With their divorce scheduled for the day after their daughter’s high school graduation, Jamie and Kirk have to fix the home’s problems to lift their selling price out of the basement. Working to renovate the home together, they discover secrets—in the home, in their marriage, and in the fertility clinic that helped give them their daughter—and find themselves questioning what true love really is.

My Review: 5 Stars

 

What a touching story! Kirk and Jamie have been married for 24 years and on the outside, they seem to have it all, but on the inside, they're falling apart, just like their aging home. In an effort to find the source of their on again/off again bathroom leak, Jamie discovers a much bigger problem that leads to this couple remodeling their house, as well as inadvertently, their marriage.

 

The story immediately captured my attention, as each chapter is headed with a bit of advice from Romance Renovations, which is a real blog! The very first one talked about caulking and it took me back to years ago, when I had asked my husband to re-caulk the bathtub and he didn't. Finally, I took matters into my own hands and made such a HUGE mess of it all. He came home from work and asked why in the world I let our four-year-old son caulk. We got a good laugh of out that.

I love that Ms. Hoagland doesn't skim over the tough parts of marriage. Unfortunately, the "happily ever after" that all couples crave comes after a lot of hard work. I love the way there are subliminal comparisons to the house and to the marriage, which caused me to stop and reevaluate my own marriage. I think it's common for a lot of couples to get so wrapped up in parenting and the day-to-day of life and to lose touch with one another. Rediscovering one another and realizing what matters are so important. I love the characters and their lessons. I love the reactions to the secrets and the way things ended up. This is a great story, full of emotion and I'm hoping this will be a series!
