CHRISTMAS COOKIES

I get it that a lot of people don’t bake anymore. Slice and bake or pick up from the local bakery
or grocery store. As long as they look like Christmas cookies that’s good enough, right?
Well, not in my house. Every year I make hundreds—bordering on a thousand—Christmas
cookies for friends and family. I mail them all over the country and to Canada. I know. I must be
nuts. That’s another thing. I order my nuts from a local charity every year. If I’m not Suzanne’s
larger client/supporter, then the honor must go to a retailer. I plow through a lot of nuts, butter,
flour and sugar.

In HOME FOR CHRISTMAS, Mrs. Beabots is in her kitchen making several kinds of cookies to
give to her charities and friends. Little Titus is all about the end result and licking those beaters.
But when he reaches for a beater while the mixer is still going, Adam, helicopter Dad, nearly
loses it. Calm Joy embraces frightened Titus and saves the moment for both father and son. And
Adam sees the compassionate side of Joy he’d forgotten.
Join me in a sniff of sugar, cinnamon and butter baking in the oven as you read the pages of
HOME FOR CHRISTMAS.

Merry Christmas to All!

He's ready to settle down…with or without her

Scott Abbott has always loved Isabelle Hawks. And he's always been her rock. Patient, dependable, strong. But lately, she's been acting like that rock is weighing her down. With her art career taking off, Isabelle has been spending less and less time in Indian Lake…and with him. Scott isn't even sure what they are to each other anymore. They might be friends with a history, but it sure doesn't feel like a future. Maybe it's time for Scott to set her free and focus on his own dreams. A real home. A family. All the things he had hoped to share with her…

Guest Post:

SCOTT’S DREAMS
Scott Abbott is one of those truly decent guys that come along one in your lifetime, if you’re lucky. He, like Isabelle, the heroine, was introduced in the first novel in the series, LOVE SHADOWS.  Scott owns  The Book Shop and Java Stop as well as being a reporter for the local newspaper. He grew up in Indian Lake and in high school, he had a crush on Isabelle, but after he went off to college to earn his journalism degree, Isabelle was left behind, working hard to help her mother pay for college tuitions for her brothers and sisters. Scott forgot about Isabelle only months after being on campus. His eyes were opened in and out of the lecture halls and once he landed a job at The Chicago Tribune, he couldn’t imagine a life any more boring than living in Indian Lake. Scott’s dreams exploded as he took on every assignment given him and explored political and criminal investigations on his own. Scott’s eyes were focused on Pulitzer Prizes. Fame. Immortality in his written word.
When Scott’s mother, Theresa, becomes seriously ill at the same time as cataclysmic media changes were taking place in newspapers around the globe, Scott astutely read the situation for what it was. There were no Pulitzers in his future. He quit his job and moved to Indian Lake to care for his mother. With his savings and a small loan from his mother, Scott renovated a hundred year old building on Main Street and opened his book shop.
It was at a holiday party at Mrs. Beabots’s house that Scott saw Isabelle again and this time, he fell head over heels. Isabelle was immersed, if not obsessed with her faerie paintings. She talked of nothing else. Scott knew instantly that to win her, he would have to play it cool. He would be patient. He would be her best friend and surely, she would come to see what was right before her eyes.
Walking the razor edge of Isabelle’s new gallery showing with her, Scott’s patience has run out. He doesn’t mind supporting Isabelle, but he has yet to hear that she loves him. He wants a commitment about their future.
At the same time, Scott has just written an article about Trent Davis’s heroic take down of a dangerous Mexican drug cartel and the story was picked up by the wires. Trent agrees to allow  Scott to cover a drug bust. That night, Scott discovers five year old Bella, and eighteen month old Michael. His heart breaks, expands and is immediately owned by the little girl and her brother.
When Scott applies to become a foster parent to the two children who would go into the State Foster Care system, Isabelle is rocked and shocked. She’s always had Scott’s undivided attention. Now, she must share him.
Through Scott’s decision to become a Foster Parent, Isabelle must face her own self-centeredness and the fact that she has ignored many of her own needs.

Girl in the Spotlight
by Virginia McCullough
Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 384 pages
June 1st 2017 by Harlequin Heartwarming

The daughter they never knew

When Miles Jenkins sees the graceful young figure skater on TV, he can't believe how much she resembles Lark McGee, the girl he dated briefly in college. Could this aspiring star be the child Lark gave up for adoption eighteen years ago? He has to find out.

Locating Lark ignites conflicting emotions in Miles—including regrets for what might have been and romantic feelings that take the two single parents by surprise. As they prepare to meet their daughter, this deeper connection between the two just might be the chance at love they never got.

