An impulsive kiss and a fake relationship. What could possibly go wrong?
When
Will pulls Layla over for speeding yet again, the last thing he expects
her to do is kiss him. And he certainly didn’t expect the fireworks
that exploded when her lips met his. Can he keep his heart in check
around his old crush?
Layla is determined to get her matchmaking
mom off her back. So when her mom witnesses her getting pulled over, she
makes the impulsive decision to kiss the chief of police of their small
town and tell her mom she’s engaged to him. It’s all fun and games
until her heart decides to get involved.
My Review: 4 Stars
Will is getting tired of pulling Layla over for speeding around town in her grandma's bright red Corvette, but he's taken by surprise when she springs a fake engagement on him. Although these two had a brief connection in 7th grade, all these years later, the sparks and interest are still there, but both of them have been burned by relationships and are hesitant to jump into another one--especially with all the chemistry oozing between them.
Small town stories with an edge of danger and mystery are a great combination, especially with slightly meddling mothers and well-meaning friends in the picture. Hale does a great job on weaving these elements together and creating an interesting setting for them to happen in.
Although on the shorter side, I found this story to be well-rounded in the romance, conflict/resolution, suspense, and entertainment aspects, but I felt that the character's intentions toward a potential relationship were very fickle and flimsy, flopping back and forth too much for my liking. I liked both Will and Layla and I'm really looking forward to more stories in these series.
Content: mild romance; mild moments of violence/danger
