Stacking the Shelves #9

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews. It's a place to share the books bought, borrowed, and received during the past week.

I was pretty good this week and controlled myself. Since the past few weeks have been full of books and I'm feeling swamped, I only got two books from the library. I've been on hold for both of them for awhile and they finally came in. Hopefully, I can get them read soon.

Borrowed:
Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay
Sam is, to say the least, bookish. An English major of the highest order, her diet has always been Austen, Dickens, and Shakespeare. The problem is, both her prose and conversation tend to be more Elizabeth Bennet than Samantha Moore.

But life for the twenty-three-year-old orphan is about to get stranger than fiction. An anonymous, Dickensian benefactor (calling himself Mr. Knightley) offers to put Sam through Northwestern University’s prestigious Medill School of Journalism. There is only one catch: Sam must write frequent letters to the mysterious donor, detailing her progress.

As Sam’s dark memory mingles with that of eligible novelist Alex Powell, her letters to Mr. Knightley become increasingly confessional. While Alex draws Sam into a world of warmth and literature that feels like it’s straight out of a book, old secrets are drawn to light. And as Sam learns to love and trust Alex and herself, she learns once again how quickly trust can be broken.

Reminding us all that our own true character is not meant to be hidden, Reay’s debut novel follows one young woman’s journey as she sheds her protective persona and embraces the person she was meant to become.

Hearth Fires by Dorothy Keddington
Mackenzie Graham's ideal assignment - writing an article on storybook homes - takes a dangerous turn when she photographs a clandestine meeting between a prominent judge, a black-market kingpin, and a crooked cop. Rescued from harm's way by a rugged cowboy-attorney, Mackenzie finds her career and life forever changed.

Flying bullets and wild bulls team up with romance and suspense in the classic Keddington tradition. This exciting new novel will warm you on the coldest of nights.

Adult Romance

A sweet old-fashioned girl

isn’t what Grant Carrington is looking for. A man who lives for speed and danger, he’s only slowed down because he’s been forced to by an injury. Carrie Harlow isn’t his type, but he needs her in order to heal. She knows she’s playing with fire, but she feels she can help him and she goes for it—even though she knows she’s endangering her own heart as she fixes his.

Recipe for Carrie's Chicken Picatta included.

Purchase from Amazon.

My Review: I really appreciate reading a cute, romance series that has been clean up. This is the story of the Carrington brother, Grant. He's a race car driver who suffered a bad injury and has returned to his hometown, although he's still estranged from his family. Carrie is several years younger and has returned home after completing school to become a physical therapist. She's trying to start up a practice and in a moment of desperation, informs Grant that he's her first patient.

Carrie is a very naive and inexperienced woman and feels that Grant is a danger to be around, just like a Big Bad Wolf (I loved that part!). She's also pretty stubborn and quick to assume. Yet, she sure is willing to give her heart away faster than she wanted to.

Grant ticked me off. He's very good looking and has all the conceit to go with it. He was pretty selfish, not seeming to care too much about anything but women, winning, and racing. I think deep down, he felt guilty about that kind of a lifestyle, but he didn't make much of an effort to change things. Of course, sometimes later, people grow up and change.

I wish Carrie would have been stronger at resisting Grant's charms. He would insist she jump and she'd ask how high. I can understand an intense attraction, but she seemed to sacrifice and give a lot more to the relationship than Grant did. There were, however, parts that had me smiling and laughing--it is a fun read!

Content: very mild language (maybe 2); no violence; a lot of innuendo and talk of wild behavior, but it's mentioned in passing and not detailed, kissing. I would consider it clean for an adult reader.

A Little About the Destiny Bay Romances: Sweet Editions
From Author Helen Conrad

"The Destiny Bay Romances take place in the sort of beach town I've always loved--and now I live in one! But writing about beach towns came first and this series is centered on the rich, influential Carrington family living along the California Coast, and in Hawaii. These are good-looking, fast-driving, hard-hitting men and women whose impulses lead them into trouble every time--and inevitably to fall in love.

The original series includes language and love scenes that aren't, for the most part, especially harsh and explicit--but some of my readers from my years writing sweets for Harlequin as Raye Morgan have asked if we couldn't have sweet and clean versions--and I thought--what a good idea!