Advanced Praise

Mesmerized by the real world of characters--brought to life beautifully, I found myself entranced by this thoughtful, delightful, sad, and joyous, novel about second chances and all forms of love. The situation, characters, and consequences left me shedding happy tears at the ending. — Casey Clifford, award-winning author

A compelling love story crafted with characters you'll fall in love with. Miles and Lark's journey to be reunited with their child captured my heart, as did their blossoming romance. The best book I have read this year! —Lily Silver, author of Dark Hero

McCullough is always adept at creating suspense on multiple levels. In Girl in the Spotlight, the intrigue builds from page one and doesn’t let up until the end. But she understands that readers need relief from tension, and through her masterful storytelling and perfect pacing, McCullough delivers satisfying outcomes along that way. The relationships she’s developed are complex and realistic, and their evolution is deeply satisfying. — Lynda McDaniel, author of A Life for a Life

Girl in the Spotlight swept me away to Wisconsin's Lake Michigan shore and reminded me of loves left behind. McCullough invokes deep emotions through her writing, which will pull at your heart. More than a romantic love story, it is a love story of parents for their children. A must read."  — Anne Parent, author/reviewer

Guest Post:
Who are Lark and Miles?

When Miles and Lark met as college students both confided their big career dreams. It was such a
pleasure to portray a guy who early in life chose to become a professional speaker/consultant. I’m
familiar with that life, so I know how much time speakers spend in airports and hotel rooms, with phones and laptops as their only companions.

Fit and tall, with dark hair and eyes, Miles is 39, and looks great in his work clothes, a suit and tie. On his best days, he’s with Brooke, his 8-year old daughter. He and his ex-wife Andi (hint—I tell her
story in Book 3 of my Two Moon Bay series) share custody of Brooke and he does his best to co-parent and give his little girl what she needs. It so happens Miles is a pretty good dancer. Lark remembers that.

Lark was drawn to Miles because he knew what he wanted—and so did she. When she got sidetracked, her dream of becoming a journalist went by the wayside, but not for long. Focused and
serious, Lark is an expert at keeping secrets, even from her best friend Dawn (hint—I tell Dawn’s story in book 2), and she’s stubborn enough to go her own way, too. Contrary to a lot of unasked for advice, she chose to buy a small cottage on Lake Michigan, where her desk offers a view of sunrises and the moon rising over the lake.

When they were young, Miles admired Lark’s light brown hair and bright blue eyes and wide smile—he still does. To him, she’s barely changed at all. Emotional and intensely private, Lark credits a trip out of the country with helping her steer her life back on track, but she’s not truly made peace with the past. Until now.

Reconnecting opens Lark and Miles to possibilities and second chances they never imagined
possible.

The Dangerous Life of a Drug Task Detective

There’s not a city, town or hamlet in the United States that are not affected by illegal drug sales, drug addiction, overdoses and drug related deaths. For all the families struggling with this horror, and mine is no exception, drug addiction of a loved one can be overwhelming, frightening and yes, dangerous.
The small town that I live in is just such a very real place. In fact, our county is one of the top two “dangerous” drug areas in the state of Indiana. We have more drug-related deaths than any other county---at the moment. As each weekend approaches, many of us brace for the overdose deaths we will read about in the newspaper. There’s even a billboard as you drive into town, posting the number of drug-related 911 calls each week and the total of deaths for the year.
I interviewed several Drug Task Force officers for this book.  Their stories were dark, harrowing, shocking and terrifying. From all aspects, the officers being called to the scene face all kinds of dangers, including the parents of the addicts or drug dealers who are in so much denial they will not only lie to the officers, but will physically attack an officer. Then the officer is required/expected to perform his duty and arrest the parent when in fact, this diversion only allows the drug dealer time to escape.
Several of my interviewees have been on multiple “stings”. Some of these well-orchestrated “stings” required a great deal of stake-outs, much like we see in movies. Boring, time-consuming and frustrating in their lack of progress. At the same time, stake-outs eventually produce results.
Though I asked, I was never allowed to accompany an officer on a stake-out or sting. I’m sure most John Q Citizens wouldn’t want to “go there” but if I had the chance I would have gone.
My observation was that our officers are not paid enough monetarily, or in respect for all and everything that they do to protect our towns and cities, our everyday lives. Too often we forget they are “there” all around us. Our concern is a speeding ticket. His/her concern is a bullet through the head.
One of the most incredible incidents that occurred during the writing of this book was at my job. For those who don’t know, I’m the financial manager for my brother-in-law’s dental office. One Monday morning, I came in and asked one of our “girls/assistants” how her weekend was. She was shaken and said, “I was a victim of a drive by shooting.”
She then related to me that her son-in-law…a Drug Task Force team member for the local police had been the target of a gang drive by. However, the gang had shot up the nearby “guest house” on the large farm where my employee and her family live in both the “big farm house” and the “guest house.”  Because one of the gang members had been arrested and jailed two days prior, the rest of the gang members decided to “teach the cop a lesson”.  They shot up both houses and his police car.
The bullet missed my employee’s head by inches. She could have been killed.
This is the kind of terror that happens in the everyday life of our men and women in blue.
If that isn’t THE DANGER ZONE, I don’t know what is.

Ruby McCoy is haunted by her father's sins....

When Ruby McCoy arrives in Fairplay, her ornate carriage is followed by an entourage who heft steamer trunks, hatboxes, and traveling bags into the hotel…where she has booked the entire second floor. Upon her notorious gangster father's death, the now-wealthy Ruby, hiding under her mother's maiden name, set out to right her father's wrongs. Ruby is determined to spend every penny of her inherited "blood money" on those who paid the price for her father's crimes.

