*****--5 stars
My Review: I just re-read this one to refresh my mind in anticipation of the 2nd book in the series. Wow--last things first--what a cliffhanger ending! That said, The
Selection was a great mix of a dystopian, royalty, and dating show. In
the future, the US was overtaken and a new kingdom was formed. The
princes have to go through a selection, selecting from 35 girls, to find
themselves a wife. Some things are broadcasted on tv for all to see and
magazines contact popularity surveys, which have to be taken into
consideration. This current selection is in the midst of a brewing war,
which complicates things.
America Singer is from the musical caste and
becomes fast friend's with the prince when her lower caste boyfriend
encourages her to apply and then dumps her. She is torn and heartbroken,
but does what she needs to do to help her family and herself. I can't
wait to see where this story goes!!
America seems conflicted to
me--she doesn't quite know what she wants, but she's determined to speak
her mind and bend the rules. She tries to stay true to who she is and
not become someone she's not, unlike some of the other girls. I think
she wants to have her cake and eat it too, because she wants the best of
both worlds, but that's not always possible. I really felt connected with America and could feel her torment in
trying to decide what she wants and how to accomplish what's best for
herself, Maxom, Aspen, her family, her friends, and her country.
Content: kissing scenes and a handful of language.
If you are a fan of reality tv, royalty, romance with a dash of Dystopian, you don't want to miss this one!! Pick it up here.
