Faithful, fit & Fabulous by Connie E. Sokol $25 GC Blog Tour & Review

Faithful Fit Fabulous Tour
faithful fit fabulous
Title: Faithful, Fit & Fabulous Author: Connie E. Sokol Publisher: Cedar Fort Released: August 8, 2011
Filled with humor and I can relate life experiences, Faithful, Fit and Fabulous is the ideal 8-week life boost that will refresh any woman’s life. Gospel principles from scriptures, priceless gems from general conference addresses, and more, are shared along with ways to readily apply them in your busy daily life. Establish holy habits, feel fit and fabulous, and get organized. Just one goal a week for eight weeks simple and fun.

My Review: *****--5 Stars
I get overwhelmed at times. There's so much to do to try and improve myself and it's hard to accomplish it all. I loved the way that Connie Sokol laid out this plan with 8 basic steps. Her baby steps are perfect! She suggests that instead of trying to do something every single day for a week before adding a new step, to do it 2-3 times a week and as you accomplish that, bump it up until you are doing it every day.  I enjoyed the stories that she told and the way she personalized it. She's not someone who is up there lecturing on how to do it, but she's showing how she did it. She's done it, lived it, and it's worked for her, so why not for me? Or for anyone else looking to change? I thought this was the perfect book to read at the start of a new year, or really, any time. These basics are what it really all comes down to. I can't wait to start implementing them into my life.

Author Connie Sokol Connie Sokol is a mother of eight, a sought after local and national presenter, and a regular speaker at Education Week. She is a monthly TV contributor on KSL’s “Studio 5” and regular blogger for KSL’s “Motherhood Matters.” She is a former columnist for Deseret News and Utah Valley Magazine, and TV and radio host for Bonneville Communications. Mrs. Sokol is the author of several books including the award-nominated Caribbean Crossroads, Faithful, Fit & Fabulous, and Life is Too Short for One Hair Color Series, as well as the creator of talk CDs, podcasts and the “8-week Challenge.” Mrs. Sokol marinates in time spent with her family and eating decadent treats.

Review: Twelve Stones to Remember Him by Teresa Hirst

Twelve Stones to Remember Him Book Cover Image

Title: Twelve Stones to Remember Him

Subtitle: Building Memorials of Faith from Financial Crisis

Author: Teresa Hirst
Genre: LDS nonfiction
ISBN: 978-1-59992-898-2
Publication Date: January 2014
Pages: 171
Price: $17.99
Publisher: Walnut Springs Press
My Source: I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

About the Book:
The Lord commanded the children of Israel to mark their miraculous crossing of the Jordan River with a memorial of twelve stones. Modern prophets encourage us to remember God's hand, even as we come upon life s challenges. With the economic upheavals of the last several years, many Latter-day Saints have faced financial setbacks such as unemployment, reduced income, or the loss of a home.
This book contains true stories of individuals and families who've crossed financial crises with faith. From their journeys, you will learn to witness the power of God in your life. More fully trust in Him, even in uncertain times. Build spiritual memorials to cope with trials. Leave a legacy of love greater than money.

My Review: *****--5 Stars
There are many things in a person's life that can cause his or her faith to be tested. I loved the way the author brought in real-life experiences, along with scriptures and talks, to help the reader understand that it is possible to have hope and faith during these hard times. She mostly talked about financial difficulties and followed the journeys of a few different families.

There was one quote that I loved: "Stone by stone, we build spiritual memorials that mark our personal foundation of faith over time and experience." She had talked about physical markers earlier in the book. Certain big events in a person's life or in history might have a memorial so that we can remember it--the site of a deadly accident or Valley Forge, for example. However, it is just as important to mark major spiritual experiences as well, especially those that help us grow and strengthen us. It seems that most of the physical memorials mark difficult and sad times and it should be that way with our spiritual memorials.

I enjoyed the way this information was presented. It was told in a way that was easy to personalize to each reader. There are some great examples to follow and steps to take to improve the lives of each person who reads this book.

