered the women were asleep in the room above them. That act of consideration she found endearing. Strangers can be kind. Somehow the kindness of these strangers touched her as the news of Mr. Nash's passing had not. A single tear rolled from her eye to drop upon the pile of papers atop the desk. She brought her hand to her cheek and wiped it away. No more need fall. One was enough.

For a long while she sat in the oversized chair, his chair, with her feet tucked up beneath her. From here she had a view of the shadowy form of the mountains. The voice of her father whispered in her memory. Beware the dangers of making decisions after the sun sets. Best to tuck your worries under your pillow and sleep on them till morning. Sometimes in the night the worries will be ironed out by your sleeping head. So, she resolved not to decide what to do tonight. That decision would wait until the clear light of day.

But sleep refused to come. When all sounds in the room below had ceased, she wrapped a quilt around her shoulders, slid her feet into her slippers and tiptoed down the stairs. Opening the front door, a cacophony of night music met her. Gently closing the door behind her, she padded to the west end of the porch, settling herself in a generous chair with a view of the western sky where the ragged edge of the mountains made a darker shade of night. Stars danced above the distant peaks, and the moon cast a pale light upon the mountain’s craggy face.

A calm that should not have been her companion after a day of upheaval took a seat beside her. She had no idea when her weary body succumbed to its need for rest and her eyes closed in sleep.

Author Samantha St. Claire

Samantha St. Claire was born in 2016, the alter-ego and pen name of an author of historical fiction born a few decades earlier. She may have found her niche in western historical fiction, served up sweet. Never faint of heart, her signature female protagonists face the hazards of the frontier with courage, wit, and a healthy pinch of humor.

The road from college graduation led due west where teaching in a small Arizona town fulfilled childhood fantasies on multiple levels. Hiking and backpacking the canyons and desert fed her imagination with the landscapes she would use later in life as an author. A few years passed before a change in jobs took her to California where her love of western history was further fed and her first novel of Russia's Fort Ross Colony came to life. But Idaho sparked her interest in the history of the magnificent central mountain ranges and Samantha St.Claire began her first series, The Sawtooth Range.

Prince of Granola by L.A. Sartor {Blog Tour Spotlight and Giveaway}

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Prince of Granola
(Plantation of White Treasure #1)

by L.A. Sartor
Contemporary Romance
ebook, 229 pages
March 25th 2018

Cacao – long a symbol of wealth, love, and power – now the center of a powerful rivalry.

The fabled Costa Rican Plantation of White Treasure, source of the rarest form of the cacao bean, is up for sale. Though two fierce competitors have been invited to bid on it, only one can win.

For Drew Hopkins, purchasing the plantation is the perfect solution to escape a life she never wanted.

For Robert Prince, it’s the perfect route to revenge.

Drew, the founder’s daughter and now CEO of HH Chocolate, heads a company whose sales are waning. Robert, CEO of Prince Organics, a man driven by excellence, despises everything and everyone labeled Hopkins.

But it wasn’t always that way.

Will their forced proximity at the lush and exotic plantation rekindle old flames or will it fan the fires of antagonism?

Excerpt:

“Failure isn’t an option.”
Robert Prince stood at the head of the conference table,
leaning forward, arms stiff, palms resting on the wooden
surface.
“And good isn’t what Prince is all about. Excellence, top of
the game, the best on the market is what I want for our premium
chocolate line.” Good might be enough for HH Chocolate or any
other rival company, but he owed his father’s memory far more
than “good.”
“I think I have a lead on getting us there. Until then, pull the
sample products and stop the hype.” Robert met the gaze of each
of his marketing department’s team members. As expected, he
saw approval in each of their gazes, until he got to Melissa.
“Pulling the product … that’s going to cost us both market share
and money.”
Knowing exactly where she was going to take this conversation,
Robert glanced out the windows of the conference room in an
effort to control his frustration. The bicycle riders using the
Boulder Creek Path, obviously enjoying the soft June sunshine
in Colorado, did little to soothe him.
He focused on her once again. “I’m not being frivolous, Melissa.”
Then he added a harder edge to his voice. “You know as well as
I do that launching a product that isn’t at the top of our game
will cost us more. I’m not losing the trust of our customers on
any product, ever again.”
Melissa narrowed her eyes, folded her arms over her very ample
chest and leaned back in her chair. Her shrewd gaze never left
his face.
“I think you’re making a mistake. There is nothing wrong with
the chocolate. We’re in a crowded market—it’ll take some time
to build a following. This isn’t a problem like last year’s issue.”
The issue Melissa so coyly referred to was the launch of their
new soy milk flavor that had garnered scathing reviews. A first
for Prince Organics. And the last. He’d admitted publicly that
the fault was his, and it was. He’d been too busy and allowed
the sourcing of the flavoring to be less than consistent.
He’d delegated.
Melissa Fontaine, his director of marketing, had objected to the
coconut-soy launch, and she’d been right.
This time she was wrong.

About the Author

I started writing as a child, really. A few things happened on the way to becoming a published author … a junior high school teacher who told me I couldn’t write because I didn’t want to study … urk … grammar. I went to college, moved a few times, came home and found the love of my life (that is another novel worthy story, but for later), and got married.

We were super busy with our respective careers, mine a custom jewelry business with my mom, who was also teaching metalsmithing at the time, and my husband a crazy law career. We had two fur babies, Fudge (and briefly her brother Smudge, but sadly he didn’t live very long) and Two. Our cats would sleep with us and when they’d stretch out to their full length, we’d end up sleeping on the edge of the mattress.

I have always been a voracious reader and one night after throwing a particularly bad book at the wall (even putting a small ding in said wall), I realized that I could do better. I told my husband, and he said go for it. I called Mom and she revealed the junior high teacher story and she told I’d been writing all the time up to that point.

That blew me away. I didn’t remember any of it. But I started writing again, nearly the next day, pen and paper, learning, making mistakes, winning contests, nearly getting an agent, becoming disenchanted with the publishing industry and moving away from novel writing to screenwriting, getting a contract for a script and doing really well in screenwriting contests.

But none of that was making me much money. After numerous scary robbery drills I wanted to move away from my bank job (yes, this is many years later and a lot of stuff in between) and write full time for the green stuff.

My husband told me repeatedly that independent publishing was becoming a valid way to publish a novel and people were making big dollars. I didn’t believe him even after he showed me several Wall Street Journal articles. I thought indie meant vanity press.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I started pursuing this direction seriously, retired from the bank and hit the keyboard, learned a litany of new things and published my first novel. My second book became a bestseller, and while I’m not rolling in dough, I’m absolutely on the right course in my life.

So if you have a dream, pursue it as hard as you can. Life can get in the way, but never give up.
