Blog Tour Review: The Girl From the Hidden Forest by Hannah Linder

The Girl From the Hidden Forest by Hannah Linder

Blurb:

The nightmares may free her…but destroy the man she loves.

Enjoy another Gothic Style Regency from Hannah Linder.

Eliza Ellis has stayed hidden in Balfour Forest for as long as she can remember. Perhaps her only friends are the trees, or her little dog, or her story-telling father called Captain. But at least she is safe from the cruel world outside, a world Captain has warned her against and protected her from.

That is, until a handsome stranger named Felton Northwood invades her quiet forest and steals her away. Why does he tell such lies? Why does he insist that her name is Miss Eliza Gillingham, daughter of a viscount, who disappeared fourteen years ago after the murder of her own mother? A murder Eliza is said to have witnessed.

When Felton returns Eliza to Monbury Manor and reunites her with a man who is told to be her father, all she remembers are the strange nightmares that have plagued her since childhood. Why have they suddenly grown worse? Are the answers hidden inside her own mind?

As danger mounts and lethal attempts are made on her life, Eliza and Felton must work together to uncover the identity of a killer who has stayed silent for fourteen years. When she finally uncovers the horrendous memories trapped in her mind, will divulging the truth cost her the man she loves—and both of their lives?
 My Review: 4 Stars

This is my first book by hannahlinder and I was captivated by the intense gothic regency vibe.

Eliza has happily lived in the forest for as long as she can remember and it’s all she knows, until handsome Felton finds her and “rescues” her from it. A world of danger, intrigue, “who dun it” mysteries and attempts on Eliza’s life result from this deliverance, and a beautiful, dramatic, and heart-aching story unfolds.

I was amazed at the vivid descriptions and while this story felt a little darker, I was completely fascinated and intrigued from start to finish with all the twists and turns. I appreciated the Christian elements and felt they really solidified the nature of these dimensional characters.

There is a lot of drama and trauma, and these times are confusing to Eliza, but Linder does a wonderful job of expressing the villainous aspects, as well as the heroic ones, in ways that felt real and raw.

Content: kidnapping, opium use, mistreating family, Christian elements (prayers/thoughts), mild romance, murder/death/suicide/abuse

Inventing Vivian by Jennifer Moore {Blog Tour Review and Giveaway}

4.5 Stars

I love a book with a good, strong female lead and it was especially fun to watch Vivian develop her love of science. The Blue Orchid society is a wonderfully diverse and solid group of innovative young ladies in the Victorian era and it's such a joy to delve into each of their stories.

Vivian is very smart and not afraid to be true to herself. She's a sharp character that was a delight to read about and I just adored her. I loved Lord Benedict and the whole situation regarding him. Moore always introduces a thread to her stories that aren't the norm for the time periods she writes in, and this whole series is evident of that. The Chinese element was enjoyable and interesting as well.

Solid characters with a solid plot. Personally, I wanted more romance, since this is labeled as a Victorian romance, but all in all, this is a very entertaining book in a wonderful series and I'm anticipating the rest of the Society's stories.

Content: very mild romance; very mild moments of violence/peril

Warming Hearts at Walmart Tour -- with author Catherine Lanigan {Spotlight and Giveaway}

On tour with Prism Book Tours.

I'm so lucky to be able to host Catherine Lanigan on this
Heartwarming New Year tour. I love these books and these
authors and know that many of my followers will too.
I'm so excited to be able to buy these clean books at Walmart!

Heartwarming Being in Walmart

To say I’m over the moon excited about our Heartwarming books being in Walmarts is an understatement. Thirty-five years ago, when I was living in big city, Houston, Walmarts were only found in small towns in the “Big Thicket” between Texas and Louisiana, my first books came out. I had no idea about how to sell a book, but my husband’s family at-the-time helped me arrange for a signing/giveaway in a Louisiana Walmart. The staff didn’t know what to do with me, so I stood near the door trying to talk to anyone who would listen about the book I’d just written. Over the years, there have been many Walmart participations and I’ve loved them all. The best part about our Heartwarming stories is that they are “safe” to recommend and buy for any family member, from granddaughter to great-grandmother. Our stories have depth, heart, emotion and the characters are so real, as a reader you feel you would “know” these people on sight. They are approachable enough to invite them over for a cup of coffee. Hang with. Share with. And that’s what ALL of Heartwarming is to me. We are a group of editors and authors who are already or are becoming friends. We share our lives, loves, frustrations and sorrows as well as joys. I believe in “happily ever after” and through Heartwarming and Walmart, we’re able to bring more of these moving stories to the people who have been searching for something touching and magical.