"I had trouble putting the book down. I enjoy the stories about the trials in their lives and the way they rise above them with a little assistance from Gott. Nice clean romances are a great to get away and relax. Thank you for the Great read." ~Teresa Thornock (Goodreads)

Excerpt "You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen," Samuel remarked. That was a bold statement from an Amish man. But Samuel's feelings were undeniable. Samuel knew that modesty was the Amish way. He'd been brought up on the plain life. Simple service to God. And while Samuel's feelings about himself were humble in nature, his feelings for Ruth were anything but. Ruth meanwhile was no fan of attention. She was naturally shy. Samuel had managed to coax her out of her shell though. Still, Ruth was hardly comfortable in the spotlight. It was a mystery to everyone else why Ruth was such a wallflower. She had so much going for her, she just didn't seem to realize it. "Now Samuel, there's no need to exaggerate," Ruth replied, modestly. "Who says I'm exaggerating?" Samuel continued. "I've waited my whole life to meet a woman like you. And now that I have, it would be a shame not to appreciate you." "Are you trying to make me blush?" Ruth wondered. "No. I'm just trying to make you feel as good as you make me feel," Samuel said. "I'd be careful with your expectations. If you let them get too high, you're bound to be let down," Ruth replied. "It's too late. My expectations are already through the roof," Samuel admitted. "But don't worry, I can't imagine getting let down by you." "It must be interesting looking at life through your eyes," Ruth remarked. "What can I say? Love brings a rose colored tint to everything," Samuel replied. "Don't you agree?" "Just because I'm not as vocal, doesn't mean I love you any less," Ruth said. "How much do you love me?" Samuel wondered. "So much that it scares me sometimes," Ruth admitted. Samuel was confused. "What's there to be scared about?" "Are you kidding? You know the road it's taken us to get here. So after all the bumps, to finally be with you, to finally turn my heart over, to let my feelings be exposed is both exciting and terrifying," Ruth explained. It was true. Ruth and Samuel had found the most roundabout way of getting together. They had been friends for the longest time. Part of a tight knit group of friends that had grown up together in Lancaster. So Ruth and Samuel didn't want to do anything to jeopardize their friendship. They'd seen two of their close friends date in the past. But when their relationship went south, the friendship was ruined as well. Ruth and Samuel didn't want the same thing to happen to them. So Ruth and Samuel dated other people. They did not have much luck finding love though. There were a lot of first dates, but very few second dates. After a while, Ruth and Samuel started to lose hope that they'd ever meet their match. That's when after a lot of hemming and hawing about risking their friendship, Ruth and Samuel finally gave in to the feelings they had for each other. Ruth and Samuel's first date was the best either one had ever experienced. They were a great match. With so much in common. And they made a wonderful couple. It was hard to believe they'd been so afraid to get together. In the end, their friendship only added to the relationship they were building. And ever since then, Ruth and Samuel had been nearly inseparable. Now almost a year in, Ruth and Samuel couldn't imagine being with anyone else. They made each other happier than they ever thought possible. But that didn't mean Ruth was without her worries. Samuel was always there with optimism abound though. "That's how I know we're meant for us each other. Because we know what else is out there. And none of it compares to being with you." Ruth smiled. "You're the sweetest man I've ever met."

Review: The Gathering: End's Beginning by Randy Lindsay

Gathering, End's Beginning blog tourPublication: 2014, 265 pages
My Rating: *****--5 Stars
Source: received a copy from the publisher in exchange for honest review

Blurb:
Here they were, on the brink of the next era of human history. Prophets had foretold of this time for thousands of years. But of all the things that John could say about their current endeavor and the events that would soon come to pass, nothing came to mind. . .
except fear.

John Williams knows conditions in the United States are getting worse, but when his oldest son, Robert, comes home early from his mission and John receives a special Church calling, suddenly everything comes into perspective—the Second Coming is closer than he ever thought possible.

John travels to the middle of nowhere to build Camp Valiant, a future gathering place for Latter-day Saints, leaving Robert to protect the family from the escalating violence and crime in their town. And as rumors swirl throughout the country that those sworn to protect the United States may, in fact, be the ones tearing it apart, Secretary of State Calvin McCord decides to uncover the truth, no matter the consequences.

Compelling characters and political intrigue allow The Gathering to paint a thrilling yet realistic view of the Second Coming’s beginning. As the threads of society begin to unravel around them, the Williams family must find a way to tie their faith together as they prepare for this most glorious event.

My Review:
Things immediately happen with a bang--Robert is sent home from his mission 6 months early without any known reason. He's told that he's served honorably and that's it. When he arrives home, he's surprised to see how much things have changed.

