I read this story as a kid and loved it just as much then as I do now. I read it aloud to my younger kids and we all loved it!!
The Herdmans are six wild, rude, naughty children who decide to come to church (thinking they'd get free refreshments) and end up as the lead parts in the annual Christmas pageant. Watching them learn about the Christmas story and take it to heart was very touching.
I think sometimes we get very caught up in the hustle and bustle--at least, I know I do. I make a huge, long list of things I want to do and accomplish during the holidays and I'm not able to do everything. I always have a picture in my mind of how things will go and want them to be done perfectly. It seemed the the adults in charge of the play in this story have similar feelings and the Herdmans were not a part of their perfect idea of the play. Yet, the way this story touched their lives was really moving.
