In this swashbuckling romance, a sinister plot has just been uncovered and its up to a former patriot and a young nurse to discover who is behind it. Caroline is engaged to the future mayor of Laketown, a man of influence and greatly respected. But all that changes when she overhears a conspiracy behind closed doors. After being discovered, she runs for her life. Caroline needs to report her findings, but whom can she trust? When she asks Jesse Conover for help, the adventure begins.

My Review: 3 Stars

There is so much potential for this story, with these citizens trying to discover a new norm after reorganizing their leadership. All kinds of conspiracies and evil figures emerge in each one of the books in the series and it's intriguing to see new heroes step up to curb the villainous plots.

Caroline is engaged to marry a man that she realizes she doesn't really know and when Jesse, a man of many disguises, arrives to help protect her, of course a romance blossoms. The mystery is gradual, the plot mostly gentle, and the romance is very squeaky clean.

While there are all the makings of a great story here, I was left feeling a little confused, which made it hard to fully invest in the book. We're not given a time period, yet many things make it seem historical (and it's apparently based on heroes from the Revolutionary War)--such as carriages/buggies, gowns, lamp lighters. Yet there are inconsistencies that made me question if it was more modern than I originally thought--mainly with shopping, hospitals, and character dialogue. There is also much more telling than showing, so the characters didn't come to life for me. It's my personal preference to be shown events and to feel like a secondary character or a fly on the wall.

However, I do appreciate that I can pick up a novel that is wholesome and clean with a fun plot.

Content: very mild religious elements; very mild romance; mild violence.