Another story is running parallel to this one: one about the government. The Secretary of State is trying to find the truth to what's really going on in the world affairs.

I really enjoyed the characters and the way they each handled their situations. Even the strong wanted to give up at times and didn't feel very Christlike to those who were tormenting them. Not one family appeared to be perfect--they had members struggling and the feelings shown were real. I was able to put myself in the story and that scared me just a little.

I know if we're prepared, we need not fear, yet this story opened my eyes and mind to events that I'd never really thought much about. The scary thing is, this story could really happen. The progression of the events was so realistic that I wouldn't be surprised to have any of them happen next week. I thought this story was told in a very believable way. I enjoyed the pacing as well. It was just right--not too sudden and not dragged out.

I'm assuming this is the beginning of a series (I hope) and what a great beginning it was!

Content: There is some violence, but nothing is graphic. Clean.

Moon Calf $50 Book Blast

Mooncalf coverMooncalf by Linda Zern Over Olympia and Leah's heads, Americans race the Russians to the moon; on their television sets young men fight and struggle in the mud of Viet Nam; and America holds its breath between heartbreaking tragedies. But on Miss Brinker's school bus, in the seat with the rip in the green plastic, Olympia and Leah fall in love, the way children do: immediately, completely, and without knowing or caring why they shouldn't. Olympia Crooms, with her happy hair, and Leah Breck, with her silly red dog, are two smart girls. Olympia's father works other men's orange groves in rural Central Florida and tells his daughter that school is the best way to reach for the stars. Leah's father moves his family from the Space Coast to the country where she and her brother can climb orange trees, imagine lions in the tall grass, and learn to feed baby cows milk from a bottle. At Evegan Elementary, two smart girls find each other and have to decide if they will learn the hardest lessons of all: the false traditions of their fathers.

Praise for Mooncalf "One of the most admirable things about Mooncalf is that it's difficult to find a single wasted word in the entire book. Granted the book is short; yet, it is very rare to find a book which treats with such delicacy the choosing of each word--each adjective, verb, and noun. Themes, motifs, and symbols are everywhere throughout Mooncalf, and most impressive of all none of it is discarded. Motifs and themes exist in big and small circles in Mooncalf, circling back in on themselves as well as intertwining themselves with the plot and the characters that inhabit it. And those motifs and themes, those messages and those symbols, don't go away once you've finished the book. They stick with you. It's hard to forget Mooncalf."" ~ The Thousander Club "I never expected to be moved to tears by a book meant for adolescents. Buy it, read it, share it, and let yourself be changed by it." ~Lacey Smith Excerpt Olympia’s voice was a whisper in Leah’s ear. “I don’t have those things, those cooties.” “I know. I don’t even care what those things are.” “Cootie bugs. Miss Rhodes is saying I have bugs crawling and living in my hair and at my house.” “Miss Rhodes didn’t mean you.” Leah felt icky. “She couldn’t mean you.” “It’s because I’m one of the poor kids, you know. She said it: sharecroppers.” Without looking, Olympia pulled her hand out of Leah’s and started trying to flatten the wrinkles out of the crushed paper doily on the valentine. Leah put her hand over Olympia’s, the valentine a ruined mess under their fingers. “But Miss Rhodes has hair just like yours.” “No,” Olympia said, shaking her head. “No, Miss Rhodes doesn’t want hair like mine, like she had when she was a little girl. She wants white folk’s hair. That’s what Granny Mac says. ‘Cuz some colored folks like her don’t know who they want to be any more.’” Leah looked at the neat part in her friend’s black braids, and loved the way Olympia’s barrettes danced when she dropped her head. She saw only the complicated, clever patterns in her friend’s clean black hair. Leah saw only Olympia.

Warriors MoonWarrior's Moon Medieval Historical Romance by Jaclyn M. Hawkes   Never in all the kingdom has there been a more brave and protective champion. Nor such a loyal and capable maiden. "This book has adventure, memorable characters, and tons of action. There is even romance! I absolutely loved it!!!" ~Laura (Goodreads)

Warriors Moon Tour
My Review: *****--5 Stars
I love stories about princesses, but stories about knights are pretty much just as good, if not better--at least, in my opinion. I enjoyed the way the story started off, with Chantaya (LOVE her name) being a little, tiny girl. When her family was in an accident, they were rescued by Peyton's family and Chantaya immediately clung to Peyton. From that time on, she went where Peyton and his brother went and learned what they learned.  I loved how they met Sir Mordecai and how kind and helpful he was. I loved watching Peyton grow into a man and loved how strong, valiant, and wonderful he was. How could a girl not fall completely in love with him? Chantaya is the kind of girl every girl dreams of being--absolutely beautiful, without realizing it, very nice, insanely brave, and a great cook. The ending took a turn that was a little surprising, but it was great. The romance that develops is so sweet and real, being tender, yet passionate. I just couldn't get enough--this one is definitely on my list of favorites.

