Shunning all media attention, former All-Star pitcher Caleb Scott is focused on rebuilding his career in Japan, far from his past and the horrible tragedy that nearly ruined him. Then he meets Britt, who is everything he vowed to avoid.
But it doesn't take long before Caleb is battling his attraction toward Britt. While she works to uncover his secrets, she can't deny she's drawn to his wounded soul. At a crossroads, Caleb must decide if he can break free from his past mistakes and give love another chance. And Britt must choose between advancing her career--or falling in love.
My Review:
I don't play sports, but I sure do enjoy watching them and especially reading about them. My family is more into basketball, but I love stories that involve baseball and was very intrigued by this one because a lot of it takes place in Japan. Is baseball really big in Japan? It seems like it, according to this story, but I never thought about that before.
Caleb is a star pro pitcher who had a setback in his career and is working on building back up to where he was by playing a season in Japan. It was interesting to hear about the traditions and customs that surround baseball in Japan and I liked how Caleb respected those, even if he didn't understand them. He's a really great guy and that's proven in the story by the way he reacts (or doesn't react) to situations. He has a lot of self-control. Ben, Caleb's twin brother, is a great addition to the story.
Britt is in Japan on assignment as a sportscaster and can't help but fall for Caleb, against all advice. She needs to focus on furthering her career and doesn't have time for love. She is very likeable, but fickle and indecisive.
I appreciate a good, clean romance, but things were very hot and cold with this couple. One minute they're together and the next, they're not, mostly due to Britt. I couldn't help but to root for them, even though the odds were stacked against them. There were a few events that took me by surprise and I love being surprised. It's labeled as an inspirational read, but I didn't feel that religion played a big part.
Content: Clean romance (kissing); no violence and no language; mild religious elements (a couple talks of waiting to have kids until married, a few values/beliefs--not preachy). Clean!
