She would follow him through peace and war.

London, 1811
The London Season is ushered in with a thrilling flurry of invitations, gowns, and parties. But despite her status as belle of the ball, lovely socialite Emma Drake simply cannot fathom becoming entangled with any gentleman of her acquaintance. For in truth, since childhood her heart has belonged to Captain Sidney Fletcher, a man of the sea—and her brother’s best friend. Emma knows that Sidney’s directive to free the Spanish city of Cadiz from French occupation will be dangerous, but when word arrives of his capture, she is frantic. Determined to aid her brother in Sidney’s rescue, she hides aboard his ship and sets a course to Spain. But the realities of war are a far cry from the drawing rooms of London, and Emma finds the man she loves a mere shadow of his former self. When a series of events leaves them trapped together behind enemy lines, Emma and Sidney must embark on a journey fraught with danger—from a bloody hunt for Spanish treasure to the battlefields of war-torn Spain, new threats lurk around every turn. As their flight becomes increasingly perilous, Sidney and Emma must trust each other with their lives—but can they trust the other with their heart?

My Review:
What a sweet story! This is a companion novel to Becoming Lady Lockwood but it can stand alone.

Emma had a brief encounter with Sidney under the kissing bough one Christmas and never quite removed him from her heart or her mind. But as a man of the sea, he leaves shortly afterward. When they receive word that he's in trouble, nothing can stop Emma from stowing away on her brother's ship; nothing can stop her from attempting to rescue the man she loves; and nothing can stop her from persevering through unthinkable horrors to find peace and freedom.

Emma is very spunky and full of personality. She doesn't always think things through clearly, which leads to some frightening situations, but she is full of faith and determination. Sidney is brave and resourceful. His sense of humor carries him through the bleakest of times and he's very easy to like.

The story takes a few intense twists, as these two, along with their unlikely companions, journey by foot through enemy territory. I wasn't sure who they should trust and how they would get out of some of their scrapes. I love it when I can immerse myself in a story. I actually felt anxious because of what was going on. There's no way I would be brave enough to travel through a war zone! I was really drawn in by the romantic moments, too. I loved the little words and glances and found myself cheering them on, even in their moments of doubt. Things don't always end the way I expect them to and there were twists in this one that kept me on my toes.

I'm looking forward to the next installment!

Content: Squeaky clean romance; no language or religious elements; moderate violence due to war (torture, death, etc)--nothing graphic.

  1. I really want to read this one. Only problem is, my library doesn't have it, and I'm trying NOT to buy every book that catches my eye. :(

It sounds like my favorite type of romance--when they start out as friends. And a regency, so that's a plus :)

    1. I wish you could read it, but I totally understand about not buying every good book you see. I have to set limits and I STILL buy books that I just don't have time to read. :) Keep an eye out and maybe it'll appear cheap. Or see if your library can order it in.