These are basically the same stories...but with the conflicts softened a bit, the language cleaned up, and no explicit love scenes. There are still a few adult situations, but they're muted. Consider these the PG versions.

I hope you enjoy them!"

What is Hidden by Lauren Skidmore Review/Tour

What is Hidden blog tourMy Source: I received a copy for review in exchange for an honest opinion.

Description: In a land of masquerades and mystery, Evie is a mask maker in Venesia, where masks represent rank and identity. When a cryptic bandit strips away Evie’s mask and destroys her home, she goes into hiding at the palace to find both a new identity—and revenge. Fantasy lovers will be caught up by the mystique, romance, and magic of "What Is Hidden."

My Review: I love the cover! I'm not usually a fan of faces on covers, however, this one perfectly fits the story and it's just beautiful!

It takes me a few chapters to be drawn into a story in most books. This one was an exception! I was immediately drawn into the story and it was hard to put down. I love fairytale re-tellings and this one was a fantastic, creative twist on an old classic, Cinderella. There's even a mysterious villain!

I've always wondered why Cinderella was so sweet and let everyone boss her around and walk all over her. In this story, Evie is in a social situation that doesn't allow for her to speak out. I loved how she had enough restraint to hold her tongue in a lot of situations and not give in to the natural instinct to fight/talk back. Evie is brave in her own right. I really enjoyed her character a lot and felt a lot of depth to her.

Her good friend, Aiden, has secrets that he keeps from even her. I kept thinking about how we all wear masks in life and something they come off and sometimes they change. I loved the twists and turns that happened so unexpectedly. This is a terrific book and the author is definitely one to watch!

Content: I would consider it clean!

Airel by Aaron Patterson & Chris White {Spotlight}

Airel Airel Airel: The Awakening is a young adult paranormal romance about the angel Kreios who falls so deeply in love with a woman that he chooses to fall from heaven to be with her. She gives birth to a daughter in Arabia, 1250BC. The girl is pursued ferociously, relentlessly by an enemy in the deepest darkness.   In present day, Boise, Idaho is just a girl: Airel. She's just your average high school student...who turns out to be anything but average. It's because of who she is, because of her ancestry, because of her lineage. Past and present collide as what has been twisted comes dangerously unraveled.

Excerpt from Airel: The Awakening by Aaron Patterson & Chris White
“CLASS, THIS IS MICHAEL Alexander. Michael, welcome to Borah High. Please take your seat.” Mr. Brashear turned back to the board while Michael began moving toward the only empty seat, just one over from mine. I wanted to shake my fist at the sky and shout, “Why, God, why,” but I couldn’t do that in the middle of History 301.

As he moved through the motionless room, I felt the difference his presence made.

I didn’t want to, but I was staring, too numb to do anything about it. He smiled as he looked around. His wheat- colored hair was spiked up softly, wildly, in the most out-of-control, amazing way. I felt my heart speed up as his bright blue eyes fell on me.

There he was. Mr. Napkins. I was Miss Coffee Spill, and I so wanted to be Mrs. Napkins.

I felt heat rising to the surface of my face. I’d never felt anything like this. Airel, what is wrong with you? This is so not like you. Michael moved with smooth grace. I was gawking, staring like some love-struck calf. I hoped he wouldn’t notice me. This was so stupid. Why was I acting like this?

But I could hear the universe calling my number, and I was stunned to discover that I had really been waiting in line all this time, staring wide-eyed, ticket in hand. But I don’t want this. I held my breath without realizing it. The draw I felt toward him was overpowering.

He sat in his seat and looked straight ahead, and I shook my head ungracefully. Just as fast as the room had stopped, it launched itself into hyper speed, and then I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Kim, wearing a big, dumb grin on her face. Her eyes sparkled as she said, “Wow, girl. You’re as red as a lobster.”

“What?” I said. It came out as a raspy, forced whisper, but it was all I could manage. Kim was stifling a laugh. I slunk down behind my history book. “Shut up, Kim.” But she just smiled and batted her eyes. I really didn’t like her right now. Maybe I could find a new best friend.