Who R U Really? By Margo Kelly {Tens List}

who are youWho R U Really? by Margo Kelly

Thea's overprotective parents are driving her insane. They invade her privacy, ask too many questions, and restrict her online time so severely that Thea feels she has no life at all. When she discovers a new role-playing game online, Thea breaks the rules by staying up late to play. She's living a double life: on one hand, the obedient daughter; on the other, a girl slipping deeper into darkness. In the world of the game, Thea falls under the spell of Kit, an older boy whose smarts and savvy can't defeat his loneliness and near-suicidal despair. As Kit draws soft-hearted Thea into his drama, she creates a full plate of cover stories for her parents and then even her friends. Soon, Thea is all alone in the dark world with Kit, who worries her more and more, but also seems to be the only person who really "gets" her. Is he frightening, the way he seems sometimes, or only terribly sad? Should Thea fear Kit, or pity him? And now, Kit wants to come out of the screen and bring Thea into his real-life world. As much as she suspects that this is wrong, Thea is powerless to resist Kit's allure, and hurtles toward the same dark fate her parents feared most. Ripped from a true-life story of Internet stalking, Who R U Really? will excite you and scare you, as Thea's life spins out of control.

Praise for the book:
"Kelly's first novel is a suspenseful page-turner with multiple suspects, a little bit of romance, and a strong but not overbearing message." --Kirkus Reviews

"Suspenseful novel that's guaranteed to give readers goosebumps--particularly as events heat up toward the end. A good choice for families to read together." --School Library Journal

"Who R U Really? is a fantastically creepy book that is surprisingly realistic and totally engrossing.... Once I opened it, I couldn't close it. Who R U Really is a satisfyingly unique YA thriller that left me guessing up until almost the very last page.... This book is very realistic and I really enjoyed the writing style." --Tempest Books "Based on actual events, the story should be required reading for all teens." --VOYA Magazine

Excerpt
When Tim’s eyes, bluer than an Idaho sky, met mine, my mind turned to mush. He towered
above everyone else at the bus stop, and on this cold January morning he looked cuter than ever
with his bomber hat and rosy cheeks. He shoved his sidekick, Josh, jokingly, and a cloud of
white air escaped Tim’s mouth.
My best friend, Janie, whacked me on the hip. “Omigosh, Thea. Here they come. Smile.”
Her words bounced in rhythm with her black ringlets. She adjusted her new fluffy snow white
parka, and even though it had a hood, she would never smash her perfect curls simply to stay
warm. The crisp air made the tip of her nose red, but the rest of her face remained alabaster
white. We’d been best friends for years, and at fourteen, having a friend made the ninth grade
bearable.
Janie hoped Josh and Tim would ask us to the Winter Solstice dance, but I just hoped to
speak to Tim without sounding like a complete idiot. Tim walked in our direction with Josh right
on his heels. They stopped in front of us, and everyone else hovered to watch the show.
“Thea,” Tim said. I wanted to reply, but no words came.
Josh approached Janie, and I fidgeted with my favorite fuzzy pink scarf.
“Jan-eee,” Josh said, dragging out the last syllable of her name. He eyed her up and
down. “You look like a giant fat marshmallow.”

Excerpt from Shadows in the Curtain

Timothy stuck to her side while people surged passed with compliments, hand squeezes, and the occasional hug. Emmy searched every eye, but only saw excitement from a fun performance or weariness from sitting too long. If anyone had murder in mind, he was as good at putting on a fake face as she was.

No one piqued her curiosity. Until he came. She had no clue what his name was, but the past few weeks she’d seen him almost every morning at the gym. He was much too good-looking, with his rippling muscles and deep blue eyes. She always avoided looking directly at him, though she knew that was as obvious an indicator of her attraction as staring would be. She couldn’t avoid him now.
The wide entryway, which featured plush, faded carpet and wood-planked walls, shrank as he drew nearer. The babble of the crowd faded. He reached for her hand, staring deep into her eyes. Her hand fitted itself into his like he was a magnet. Her entire body leaned toward him.

“You were amazing. So passionate.” He smiled and the room swayed.

Emmy was quite sure the passion she experienced right now had nothing to do with singing or acting. She should draw away but couldn’t force herself to. “Thank you,” she managed, embarrassed by the huskiness of her voice as she tried to catch a breath.

The crowd pressed forward, and he was forced to release her hand and move to the side. His blonde date gushed over Emmy for a second, and then they were gone.

Emmy continued greeting other patrons but couldn’t forget the allure of his blue eyes. He didn’t seem like the creepy stalker type, but she had to wonder. Could he be the one sending the notes?

