GUEST POST

FILM FUN
January, 2018
As I was sitting on the set, freezing in the unheated vacant old
Cupcake café that we were shooting in. Ironically, the owner was in
financial straits, which is the crux of the conflict for Maddie Strong….
she’s about to lose her business if she doesn’t get funding and expand
—we heard that Hallmark was going to change the title from
HEART’S DESIRE to THE SWEETEST HEART.
I could already hear the grumbling from Harlequin and my
mind flashed back to an executive meeting I had in Los Angeles in
January of 1984.
I had been flown to Los Angeles, my first trip there, by 20th
Century Fox to have photographs taken of me with the cast for publicity
purposes. It was Michael Douglas’s idea to promote the two Joan Wilders
…one of the movie, Kathleen Turner and me, Catherine Lanigan, the
Joan Wilder of the book. It had been chilly, but not cold. However, it was
the year of the SWINE FLU. (Not dissimilar from this year). I was
supposed to have an “entourage” who would take me around, keep me
out of trouble, make sure I had food. Well, they were all sick. So, some
guy, whom I don’t remember his name and I’m good at that, actually,
had to take me around. He wasn’t happy. It was such a “flunkie’s”
kind of job.
They didn’t know what to do with me. There was no one to
entertain me. So, one day, Michael Douglas had to “babysit” me.
The next day, because there was no one, I roamed around sets.
Got into trouble. Wandered onto “Rhinestone Cowboy.” Met
Sylvester Stallone.  Saw lots of crew people who all waved and
hollered to me. I shouted back. Hey, I was young.
So, they hauled me to the business offices. Gave me coffee.
And they carried on their meetings, obviously thinking I was just some
dumb romance writer. I learned a lot. A whole lot. That’s when I heard
that the studio wanted to change the title of ROMANCING THE STONE
to something else.
I had just been in Michael’s office and he’d just approved the
publicity photos and posters. He’d okay’d many things. The publisher
had books rolling off the presses. The book wasn’t complete, but the
cover was approved by Michael and the studio. To change the title now
would be disastrous.
There was an agent lady from New York who had put together
the publishing deal. She looked at me. I didn’t know much, but she must
have seen my bugged eyed, panic stricken face. I simply shook my head.
Kept my mouth shut. But I relayed panic.
Mildred Collins has been dead these many years, but thanks to her
quick thinking and persuasion in that moment with 20 Century Fox
executives, she saved the title of the film and the book. I watched it happen.
ONE person can make history in their own way. Mildred did it that day.
Michael’s movie retained its title.
Now, I ride around and see restaurants, boutiques, blog site and
more using the name Romancing the Spices, etc. All because Mildred did
her job. And spoke up.
God bless you, Mildred. You were the best! I’ll never forget you.

  1. I do like the cover it looks peaceful and relaxing. I did a search on your site using the search box upper right hand side, but it only brings up all of the old expired giveaways. I had typed in "giveaway".
