Review: Numbers Game by Rebecca Rode

Numbers Game (Numbers Game Saga Book 1) by Rebecca Rode
417 pages, March 2015, Dystopian/YA
My Rating: 4 Stars
Source: I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Description: Treena is nervous for Rating Day. A single number will brand her forever—a valuable citizen, or a pathetic waste of space. Her top-Rated boyfriend is confident their scores will coincide so they can attend the academy together. But when the big day arrives, her true number shocks everyone.

To get her life and boyfriend back, she must go undercover and expose a military spy. Doesn’t sound too hard, except that someone wants her dead. And then there’s Vance, the mysterious soldier with a haunted past and beautiful brown eyes. Together, they discover a dark numbers conspiracy, one that shatters the nation’s future. Treena must join up with Vance if she is to survive the dangerous game of numbers—and the terrible war that rages within her heart.

My Review:  This story started out a little slow for me, as I was trying to figure out what was going on and who was who. Once everything clicked, I was completely wrapped up in the story. I will say this--the chapters go back and forth between two characters, Treena and Vance. Not every chapter alternates (sometimes one character will take a couple of chapters in a row) and for awhile, it took me a page or two to figure out who was speaking. And then I noticed that at the beginning of each chapter, there is a symbol. The necklace symbol is from Treena's view and the flames symbol is from Vance's.

This world has some similar elements to most of the popular Dystopians, yet there were some very unique aspects. I liked that it wasn't quite as violent as some of the other stories out there. The story happens at a fast pace and really kept my attention, but I hated to rush over the romance too fast.

I liked Treena. She is a very persistent and determined character who really goes after what she wants. I would be terrified to do some of the things she was asked to do, yet she did them in order to accomplish what she set her mind to do. I couldn't understand what she saw in her boyfriend. However, I really liked Vance. He's kind of a brooder, but when it comes down to it, he's loyal and protective.

There were so many twists in this story. Just when I thought I had things figured out, a wrench was thrown into it and I was taken by surprise. Things happened quickly--only two weeks happened over a 400+ page book--sometimes things have to move quickly and I could feel the urgency. I was surprised by the ending and love that it's left open for more.

Content: mild romance (kissing); no language or religious elements; mild-moderate violence (deaths, fighting, etc). I would consider it clean for a more mature reader.

Review: Falling for Rayne (Love and Flowers Trilogy Book 1) by Shannon Guymon

Falling for Rayne: Book 1 in the Love and Flowers Trilogy by Shannon Guymon
2014, 253 pages, Clean Contemporary Adult Romance
My Rating: 5 Stars

Description: Garrett Murphy is used to rejection. As a child, he was rejected by his mother and as a man he was rejected by Jane Kendall. Going without love has turned Garrett into a man who doesn't trust in a woman's heart. So when he meets Rayne Nyman, she's too good to be true. She's beautiful, talented and sweet. She also happens to be a world renowned pianist. He knows there's no way she'd ever want to stay in Fircest with him when she could be living the life she was born to. Rayne is determined to prove him wrong and show him that love can be forever but when she comes under fire and her life is put in danger, she might not have the chance.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22590881-falling-for-rayne

My Review: I fell in love with these characters right off the bat. We see Garrett in the Love and Dessert trilogy and he kind of seemed like a jerk then, but now? He's a big sweetheart. It just goes to show that there is someone for everyone and love can soften the toughest man.

I felt sorry for Rayne. She's rich, she's a famous concert pianist, and she's beautiful, but she's had a very sheltered and controlled life. Now that her parents are dead, she can live the life she wants to live--but she's also living a life in danger. She believes that her parents were murdered and someone seems to be after her.

Rayne is a likable character--one who finds joy in the journey and in the little things. I love how she's learning to be spontaneous and really comes into her true self. I also enjoyed getting to know her younger sister and their body guard. I can tell this is going to be a great trilogy! Garrett is a war vet and is fiercely protective of those he cares about. I love how he's very traditional, yet he's also in tune with his gut and what he needs to do. He's a funny guy and a manly man--just completely adorable.

This is a sweet, darling romance with some action and mystery included and I'm looking forward to the next book!

Content: mild romance (kissing); no language; mild religious elements; mild-moderate violence (beatings, attempted murder, shooting--no graphic details). Clean!

"Small towns have big stories." That was a lesson Katie's father taught her years ago. A lesson she's taken to heart. And right now, Katie is desperate for a big story. Reeling from the recent loss of her father and with her agent breathing down her neck for the next book, the twenty-one-year-old writer picks a spot on the map and finds herself bound for a middle-of-nowhere town called Bishopville, South Carolina.

Taking a chance on the words of a local grocer, Katie stumbles upon a rare breed of dogs raised by the town doctor and his nephew Kyle. The only problem? Kyle isn't interested in telling stories, especially not to a big-city girl who can't seem to sit still. In an attempt to win him over as the clock winds down, Katie finds herself immersed in Kyle's world, doing everything but writing.

When inspiration finally strikes, Katie is faced with an unforeseen catastrophe and a truth she can no longer ignore. While she has come to love the dogs, the real story may be about Kyle Walker.

