Friday Favorites: The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery

Friday Favorites is a weekly meme hosted here (Tressa's Wishful Endings), that spotlights a favorite author, book, series, publisher, cover, blog, etc. Basically whatever bookish thing that you love, recommend, and want to tell others about.

I've been reminiscing this week and I thought about a book that I've read a couple of times and just adored! It's witty and sweet and so much fun!

The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery
First Published in 1926, 218 pages
Description: Valancy lives a drab life with her overbearing mother and prying aunt. Then a shocking diagnosis from Dr. Trent prompts her to make a fresh start. For the first time, she does and says exactly what she feels. As she expands her limited horizons, Valancy undergoes a transformation, discovering a new world of love and happiness. One of Lucy Maud Montgomery's only novels intended for an adult audience, The Blue Castle is filled with humour and romance.

My Review: Valancy Stirling is considered to be an old maid (29 years old). She still lives with her mother and a cousin and does everything they tell her to do. I couldn't understand why she didn't just leave and go out on her own. But when Valancy receives some shocking news, she finally breaks away to live her life the way she's always wanted to live it. Her family is a hoot--hilarious, without meaning to be, and had me giggling quite often, even though they almost border on mean. They are total busybodies. I love how Valancy finally has the courage to be who she wants to be--do her hair the way she wants to; wear what she wants to; spend her time doing what she wants to. Such a sweet, tender story of a woman's first love and quest for a happy life.