***

THE CLASS BELL RANG. I jumped up and rushed out the door, desperate for the bathroom. I didn’t feel well. I turned on the water and splashed its cold wetness over my warm cheeks, trying to cool myself down and shake my mind from the maddening fog that had overtaken me. It wasn’t like me to freak out about a boy. I was the last girl in the world to go gaga over a good-looking guy. But it was more than that. So what if he was good-looking—there were lots of hot guys around. It was something else, and I was starting to think it was really a spell.

I looked in the mirror. “Aw, man.” My face looked like I’d just had my first kiss and then sat under a heat lamp for a few hours.

Kim came in and stood with her foot jammed at the bottom of the door—so she could grill me in private, no doubt. “So,” she said, “you see the new guy?”

I shook my head and rubbed the back of my neck. “Whatever. I was hot. That classroom … it’s always so muggy, and I had a headache.”

“Oh, is it? I hadn’t noticed.”

I ignored her, pulled my hair into a ponytail, and splashed more cold water on the back of my neck. I was relieved to see my face returning to its normal slightly fair hue.

Kim just grunted and smirked and looked down at her nails, inspecting them, looking up at me in little snatches of concern. “Well, I think he’s ugly. Besides, what kind of name is ‘Michael Alexander?’ It’s like he has two first names. I mean, what is he, America’s Next Teen Pop Superstar?” Her face was calm. Much too calm.

She’s totally mocking me. I couldn’t help smiling. His face filled my mind for a split second. I could feel my blood warming, rising to my face again. I thought of all the dumb 80s song lyrics that my parents continually tortured me with. “Hey,” I said, trying to go on offense a little, “you and I both know he’s gorgeous, so stop lying. I don’t know what came over me. The room was actually spinning.

“Oh, the room was spinning? That’s news. Airel, are you crazy? Because, like, how did I miss that?”

“Kim, I don’t know. You know this isn’t like me at all. Something weird is going on. When he walked in, I completely lost it. It was weird. It’s like the clock stopped. Or jumped forward. Am I going crazy?”

“Yeah, and he looked at you like he knew you or something,” she said, coming closer to me, a little worry showing on her features.

I couldn’t make my mind stop. It was racing, replaying every second of our first meeting—the coffee, his hand, his smile. He looked at me like he knew me, looked me right in the eyes, saw me, and I could feel him searching me, looking for something, perhaps some kind of confirmation from me that I knew him too. My heart fluttered with the memory of that moment. I suddenly had this insane desire to cry and laugh at the same time.

Kim made a kissing sound, reaching out to me. “Loooove, Airel.”

I brushed her off, moving to an empty stall and locking myself in.

“You should see yourself. You so just went all googly eyed over him.”

I fell to my knees as crippling pain suddenly shot through my side. I couldn’t help whimpering. Then a sickening wave of warmth washed over me and I was instantly depressed. Hello, roller coaster. Wow, what’s your name? Could it be Michael Alexander? Ugh. Or maybe it’s just barf. “Ugh,” I said aloud, turning toward the toilet. “I think I’m going to be sick.”

“Loooovesick.” Kim was clearly enjoying my discomfort, but I had no time to defend myself. I bent and threw up into the toilet. Oh, dear God. This is fun. I was totally heaving in the high school bathroom.

Kim snapped out of taunting mode and rushed in to help me, going back into best-friend mode. I lost my dinner and yesterday’s lunch and started to wonder if maybe I should have had breakfast after all—was that why I was so sick all of a sudden? Skipping breakfast? There is a nasty flu going around this year…

Kim held my hair and rubbed my back. I didn’t know I was crying until I saw the tears splashing onto the floor and heard myself sobbing. I’m crying. Why am I crying? My stomach felt like a knife had been plunged into it and my whole body convulsed as I tried to stand up, my legs shaking like a newborn colt.

Kim helped me to the nurse’s station and soon after, I was on my way home, looking like death in the passenger seat. Trusty Kim was driving my trusty Honda. It was a good thing Mom was at work, and that Dad was out of town. I hoped I would be feeling better by the time Mom got home because she had a tendency to go overboard when I got sick. Parents.