Guest Post:
I recently moved from Florida to Oregon and during my first trip to the grocery I discovered one very
unique fact: no one in the northwest has heard of pimiento cheese.

You can't find it anywhere. Wal-Mart, Safeway, Albertson's, Trader Joes. Nothing. No pimiento cheese.

When I asked a clerk in Albertson's if they carried pimiento cheese, he looked at me like I had three
heads.

So, after this absolutely terrible realization I decided the world needs to know about pimiento cheese,
and the greatest thing you can make with it: a pimiento cheeseburger. Of course, Kyle Walker just so
happens to make one of these special burgers for Katie Price, in Hope In Every Raindrop.

Ingredients required:

 Pimiento cheese
 Lean ground round
 Hamburger buns
 Thousand Island dressing
 Lettuce
 Bacon (optional)

Step 1. Grill the burger to perfection.
Step 2. One minute prior to taking the burger off the grill, cover the burger with pimiento cheese.
Depending on the size of the burger this will usually be 2 tablespoons.
Step 3. Prepare the top bun, by adding lettuce and a few teaspoons of Thousand Island dressing.
Step 4. Place the burger on the bun. (Don't overestimate this step, haha)
Step 5. Enjoy good southern food!

Doesn't that look soooo good?! I need to try this recipe out!

Excerpt

Ryan’s eyes seared into mine. “I was hoping I would get to dance with you tonight.”
“You were?”
“Yes, but you’ve been quite popular.” He pulled back a tad and looked down at my dress. “You look very …”
“Please don’t say grown up.”
He smiled and shook his head. “I wasn’t going to say that, I was going to say …” he tried to think of something.
“You were going to say it, weren’t you?”
He sighed. “Charlee, you really know how to make a guy feel inadequate don’t you.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I find I like it.”
“You do?”
He nodded his head. “I also find you to be very …” he hesitated.
“Very what?”
“Beautiful and annoyingly charming.”
“How can somebody be annoying and charming at the same time?”
“See what I mean?” He winked.
In my heels, we were practically eye level, and our faces were mere inches apart. I could smell the sweet smell of honey on his breath; I wanted more than anything to taste it, and the way he was looking at me at that moment, I thought maybe he felt the same way. His eyes quickly turned to confusion though before he pulled me a little closer. I rested my head against his and swayed against him. It was even better than I imagined. I wanted the dance to last forever.
“By the way,” I whispered in his ear. “I find you very beautiful too.”

Review: Tough Love (Book 3 in the Love and Trust Trilogy) by Shannon Guymon

Tough Love: Book 3 in the Love and Trust Trilogy by Shannon Guymon
2014, 244 pages, Clean Adult Romance
My Rating: 4 Stars

Description: Taryn Downing has made a name for herself as a smart, tough businesswoman. The title she doesn't want though is Cougar. But Brogan Moore, the man she has feelings for has given her an ultimatum: Tell the world they're together, or he walks. As Taryn watches Brogan walk out of her life, she has to ask herself, if her pride is more important than Love. Taryn isn't the only one who has issues with pride and image though. Brogan will have to decide if Taryn is the woman for him, or if his parents are right and he would be better off playing it safe.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21939194-tough-love?from_search=true&search_version=serviceMy Review: I know plenty of couples where the woman is older than the man--or the woman is taller than the man, but I totally get how that can be a big deal to some women. And that's exactly the issue that Taryn has with Brogan. Brogan is a few year younger than Taryn and he's the little brother of her high school best friend. It's really hard for her to get over that fact and deal with the grown up version--the one who is head-over-heels for her. She just can't let all of her hard work in the business world go up in flames by letting everyone know that they're together.

On the other hand, Taryn's mother is pressuring her to marry and Brogan's parents want him to end up with anyone but her. With so many outside factors pulling and tugging this couple back and forth, it's really hard to make a relationship work. I thought it was ironic that Brogan wants to be treated like the adult he is, yet he acts so childish at times. These two took turns acting in a childish manner with lots of drama until everything comes to a head and big, permanent decisions have to be made. I have to admit, some of these immature behaviors had me laughing, but there were some great heart-tugging and tender moments too.

I love the strong family loyalty and relationships that were emphasized in this story, as well as the sweet romantic moments. This is a great ending to a fun trilogy.

Content: mild romance (kissing, implied teen sex with NO details); no language; mild violence. Clean!

The two are put in a life threatening situation that only Bizwat, a Procyon commando, and Aoléon’s friend can save them from.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24810191-science-fiction-series-aoleon-the-martian-girl-part-3-the-hollow-moon
My Review: Part Three of this saga was really intense and full of action, which is definitely going to be appealing to a middle grade reader. Aoleon and Gilbert make a discover about this planet and their milk supply, which answers a few questions that were raised previously. They also find themselves in a very scary situation while Aoleon is taking her flight test. I had no idea how it would all resolve and was surprised at the twist. And finally, Gilbert gets to skyboard for the first time...only to be caught in the middle of a chase. Each one of these events had me flipping pages to see how it would all end up. There are a few more elements to the mystery to wrap up and I know the last two installments are going to be really good getting to that point.Once again, the graphics don't disappoint and they're as detailed as ever. I still can't get over how vivid the colors are and how minute details are done and I spend several minutes examining each illustration. My favorites in this book were the ones in the skyboarding scene.I enjoy these books because they really engage my imagination and draw me into the story. I'm not creative and I can really appreciate the author's way of taking some things familiar and putting a spin on them to trigger that thirst for knowledge in a younger reader. I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends up. Content: there is some mild violence that isn't graphic.

