Excerpt:
Kellan needed to find Master Hewitt and get his advice on the presentation. Taking leave from
Osma’s protective eyes, she was told he was in the gymnasium and tracked him down to the area
set up for fencing. He was chatting with King Ian’s fencing instructor while the king and another
man were sparring, dressed in full protective attire. How can they move in that? Master Hewitt
had made her practice wearing only what she had on at the time. She had a few scars to prove it.
Quietly approaching the teacher, Kellan asked if she could speak with him.
King Ian, noticing her arrival and feeling pretty confident with a sword in his hand, walked up
behind her. Taking off his headgear he bravely questioned her. “My lady, did you come to
practice your skill in sword?”
“No, my lord,” she pertly responded, still with her back to him. Short and sweet answers. That’s
what Kellan was trying to stick to. He just made her so nervous. It was very frustrating and
completely bewildering to her. You’d never know though because she was an expert at hiding
her feelings, when she could control them.
“Well, since you’re here…why not?”
“No, thank you, my lord.”
“Oh, come on,” he said and lightly swatted her with the flat of his blade across her backside.
She had been staring straight ahead at Master Hewitt this entire time, and when the king touched
her, her eyes narrowed, and it was all she could do to keep from losing it. She lowered her head
and with a deepened voice, slowly strained another, “No, thank you, my lord.”
Master Hewitt foresaw where this was going and took a step back. The fencing instructor was
very amused and surprised the king was acting this way toward a lady. What is he thinking trying
to enlist a woman into a sword fight? Look at her. She was wearing a blue, fitted bodice gown
that reached all the way to the floor. Her dark hair was up in pearled pins, and ringlet curls fell
down the nape of her neck. Attending a tea party would be more appropriate.
The king, however, was not picking up on any of the subtle clues that he needed to desist and
back away. Speaking again, he prodded her once more with the sword. The next thing he saw
was the ceiling. And the next thing he felt after his back hit the floor, was the tip of his own
sword touching the base of his throat. He couldn’t even imagine what just happened.
The fencing instructor’s mouth was hanging open now, and Master Hewitt once again rubbed his
hand over his face, slowly shaking his head. The boy did it to himself for sure this time, he
thought.
Kellan was breathing hard, trembling, and staring Ian down with fiery eyes. She blinked as if
awakening from a trance, took a deep breath, and slowly moved the sword away from the king’s
throat. She tossed it over to the mat, picked up the sides of her skirt, and ran out the door. Why
do I snap like that sometimes? What if I had killed him? She scolded herself all the way to the
stables for not having self control. The horse she loved awaited her.