Content: kissing, some fighting/violence, but not too graphic, a few very mild instances of language. Clean!

Prodigal

Published: January 2013, 340 pages

Blurb:

It was supposed to be Lexy Quinn’s year.
The hard-working wallflower has finally landed the coveted spot as Editor of her school’s newspaper. Then the rug is ripped out from under her when she finds out her mom is sick, and the family is moving half-way across the country to Preston Hills, Texas. Lexy can’t think of a worse place to be than at a school full of snobby rich kids where she’ll have to start all over to get people to notice her writing, or–who is she kidding?—notice her at all.
When the most swoon-worthy boy in town, who also happens to be the jock celebrity quarterback, gives her an exclusive interview, Lexy’s life takes an unexpected turn. Ash Preston is the perfect guy and, even better, he sees Lexy as she wants to be seen. But can she trust him?

Prodigal is a different kind of love story, where faith, romance, and God converge . . . and it just might change the way you look at your life.

Ekho $50 Book Blast

EKHO Cover newEKHO by Marie D. Jones Ten-year-old Elvis Jones is tired of being picked on, taunted, and teased by the bullies at his elementary school, so he does what any smart, technologically brilliant kid his age would do: he creates EKHO, the Evil Kid Hunting Organization, a sophisticated network of kid spies and secret agents that utilize a variety of cool gadgets to stay one step ahead of the enemy – the bullies. They hire kids, make them swear allegiance to the organization, and train them as Commandos, Privates, and Elite Spies. As kids rise through the ranks, the missions, posted on an encrypted EKHO website, require more smarts and skill, especially when the bullies form their own counterspy group called DEKE (Destroy EKHO Kids Everywhere). It’s all in good fun, until the kids of EKHO must put their pretend skills to use for far more serious, and dangerous, missions. As field agents come across evidence of more sinister forces, they now have to deal with the strange, weird, and the unknown as they look for the truth about the bizarre and creepy threats to their school, their families, and their own lives. They experience betrayal, intrigue, infiltration and counter-espionage as well as teachers and adults who act more mysterious with each passing day, which leaves Elvis and his EKHO team wondering: who can you trust when the person standing next to you might not be entirely human?

Shadowskin

Cursed with a deadly touch, Pomona never thought she would leave the royal gardens of Norarchland, where she uses her magic over plant life to make the gardens flourish. But when she discovers a magic mirror beneath the roots of an apple tree, she learns a horrifying truth: the life of the beautiful Princess Nevea is in danger, and Pomona is the only one who can save her. Pomona flees with the princess into the dark forest, where she is taken in by the mysterious Selene Magna and her huntress companion, Callisto. They claim that the Tenebrari-short, magical beings responsible for Pomona's curse-are trying to conquer all of the kingdoms of Archland. Even more, Pomona is destined to play an important role in their defeat. The cursed gardener must now embark on a journey far beyond her imagination to stop the Tenebrari, or else she and all those she cares about will be cursed forever.

Bethany Cassel lives in a land surrounded by forests and cornfields, and she was lucky enough to grow up in the same house all her life. Falling asleep to the sound of waterfalls and seldom-disturbed quiet provided the perfect environment for her to develop her passion for writing. Inspired by the beautiful landscape around her, Bethany created Archland, a world with deep forests, rolling hills, and fierce winters, home to dozens of fairy tale characters.

When she is not writing, Bethany is a voracious reader, known to finish the likes of "Seraphina" by Rachel Hartman in two sittings (it was a great book)! Her favorite writers are, in no particular order, Sir Thomas Malory, J.K. Rowling, John Keats, Victor Hugo, Kendare Blake, Jay Asher, Toni Morrison, and Marissa Meyer. This list is by no means complete. She is about to earn her Bachelor's of Arts in English from SUNY Geneseo and plans to continue her education in literature in graduate school. Besides all things literary, Bethany enjoys archery and bow hunting, drawing, playing piano, and volunteering with ministries in her community. She currently lives in Western New York with four dogs, twenty-ish chickens (she lost count), a lizard, and a couple of frogs.