Chapter Five Cont’d
Brianna

He was suddenly standing, sure that Morgan would be able to at least give them a head start, but Brianna said, “No.”
“We’ll just talk to him. That’s all. We won’t make any decisions until we find out what Morgan has to say.” It wasn’t going to be easy, but they had Aern. And Aern had this new sway.
Brianna stood as well. “That’s not why you can’t go after him.” She’d been thinking about this for days, since before she’d known about Brendan. Since she’d realized what she and Emily were. She didn’t know if it was right, if it was the plan her mother had laid in place, but she wouldn’t be able to live with doing anything different. She had to protect them.
Logan was watching her, waiting. It was clear she wasn’t ready to make this decision. But she didn’t see any other way. “He’s too powerful, Logan. I have to help you.” She glanced at her hands. “I have to give you the tools to keep us all safe.”
It was not what he expected to hear. But Logan wasn’t a fool, and it didn’t take long for him to understand.
They were in over their heads.
There was more danger, something Brianna didn’t see them coming safely through. He stepped forward, eyes on her for a long moment before he asked in a low voice, “How bad is it?” At her hesitation, he said, “You have to tell me, Brianna. We need to know what we’re up against.”
She felt sick at the idea of what might come, at how bad it might get. She didn’t want to tell him that, didn’t want to say that it was all about to be torn away from them. But he was right, they had to know.
“They’re shadows,” she said. “They’ve got every power you’ve ever dreamt of. And they’re coming for us.”
Brianna sat alone in the dim light of the sitting room, ankles crossed under the edge of the chair. Her hands rested on her lap, tattoos staring up at her, a faint glow gathering over the center of her palms. It wasn't bright, not entirely real, but instead more like a tracer, like the trail of a sparkler, fleeting and half-there. She knew only she could see it. She and the other shadows. Whatever this otherworldly aura was, the human eye couldn't detect it, and the Seven were closer to human than shadow. Her power hummed through her, more tangible than the visions of light.
There was a soft click across the room, Logan entering behind her, and she drew back the power. She needed to use it, to learn to control and strengthen it, but she needed to hear Logan more, to see what he'd found out. And using the power exhausted her.
He stepped up behind her, hands wrapping over her shoulders to massage away the tension, and she leaned into him, tilting her head back.

A Little About the Destiny Bay Romances: Sweet Editions
From Author Helen Conrad

"The Destiny Bay Romances take place in the sort of beach town I've always loved--and now I live in one! But writing about beach towns came first and this series is centered on the rich, influential Carrington family living along the California Coast, and in Hawaii. These are good-looking, fast-driving, hard-hitting men and women whose impulses lead them into trouble every time--and inevitably to fall in love.

The original series includes language and love scenes that aren't, for the most part, especially harsh and explicit--but some of my readers from my years writing sweets for Harlequin as Raye Morgan have asked if we couldn't have sweet and clean versions--and I thought--what a good idea!

These are basically the same stories...but with the conflicts softened a bit, the language cleaned up, and no explicit love scenes. There are still a few adult situations, but they're muted. Consider these the PG versions.

I hope you enjoy them!"

Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson Blog Tour, Review, & Giveaway

Prejudice Meets Pride Tour Banner

Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson Book Cover Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson
After years of pinching pennies and struggling to get through art school, Emma Makie’s hard work finally pays off with the offer of a dream job. But when tragedy strikes, she has no choice but to make a cross-country move to Colorado Springs to take temporary custody of her two nieces. She has no money, no job prospects, and no idea how to be a mother to two little girls, but she isn’t about to let that stop her. Nor is she about to accept the help of Kevin Grantham, her handsome new neighbor, who seems to think she’s incapable of doing anything on her own.
Fun, compelling, and romantic, Prejudice Meets Pride is the story of a guy who thinks he has it all figured out and a girl who isn't afraid to show him that he doesn't. It’s about learning what it means to trust, figuring out how to give and to take, and realizing that not everyone gets to pick the person they fall in love with. Sometimes, love picks them.
Amazon

My Review: I thought this was a very fun book. In a way, I could relate to Emma quite well. She is taking care of these two darling little girls and bad luck seems to follow her. She hates feeling like a charity case more than anything. She hates having to ask for help or for a loan or for...well...anything. I get that. I hate having to rely on other people and to have to ask for help. I'm not good at delegating because of that pride. Sometimes pride gets in the way of letting people help a person out. In Emma's case, she sometimes took things too far, but I thought it came off across as almost funny, especially when she started realizing that. Things all become clear later on in the book. I loved the way she came off across as being very right brained--creative and artistic. My heart melted at the way she handled the girls, especially the neighbor girl, Sam.

Kevin. Could two people be more opposite? Possibly, but I loved the way he was so straight-laced and...almost boring, living his life almost exactly the way he was expected to. His left brain definitely loosened up and responded to Emma's way of life and he just couldn't help finding himself in the middle of trying to be her white knight. I loved the sparks of attraction. Both of them tried so desperately to avoid them, yet, like a moth to the flame, it was nearly impossible to do.

I love a good, clean, fun, funny romance and this one was perfect for my mood!

Content:  no language or violence; lots of sweet, romantic kisses. Clean!