Review: These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

These Broken Stars: A Starbound Novel (The Starbound Trilogy Book 1) by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
Hardcover, 374 pages, Published December 10th 2013 by Disney Hyperion
Genre: Romantic YA Science Fiction

Description: Luxury spaceliner Icarus suddenly plummets from hyperspace into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive -- alone. Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a cynical war hero. Both journey across the eerie deserted terrain for help. Everything changes when they uncover the truth.

The Starbound Trilogy: Three worlds. Three love stories. One enemy.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13138635-these-broken-stars?from_search=true&search_version=serviceMy Review:  The story begins with a very Titanic feel to it. I never would've thought of a luxury ship in space, but that's exactly where this ship is. Lilac is rich and spoiled and Tarver is a young war hero. Together, they escape the doomed ship and end up stranded alone on a foreign, deserted planet, where they must make a journey for help.

Lilac is a great character, although I didn't like her at first. She does what she has to do to keep her father's reputation where he wants it to be. When she is forced to stand on her own, her many facets really come to life and we get to know who she really is and to see her great courage and strength.

Tarver. He's cynical and good-looking, but he does whatever he can to survive and to help Lilac do the same. He's a good compliment to Lilac and is able to turn on the military mode in an instant, which helps them out. I really liked his character and his drive, especially when his shell is cracked and we get to see the real Tarver.

There were many strange things that happened that had me curious, confused, and eager to learn what was going on. There is so much creativity placed in the events and it was fascinating to see it all unfold, especially the twists. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read more about this place.

Content: moderate language (a few words used a lot, especially at the beginning); moderate romance (kissing, implied intimate relationship--no details); moderate violence (deaths especially).

Review: The Vagabond Vicar by Charlotte Brentwood

The Vagabond Vicar by Charlotte Brentwood
2014, 279 pages, Regency Romance

Source: I received a copy in exchange for an honest review
My Rating: 3.5 Stars

Description: William Brook is an idealistic young cleric, desperate to escape dreary England for a mission adventure in exotic lands. It's his worst nightmare come true when he is posted to a parish in a small backwater village, populated with small-minded people and husband-hunting mamas. He’s determined not to form any ties and to escape the country as an independent single man.

A free spirit, Cecilia Grant is perfectly content to remain in her family home in Amberley village - when she's not wandering the countryside at all hours painting. Marriage options are few, but that won't stop her mother from engineering a match with one of the ruling family's sons. Cecilia attempts to win the man, but what is it about the new vicar and his brooding ways that is so appealing? Could he be the only one who has ever really understood her, and can she discover what he is running away from?

As William struggles not to fall in love with the lady's intoxicating beauty and mysterious eccentricity, he finds himself drawn into the lives of the villagers, despite their best efforts to alienate the newcomer. When he makes it clear he's not sticking around, Cecilia strives to restrain her blossoming feelings for him. Just when it seems love may triumph, dark secrets are revealed in Amberley and a scandal from William’s past may see the end of not only his career, but his chance at finding an everlasting love.

The Vagabond Vicar is an unashamedly romantic historical novel you'll fall in love with. If you love Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, can't get enough of Downton Abbey or Cranford, or just prefer old-fashioned boy-meets-girl stories, try reading Charlotte Brentwood.

Sensuality level: sweet (only kissing)
Please note, although there is some mention of religious subject matter due to the hero's occupation, this is not an "inspirational" novel.

My Review: I could relate to some of the characters in The Vagabond Vicar in one way or another and in this case, especially the vicar. I sometimes have a plan of what I want to have happen in life and when it doesn't go my way, I try to make the best of it, but secretly long for more. That's just what the vicar, William, does. He dreams of spreading the good word to people in exotic places, where they are dying for the truth. Unfortunately, he finds himself stuck in England, and in a small town set it its ways.  Despite his best efforts to be reassigned, he has to stick it out for awhile. Since he's not sticking around, he doesn't plan on love.

As in most small towns, there are some interesting characters. Mothers are lining up to make a match between the vicar and their daughters and he does a good job of evading them. The men try and reject him, until he makes it clear that he doesn't want to stay. The Barringtons are an interesting bunch, as is their maid, Amy, who also happens to be good friends with Cecilia.

Cecilia goes against the grain and doesn't give much thought to being a proper young woman. She is definitely unique, yet beautiful, and is easily distracted. She's determined not to fall for the young vicar, just as he's determined not to fall for her. There's a subtle humor to the story, as well as bits of mystery and intrigue that captures the reader's attention, but it is a gently flowing story.

The romance is sweet and the characters are entertaining. I especially enjoyed the interactions between William and Cecelia, because I never quite knew what I was going to get.