Kim parked in the driveway and helped me up the stairs, and even though it was the middle of the day, I went to bed and fell asleep feeling cold and scared. Maybe I wasn’t lovesick and something was really wrong with me.

The Only Boy by Jordan Locke Review/Tour/Giveaway

only boy tou

The only boy The Only Boy by Jordan Locke Mary is stuck in Section One, living with three hundred women in a crumbling hospital. She wonders what life was like two centuries ago, before the Cleansing wiped out all the men. But the rules—the Matriarch's senseless rules—prevent her from exploring the vacant city to find out. Taylor's got a dangerous secret: he's a boy. His compound's been destroyed, and he's been relocated to Section One. Living under the Matriarch means giving up possessions, eating canned food and avoiding all physical contact. Baggy clothes hide his flat chest and skinny legs, but if anyone discovers what lies beneath, he'll be exiled. Maybe even executed. Mary's never seen a boy—the Matriarch cut the pictures of men from the textbooks—and she doesn't suspect Taylor's secret. If she knew, she might understand the need to stop the girls from teasing him. If she knew, she might realize why she breaks the rules, just to be near him. Then again, she might be frightened to death of him. Taylor should go. The Matriarch is watching his every move. But running means leaving Mary—and braving the land beyond the compound's boundaries.

My Review: I thought this was a unique storyline in the Dystopian genre. Taylor is new to the Sector and immediately forms a friendship and bond with Mary. There are no boys or men because disease has wiped them out and there is no desire to recreate them.

Life in this society isn't easy. Fear of disease is strong and it's the belief the everyone follows certain rules exactly, which include no touching. Mary doesn't feel that this rule, or any rule, is necessarily a good thing and sets out to try and change things. Mary is a risk taker and isn't too scared to take a stand and fight for what she believes in, even when it earns her time in the pit. She is constantly sneaking out and breaking rules--she's definitely rebellious, no matter what the cost.

Taylor--I have so many unanswered questions about him still. He wasn't as strong as I wanted him to be, although I don't know if I would be if I were in his situation. He was easily swayed and caved under pressure too many times. I was disappointed in a lot of his choices.

As with a lot of novels in this genre, it didn't end the way I expected (or wanted) it to, but it did take a lot of unexpected twists and turns that kept my attention.

Content: a few swear words; violence--killing, death, fighting, etc, but not extremely graphic; mild romance, but talk of polygamous-type relationships and some innuendo. I would consider it clean.

**I received a copy in exchange for an honest review**

Praise for The Only Boy
*“It’s not a dystopia that does a good job—it’s a great book that happens to be a dystopia.” Rachel Miller, Editor
*“This book is one of the best of its genre I have read, it kept me gripped to its satisfying end.” Janet Love, Amazon UK Reviewer
*“If you like a different take on the dystopian genre then I would highly recommend this unique and amazing book.” Tamara Bass, The Avid Book Collector

Excerpt: From Taylor’s Point of View

I place the biology textbook on a stainless-steel table, flip through the yellowing pages and stop on a cross-section of a woman. Her organs are carefully illustrated—heart, lungs, uterus. The next page is missing. Not ripped out. Cut, as if sliced with a surgeon’s scalpel.

The library at home has the complete book. I’ve seen the missing page—the anatomy of man. An extinct creature, as far as anyone knows.

A voice from behind says, “What are you reading?”

My shoulders tense when I turn to see Mary. None of the girls at home looked like her—dark eyes, perfectly straight nose and full, round lips. Her hair brushes my cheek as she leans over. She shouldn’t be so close. I ease the book shut and try to look calm.

“We studied biology last year,” she says. “Did your teacher go over it?”

In Section Seven, we self-studied, but she doesn’t need to know that. “No.” I carry the book to the shelf.

She follows. “You should read the part on genetics. It’s really interesting.”

I slip the book between a car manual and a medical dictionary. “I’ve read the whole thing.”

“But you said you hadn’t studied it yet.”

To avoid her gaze, I stare out the window at the abandoned skyscrapers and trash-covered barriers. “Don’t you have class or something?”

