My Review: This was a really great coming-of-age story. Mattie is in high school and just can't seem to see herself for who she really is. She is very talented in science, as well in caring for her loved ones, especially her grandma, who is suffering from ALS. She has a crush on an unreachable boy in school, Travis, yet she can't seem to do anything more than look from afar. She deems herself unworthy all because of some free bread, but she really has so much to offer.
I loved the friendship that Mattie and Trish had, as well as with Jordan. They would do anything for her and are there for her through the ups and downs of teenage life. Mattie doesn't do all the taking--she is there for them, too. Trish is really pretty and popular, but she doesn't let it go to her head. Jordan has blossomed right before Mattie's eyes and she has a hard time recognizing and accepting her changing feelings, but he is a true friend and so supportive of her wishes. I loved him! I just wish Mattie wouldn't have been so hard on herself all the time.
The relationship that Mattie had with her grandma and her grandma's friends was priceless. She wasn't awkward around them at all. I do wish her relationship with her parents would have been better, but as a mother of two teens myself, I can understand why they were the way they were. I loved seeing Mattie grow a backbone.
This story stayed with me. I really did enjoy the journey.