Sheriff Rex Truett doesn't trust Ruby and doesn't care who knows it. The keeper of Fairplay's law and order makes it his business to find out why a stranger, especially a beautiful, spoiled, rich, female stranger, would set up businesses, donate to schools, hire workmen to rebuild houses, and provide access to the best medical care. But when a typhoid epidemic sweeps through the city, he is forced to reconsider.

Will Rex blame Ruby for her father's sins? Or will he accept the possibility that she is trying to create and feel the peace her father stole?

Praise for the Book

Healing of the Heart, book three of Secrets on Sterling Street, makes for a brilliant conclusion to the series. Lough’s descriptive narrative and delightful, often comical, dialogue pull us into the story. Sparks fly between Rex, the hard-shelled sheriff, and Ruby, the gutsy, gorgeous heroine. This fast-paced, absorbing read will have you flipping those pages into the wee morning hours. Don’t miss it!”

“Loree Lough has once again brought the emotional intensity and passion of the West to life in her riveting historical romance, Healing of the Heart. With themes of forgiveness, righting wrongs done by others, and love that can wipe away the sins the past, this book explores all of that in the midst of the fierce and deadly beauty of Colorado in in the late 1800s. A story to treasure more than once.”

“This just might be my favorite story by Loree Lough. Her characters, driven by noble motives, endure hardships that can’t crush their budding emotions. Healing of the Heart is romance, faith, and mystery in one page-turning story.”

Guest Post:

Five Ways to Love Your Enemy:
  1. THINK about him. Reject any anger that might surface. Don’t focus on the words or deeds that created the gap between you. Close your eyes and chant “I’m bigger than this. I’m better than this. Holding on to these memories is only hurting me.” In Healing of the Heart, Ruby McCoy is having a tough time with this. Her father was a murdering outlaw. The shame of his crimes—and what they forced her to do—has impacted every area of her life, so really, who can blame her!

  2. PRETEND you are your enemy. Now that you’re calmer, take the age-old advice and put yourself in his shoes. What happened in his past that might have inspired him to hurt you? This is a tough one but, was there anything you could have done or said differently to prevent the rift? In Ruby’s case, this won’t be easy. Making restitution to people her father’s crimes effected requires secrecy, duplicity, and on occasion, outright lies…which deepens her resentment of him. Try as she might, Ruby can’t come up with a rational justification for his actions!

  3. WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? I know, I know…corny. But it’s really effective. Looking at the situation through His eyes will go a long way to helping you understand why the rift has become so central to your life. If Ruby is ever to know peace, and true freedom from bitterness, she must stop judging her father and simply forgive him.

  4. DEAL WITH IT. You’re right. That’s nearly impossible! Sometimes, the heart wound is so deep, you just can’t get past it. Okay. That’s human. But think about how it makes you feel: Sad. Angry. Resentful. And the feelings bleed into every area of life, infecting every happy moment with cynicism. Not pleasant, is it. So look for things to focus on that you’re your life enjoyable: Friends and family. Pets. A craft project. An upcoming vacation. Then, every time the rift comes to mind, dwell instead on one of those blessings. In Ruby’s case, she needs to think more often of the good things her father did…reading stories at bedtime, teaching her to fish, singing as they walked the trails behind their house…

  5. GET IN TOUCH. When you stop saying “Is she crazy? No way!”, be honest with yourself… Once upon a time, you cared deeply for your enemy. If you hadn’t, the hurt wouldn’t be so deep and long-lasting, now would it. Why did you love him? Ask yourself another question: What’s stopping you from getting in touch? Time really does have a way of softening the sharp edges of pain, so who knows? He might feel such relief at the sound of your voice that he’ll go along with you “What’s past is past” attitude! Worst case scenario, he’ll hang up. Maybe he’ll say something hurtful before he does. But that, believe it or not, is a gift in and of itself…from him to you: He has handed you proof that he doesn’t belong in your life or in your heart. And now, you’re free to move forward, chanting “I’m bigger than this. I’m better than this. Holding on to these memories is only hurting me.” And now, you’ll mean it! Poor Ruby will never have that satisfaction, because her outlaw father was captured, tried and convicted, and hanged for his crimes...

Nell Holstrom wanted no part of her grandfather's barren gold mine that had taken the lives of her mother, father, and younger brother; even if there may still be hidden wealth inside. Instead, she went to Denver and took a job as housekeeper at the old Stone Hill Inn.

Asa Stone was barely more than a boy when his father dragged him and his brothers to fight with Colonel John Chivington. But Asa refused to participate in the raid on the peaceful Cheyenne and Arapahoe; and when the smoke cleared, his father and brother lay among the slaughtered. Besieged by guilt, Asa wandered the West for years before returning to Denver to rebuild the old inn he'd inherited.

Together, Nell and Asa work hard to restore Stone Hill. But when disaster hits the inn, Asa retreats into despair and Nell is forced to return to her family's mine. Asa faces the hard fact: He'll never be the man Nell deserves. Can he overcome the dark secrets of his past? And will Nell still love him when she learns the truth?
