Description: Science Fiction Book - Part 1 First Contact - Aoleon The Martian Girl
Crop circles magically appear in Farmer Johnson’s field. A mysterious light sweeps over the night sky and awakens Farmer Johnson and Gilbert, the boy next door.
Curious, Gilbert ventures out to discover the source of the light and stumbles into a beautiful Martian girl sitting in a crop circle. Farmer Johnson also investigates the strange light, and thinking that Gilbert and Aoléon are vandals, he chases them. But they sprint to Aoléon’s saucer and escape only to be pursued by the U.S. Air Force.
Gilbert has never been attacked by swarms of giant killer robots. Never met strange aliens from other worlds. Never skyboarded across a megalopolis hidden deep inside an extinct volcano. Never trekked across a vast Martian desert. And never been eaten alive by a gigantic slor (well, almost never, unless you count Billy the fat bully at school).
And luckily, he has never ever confronted an evil ruler of Mars bent on conquering the Earth to steal its cows.
Never...until now!
This may be the adventure Gilbert always wished for.
If only he can survive.

My Review: Science Fiction isn't my typical genre, but I knew I'd be interested in this one, if only to have something to read along with my kids. My 9 and 12 year olds are very interested in space and talk about it, look up videos on it, read books about it, etc. all the time. This is a great story, full of adventure and imagination that will get kids reading, especially if they have any interest at all in space or Martians. I felt that some of the words would go over my kids' heads, but there's a great list at the end that explains what everything is, which is great in helping them build their vocabulary. At the very beginning, there was a link to download an audio version. I'm sure that's great, but if you do that, you'll miss out on the fantastic illustrations that are found throughout the story! These pictures are realistic, yet cartoonish, and really capture what's going on. I loved the space chase images, but then I saw the pictures of space and the Martian city and was astounded. I had to spend a few minutes studying them.
Gilbert is an average boy, but finds himself in a unique situation with a mission to accomplish. I love how he embraces life and its adventures, especially once he meets Aoleon, a Martian. I got caught up in their story and wondered how it would all play out....and then it ended. I'm glad there are more parts to the story because I'm curious to see how it'll come together.
There are funny moments, especially involving adults in the story, making them seem a bit bumbling, which I'm sure kids will find humorous. I'm looking forward to getting to know these characters better and can't wait to see what will happen next!