Beyond the Fortuneteller's Tent (Beyond #1)

When Petra Baron goes into the fortuneteller’s tent at a Renaissance fair, she expects to leave with a date to prom. Instead, she walks out into Elizabethan England, where she meets gypsies, a demon dog and a kindred spirit in Emory Ravenswood.

Emory must thwart the plans of religious zealots. His mission is dangerous, his enemies are fanatical, and Petra Baron is a complication that Heaven only knows he does not need. Or does he? Although Emory is on Heaven’s errand, he learned long ago that Heaven does not always play fair.

As Petra slowly falls for Emory, she wonders if he really is who he seems, or if he is just as lost as she is. How can they have a future while trapped in the past? Or is anything possible Beyond the Fortuneteller’s Tent?

Beyond the Hollow (Beyond #2)

Petra Baron and her immortal boyfriend, Emory Ravenswood, are living their happily in modern day Orange County, California, until Dane shows up: a heart-stoppingly handsome man from Petra's past. Petra can't remember Dane, or anything else about her time in Tarrytown, New York two hundred years ago. But Emory does remember, and he knows she's lucky to have forgotten all about Dane and the nightmarish episode in 1810.

After Emory disappears, Petra is determined to find him again. Yet she doesn’t know whether Dane can lead her to Emory, or to the nightmare she can’t remember. The one thing she does know is that once upon a time really means two hundred years ago, and that if she wants to find Emory the first place to look is Sleepy Hollow, 1810.

With a collection of Washington Irving's writings in her hand, and a prayer that some nine-pin-playing ghosts will give her a drink of the same magic ale they gave Rip Van Winkle, Petra heads into another time-defying adventure.

January 30 @ A Backwards Story

Enchanted

It isn't easy being the rather overlooked and unhappy youngest sibling to sisters named for the other six days of the week. Sunday’s only comfort is writing stories, although what she writes has a terrible tendency to come true.

When Sunday meets an enchanted frog who asks about her stories, the two become friends. Soon that friendship deepens into something magical. One night Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him back into Rumbold, the crown prince of Arilland—and a man Sunday’s family despises.

The prince returns to his castle, intent on making Sunday fall in love with him as the man he is, not the frog he was. But Sunday is not so easy to woo. How can she feel such a strange, strong attraction for this prince she barely knows? And what twisted secrets lie hidden in his past - and hers?

Hero

Rough and tumble Saturday Woodcutter thinks she's the only one of her sisters without any magic—until the day she accidentally conjures an ocean in the backyard. With her sword in tow, Saturday sets sail on a pirate ship, only to find herself kidnapped and whisked off to the top of the world. Is Saturday powerful enough to kill the mountain witch who holds her captive and save the world from sure destruction? And, as she wonders grumpily, "Did romance have to be part of the adventure?" As in Enchanted, readers will revel in the fragments of fairy tales that embellish this action-packed story of adventure and, yes, romance.

The Fairytale Keeper: Avenging the Queen

Anonymous, nameless, Adelaide Schumacher should have been lost to history. Medieval girls do not make legends. If they are lucky to live long enough, they make babies.

Adelaide’s mother, Katrina was the finest storyteller in Cologne, but she left one story untold, that of her daughter, Snow White. A rampant fever claimed Adelaide’s mother just like a thousand others in Cologne where the dead are dumped in a vast pit outside the city walls. In an effort to save Katrina’s soul, Adelaide’s family obtains a secret funeral by bribing the parish priest, Father Soren.

Soren commits an unforgivable atrocity, pushing Adelaide toward vengeance, but the corruption in Cologne reaches far beyond Soren, and the cost of settling scores quickly escalates. Avenging the mother she lost may cost Adelaide everything she has left: her father, her friends, her first love, and maybe even her life.

The Fairytale Keeper casts the famous villains, heroes, and damsels of Grimm’s fairytales into Medieval lives. Seamlessly weaving historical events and Grimm’s fairytales into a tale of corruption and devotion, The Fairytale Keeper, leaves the reader wondering where fact ends, and fiction begins.
