When Annette Downing

My Review: 4 Stars
Annette has a big responsibility to raise her young brothers after her parents die. Full of mischief, as typical boys are, the trouble they constantly get into forces their aunt to send them friends of their deceased parents--five years later. Annette's reunion with their son, Owen, is quite humorous.
For as strong as both Annette and Owen are, they each have their flaws and insecurities. They each have issues from their pasts that they can't move beyond. Owen handles his in a teasing manor, which makes him a perfect man for the boys to emulate, as he can relate to them. Annette is more serious and reluctant in forming bonds, but she's fiercely protective and loyal to her brothers. I admire that quality in her. The boys are charming, the grandparents are hilarious, and the characters are all a lot of fun.
There are times that situations in the book feel a little repetitive, but it's still an enjoyable story. I really liked the romance development in the story, as there is tension, teasing, and humor. This is a great debut novel by this author and she has the potential to write great things. But...the dialog and language used aren't consistent to this time period, so if you're a stickler on accuracy, this may bother you. I also thought it was a little odd that Annette immediately refers to the grandparents as "grandmother" and "grandfather."
Overall, this story is pleasant with lovable characters, clean romance, and a hint of danger. I'm already looking forward to what this author will write next!

Inspired by regency period romance, she wrote her first novel at the age
of sixteen. Because she can’t vacation in her favorite historical time
periods, she writes about them instead. When not crafting handsome
historical heroes, she enjoys baking, sewing, music, and spoiling her
dog. She dreams of traveling to England and Ireland. Ashtyn is currently
studying English and creative writing at Utah Valley University. She
lives in Lehi, Utah with her family.