“We’re on lunch break.”

I growl. “Go eat.” My voice is too husky, too deep.

“I was tryin’ to be nice.” She turns to walk away.

I grab her wrist to stop her. Her skin is warm and smooth.

“What are you doing?” She wrenches her arm free. “You’re gonna end up in the pit.”

I step away, and she hurries toward the door, shoulders back and chin high. The loose-fitting hospital gown can’t hide the curve of her figure.

I want to touch her again.

Missing Lily by Annette K. Larsen Review/Blog Tour

Missing Lily Tour

missing lily Missing Lily “You don’t know who I am,” I whispered. He didn’t move—either away from me, or closer—and after an interminable moment, I stepped back and hurried out of the house. He didn’t follow me as I fled into the night. Lylin was not used to being alone—much less alone, hurt, and lost. So when she is separated from her guard and forced to abandon her horse, she counts herself lucky to stumble upon a manor house. Still frightened by those who chased her into the night, she keeps her identity a secret, calling herself Lily as she accepts the help of kind servants, and the compassion of Lord Fallon. When they fall into an easy friendship, she wonders if her secrecy was too hasty. However, as she gets to know the manor and its residents, Lylin discovers that she’s not the only one hiding secrets, and it may be a very good thing that her host doesn’t know her true identity as a member of the royal family.

My Review: I love a good princess story and this one was no exception. I loved the way this story started off--right in the middle of an adventure. This is a companion book to Just Ella. I don't think you need to read that one to understand this one, but it was fun to see some of the same characters show up in Missing Lily.

Lylin (aka Lily) is the youngest of seven sisters, all of whom are princesses. She is very sheltered and naive about life, but when she's placed in dangerous and scary situations, her natural instincts come through and she is able to handle them quite well. For example, when she finds herself injured and lost, she doesn't give her true name to her rescuers, not knowing who they are and how they'll treat her. She's very real and down to earth. She isn't afraid to be friendly with the servants and is very kind and loving to everyone around her. However, she isn't perfect. She feels real emotions all the way around--jealousy and anger, too. Even though she felt those less than perfect feelings, she still put others wishes and needs above her own. I loved how she had such a good relationship with her sisters, even those who are so different from each other. There was something about her that really endeared her to them.

Lord Fallon is a social recluse, yet he seems very desirable. All of the young ladies want his attention. He is very honorable and loyal, determined to honor his parents dying wish no matter the cost. He's the kind of guy that you really want on your side. I could almost see him rolling his eyes in some situations, yet he took a breath and carried on like a true gentleman.

This story was full of great characters, including one that was easy to hate and fear. I loved the palace life, the adventure, the dilemmas, and of course, the romance.

Content: no language; some violence/fighting--sword fights, stabbing, tense situations, but not graphic; kissing. Clean!

AnnetteAuthor Annette K. Larsen I was born in Utah, part of a crazy, fun family of nine. I grew up in Flagstaff, AZ and St. Louis, MO before striking out on my own college adventure in Virginia. I decided to try my hand at writing novels after I was married and living in Idaho. I write clean romance because it’s my favorite genre, but often difficult to find.
I have Charlotte Brontë to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it. I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

Immersed (Ripple Effect Romances #6) by Jennifer Griffith Review/Tour

Immersed tour
Immersed NewImmersed by Jennifer Griffith Lisette Pannebaker speaks five languages and has a brilliant business plan—personal language immersion. Clients can hire her to shadow them and speak all day in any language they need to learn for business or travel—whatever. But there’s a major hitch: she’s far too pretty. Clients with less than honorable intentions sign up just have Lisette at their side. Solution? A make-under. Way under. It works like a charm. None of her male clients show her the least bit of interest. Until… Erik. Erik Gunnarsson is charming, kind, and smart—everything she’s ever looked for. Even though he seems to have a secret and she swore she'd never date a client, Lisette is tempted to shed her disguise—even if it means jeopardizing her career.

My Review: This is the sixth and final book in the Ripple Effect Romance Series. I've really enjoyed the series--each book is about a character who crosses paths with someone in the previous book and they're all so different, yet all so darling.

In Immersed, Lisette is pretty fluent in many languages, since she grew up moving all over the world. After graduating from college, she wants to start a business helping clients learn a language by immersing them in it. Things don't go quite as planned because her good looks get in the way and most clients want more than to just learn a language. She decides to get a "make under" and turn herself into a more homely looking woman. She has a strict policy not to date her clients, but things change when she meets Erik. He's Icelandic and wants to become better at English to help his business along. He seems charmed by her, despite her looks, but it seems like he's hiding something to me.

Lisette isn't the type of woman to give in to her beauty and the demands men place on her because of it. She's very smart and independent, trying so hard to make her business work and to help her mom out with a shady contract. She fights her feelings so hard because she believes in being true to her word. My favorite part was the ski escapade in Aspen. I was laughing out loud over it!

Erik is a good-looking guy, yet he seems to look past the outward appearance and sees the inner beauty. I couldn't decide if he was a good guy or a bad guy because he didn't seem to be up front about everything. I loved how he deterred the burglars at McDonald's. He's either brave or stupid--maybe both. :)

The romance in this one was very gradual and hesitant, which fit the storyline well. I enjoyed watching the story unfold--it didn't feel forced or rushed.

Content: no language; some mild violence; mild romance. Clean!

 Excerpt:
“So…what?”

“Plain and simple: you’re too pretty for this job.”

Lisette rolled her eyes and picked up her brush again, going at the high spots on the wall with vigor. “You’ve been talking to my mom again. Did she finally rub off on you?” Great. Now no one believed in her. Not even Aunt Corky. Just a pretty face.

“No, not in that way. What I’m saying is that your business has merit. It can totally work. But just not with you, the way you are.”

Aunt Corky probably didn’t mean to make Lisette want to cry, but the tears welled in her eyes all the same. This dream had taken every waking hour of the last eighteen months. She’d poured her heart and soul into making it grow, not to mention all the money she’d buried in it—advertising, the office, everything. And her time. Day and night. How entrepreneurs lived past age forty mystified her. She barely had time to keep an eye on her elderly next door neighbors. And when a girl was too busy to serve other people, she was too busy.

Aunt Corky reached over and grabbed Lisette’s hand. “What I’m saying is you need a makeover.”

Lisette raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t raise that eyebrow at me, Z. I’m serious about this.” Aunt Corky folded her arms across her chest. “Not a makeover in the traditional sense. More like a make-under. You know, to make you look less…gorgeous.”

Here it went again, with the appearance factor. Didn’t all the studies say that people who were good-looking had a better chance at success than those who were below average?

“You’re not buying it, I can tell. But think with me. Dark circles under the eyes. A greasy wig. Lines at the mouth. And right about here,” she pointed at her nostril, “a big wart.”

“A wart!”

“Okay, maybe not a wart. That might be over the top. But something that will keep all the pawing maniacs at a distance.” Aunt Corky shrugged and leaned against a dry wall like she’d made her case and the prosecution rested. “Think about it, Z. I mean, you want Immerse to succeed, right? All the years of language skills and business acumen you’ve amassed, they’re going to waste.”

Lisette sighed. Even though she wouldn’t admit it aloud to Aunt Corky, unless something changed at Immerse, things could go south pretty fast. However, she wasn’t convinced it was reason enough to subjugate her dignity and go into daily disguise just to ward off pretenders.

Aunt Corky resumed painting. “Just think about it. Don’t decide now. But if you want to do it, I know somebody. Samantha. A genius with bad makeup. She could absolutely transform you. No one would even recognize you.”
This was crossing over from ridiculous into the absurd.

unnamedFDRE9K6NAuthor Jennifer Griffith Jennifer Griffith studied French, German, Japanese, and a wee bit of Spanish in her school days. Her grandmother was Norwegian, and Jennifer grew up with lots of Scandinavian traditions floating around, including fabulous cardamom laced cookies called Krumkaker, made on a fancy waffle iron. However, she’d never dream of trying to teach someone any of those languages. And she might botch the cookies. Instead, she writes novels in English, drives her five kids a million places, and laughs with her husband, who came up with the plot for Immersed because he’s just a cool muse like that.
