{Music CD Review and Giveaway} Hold On: A Modern Tribute to the Music of Micahel McLean by Various Artists

Hold On: A Modern Tribute to the Music of Michael McLean
by Various Artists

Eric Robertson, a popular producer in Provo, has brought together an impressive list of talented vocalists to sing on new, fresh productions of classic Michael McLean songs. The vocalists include some of the top names from the burgeoning Provo music scene, including Elaine Bradley, from Neon Trees, and Ryan Innes, one of the top contestants on NBC’s The Voice. Eric grew up listening to Michael McLean songs and still feels a strong connection to them. This album is an effort to pay tribute to those songs and produce them in a way that will speak to a younger generation of LDS youth.

My Review:

I listened to a lot of these songs as a teenager and was excited to hear what the modern versions would sound like. Yes, they are more modern and they are catchy, but I'm not sure all of the younger generation are going to cling to them the way that I did. I have a couple of teenagers and I was hoping they would enjoy these songs as much as the songs they listen to on the radio. While I eventually found most of them enjoyable, they're not quite what I was expecting...and my teens aren't clinging...yet.

That said, I really liked the way the cd started out with Hold On, The Light Will Come and love the message. The music is upbeat and fun. One of my all-time favorites is You're Not Alone and this version is set at a faster pace than the original. It took me a few times through to decide that yes, I did like it that way, although the slower version is my favorite. It is fun to have some famous singers take part in this project and to hear them in a different way.

Overall, I did enjoy this cd. I love the uplifting messages that remain unchanged over time. I think those who are familiar with Michael McLean's works or those who, like me, listened to his songs a lot in the past, will enjoy seeing them in a new light, but for the younger generation, it may be hit and miss.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars
