Julie Folk, Jewels to her friends, has a problem. As a newly hired computer systems analyst at a brand new government agency, she and her team have little or no support in their efforts to determine who is attacking America's missile defense systems. In a race against time to determine whether it's the Iranians out for some payback or the Chinese making a power play, Jewels must convince America's powerful national intelligence leadership that the threat against America is both real...and imminent.

Ready for some great interview questions?
1- When did you know you wanted to write books?
The question always seems to come up, “When did I know I wanted to write books?”
For me, however, it’s not a simple answer. I have always loved reading books and knew, like most people, that I probably had a book “in me,” that given the proper motivation would emerge.
My “motivation,” for lack of a better word, showed up just over two years ago when I saw that my kids seemed to be tentative on breaking out from their comfort zones. Being a lead-by-example dad, I announced, “I’m writing a book.”
I decided I liked writing books the first day into the process when my own pulse accelerated as I wrote the story.  This feeling was amplified tenfold when my kids loved what I was writing and kept asking, “What’s next?”

2- What does your writing process look like?
I would say my writing process closely resembles how a forensic pathologist reconstructs a face by using just a recovered skull. I have a picture in my mind of what the final form should look like and begin slowly adding layers. As the process progresses, I will perhaps tweak the cheekbones or the jaw line to fit my changing perspective of the story or of one or more characters.

Review: North for Christmas by Christina Dymock

CoverDescription:

Have you ever known exactly what you wanted for Christmas? As a child, you may have written a letter to Santa, made a wish upon a star, or locked your dream away in your heart afraid that it might not come true if you so much as whispered it out loud. Even as adults, Christmas wishes carry a magic that can't be explained. In North for Christmas, Ruby Jeavon certainly has her heart set on an engagement. It's the first step in creating the family she's always wanted. But things go slightly off course and instead of flying to Italy with her boyfriend, Ruby heads out of town to work as an elf in Nashville. Even though she's far away from her dream, she's about to discover the magic of a Nashville Christmas through the eyes of North Foxwell, her fellow elf and a Christmas expert. Even though North struggles with his own Christmas ghosts, Ruby manages to bring new light to his life. Can Ruby let go of her dream to find what her heart truly desires? Only time--at the North Pole--will tell.

My Review:

It's a lot easier to follow the wish of a heart than it is to set it aside and think of others and that's just the lesson that Ruby learns when her mother sends her to work as an elf for the holidays. Ruby is yearning to go to Italy for Christmas, so her long-time boyfriend can finally propose. But when does life work out as planned? Ruby is hard-working and no stranger to digging in and showing determination to get what she wants. In fact, she's kind of a snob at first.

North is also working as an elf for the holidays. His harden heart needs to find forgiveness and there's no better way to speed that along than to serve. North is a great character. He's so good with his special needs brother, with the many children who come to see Santa, and with the various North Pole employees, but there are still a few walls that need to come down. He's so kind, but full of pride and really knows how to hold a grudge.

There's something magical about Christmas that can change hearts. Just think of the Grinch--his heart and mindset changed with realizations about others and himself and these are similar lessons that North and Ruby learn for themselves. I love stories with growth and transformation, in positive ways, and this is the perfect story to warm any heart, especially with the holidays approaching.

Content: very mild romance; mild religious elements (characters attend church). Clean!

Q and A with the Author

Is there a message you would like readers to get out of this book? What is it?
I want my readers to travel to the 19th century and visit a world where there were candles instead of light bulbs, hearths instead of radiators, people told stories and read aloud instead of watching TV, they wrote long letters instead of phoning or texting, and carted water from wells instead of using taps/faucets! A five mile trip was an adventure, and a sea journey was like a space odyssey. Magic flickered in every shadow, every full moon disclosed a secret, and seeing a lady’s ankle or wrist was sensual and forbidden. A simple infection or a pregnancy could mean death, and periodic fatal epidemics were expected. There was plenty of raw passion and adventure, because every minute was precious and every feeling authentic. I’d also like my readers to feel curious enough to want to read or reread 19th century authors, such as the Brontes and Dickens, who are the real masters of the novel.

Excerpt from Rider of the Crown

Imogen, warrior of the Kirkellan tribes, marries the King of their long-time enemy the Ruskalder. Her obedience is the price of her people’s safety, but she can be pushed only so far:
Hrovald slammed his fist down on the high table. “You will do as I command!”
Imogen stared the King down. Her fear for Dorenna and for Elspeth had drained her ability to fear anything else. “Think again, husband,” she said softly. “You have no right to force me. I am your wife because I choose to be. I follow your rules because I choose to do so. You may think of me as a Ruskalder wife, but I swore oath to a Kirkellan husband, and no Kirkellan husband has the right to insist I not follow my conscience when someone’s life is at stake. So, husband, I intend to return to that room and continue caring for Elspeth North, and you should think very carefully about how far you’re willing to go to stop me.”
Hrovald glared furiously at her. His fingers curled into a fist, and briefly Imogen remembered the treaty, and the Kirkellan, and Ruskalder warriors slaughtering her people. If she didn’t back down, what might he decide to do? Enough, she thought. I’m not going to be a hostage anymore. If he breaks the treaty, it’s on his head, and we Kirkellan will just have to endure. As we always do. She straightened her spine. She wasn’t some frail Ruskalder woman. She was a warrior of the Kirkellan, and she would show this man no fear.

Alison Quinn, Countess of Waxwold, is content with her bookish life—until she’s summoned to be a lady-in-waiting to the Queen of Tremontane’s mother for six months. Even the prospect of access to the Royal Library doesn’t seem enough to make up for her sacrifice, but Alison is prepared to do her service to the Crown. What she’s not prepared for is Prince Anthony North, Queen Zara’s playboy brother, who’s accustomed to getting what he wants—including the Countess of Waxwold.

When the fallout from an unfortunate public encounter throws the two of them together, Alison has no interest in becoming the Prince’s next conquest. But as the weeks pass, Alison discovers there’s more to Anthony than she—or he—realized, and their dislike becomes friendship, and then something more—until disaster drives Alison away, swearing never to return.

Then Alison is summoned by the Queen again, this time to serve as Royal Librarian. A threat to Tremontane’s government, with her treasured Library at stake, draws Alison into the conflict…and into contact with Anthony once more. Can they work together to save the Royal Library and Tremontane? And can she open her heart to love again?

Melissa McShaneMelissa McShane grew up a nomad, following her family all over the United States, and ended up living in the shadow of the Wasatch Mountains with her husband, four kids, and three very needy cats. Her love of reading was always a constant during those uncertain years, and her love of writing grew out of that. She wrote reviews and critical essays for many years before turning to fiction, and was surprised at how much she liked it. She loves the fantasy genre and how it stretches the imagination.

Review: The Sea Keeper's Daughters by Lisa Wingate

The Sea Keeper's Daughters (A Carolina Heirlooms Novel) by Lisa Wingate
Paperback, first , 400 pages
Published September 1st 2015 by Tyndale
Source: I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25018230-the-sea-keeper-s-daughters

Description:

Wingate's third Carolina book follows the highly reviewed, The Prayer Box and The Story Keeper as well as related three novellas.

From modern-day Roanoke Island to the sweeping backdrop of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and Roosevelt’s WPA folklore writers, past and present intertwine to create an unexpected destiny. . .

Restaurant owner Whitney Monroe is desperate to save her business from a hostile takeover. The inheritance of a decaying Gilded Age hotel on North Carolina’s Outer Banks may provide just the ray of hope she needs. But things at The Excelsior are more complicated than they seem. Whitney’s estranged stepfather is entrenched on the third floor, and the downstairs tenants are determined to save the historic building. Searching through years of stored family heirlooms may be Whitney’s only hope of quick cash, but will the discovery of an old necklace and a depression-era love story change everything
.

My Review:

The story started out a little slow for me, as I was trying to figure out how everything and everyone connected, but it quickly picked up pace and had me completely engrossed. Whitney owns two restaurants that are struggling and when she inherits an old hotel in North Carolina, she leaves, to not only try and figure out a way to save what she has, but to try and decide what to do with what she has been given. I could understand her temptation to just sell it all off to get the money to save her restaurants, but what she discovers along the way is more important than all that. So many livelihoods depend on her and her decisions and it's not an easy role to be in.

Whitney is a strong, capable woman, one who hasn't liked to put down roots for awhile. I love the transformation that happens when she discovers some old letters and a little mystery surrounding her family. She is so deep and real--I actually cared what happened to her. I loved that this book turns into two stories in one. We get the current situation and these letters take the reader back to the 1930s. Images are very vivid through wonderful descriptions. It made me think that it's a shame letter writing has fallen to the wayside, since we've now lost out on a way to keep memories alive.

There are several really great characters in this book. Whitney's step-father, Clyde, is a curmudgeon. In fact, I was a little fearful for her safety around him. These letters did more than just entertain Whitney--they brought many people together, formed bonds, and helped them see each other in new ways. Joel, a wayward teen who needs a little direction; Mark, a shop owner who wants to keep his business alive and who is deeper than he seems; and Denise, the cousin with whom Whitney owns the restaurants.

I found deep feeling and emotion within the pages and was caught up in the powerful storytelling. I love the way it comes full circle. The ending felt a little rushed, but I was completely satisfied.

Content: very mild romance (implied affairs, kissing); very mild violence (one character is beat up); no language; this book is published by a Christian publisher, but it's not religious--no religious elements. Clean!

Description:

He asked, she answered—a definite no. Now, seven years later, they’re facing off in court. Sparks will fly.

Becca is crazy about Carson, but with a proposal looming, she finds advice from the only person she can: her amateur-psychologist hairdresser.

Despite his plans for the future being completely thrown off, Carson can't imagine life without Becca. But when the proposal goes horribly wrong, neither one of them dreams they'll end up facing the other seven years later—in court—as enemies. Or with Carson nearly engaged to his boss’s daughter.

Seeing each other again is the last thing either of them expected when they signed on to the land dispute case. And working through the long-buried feelings they have for each other is a huge distraction, with a side of Caramel Frozen Hot Chocolate. After all, they’re supposed to be representing clients, not falling legally in love.

Asked and Answered is another installment in the Legally in Love Series by best-selling romantic comedy author Jennifer Griffith.

My Review:

Have you ever read a book that just strikes a chord with you? This one did just that for me! When Becca and Carson first meet, and fall in love, they are young. She's barely 18 and at the moment, alone in the world. Who does she turn to for advice about these runaway feelings? Her hairdresser. Uh...probably not the best person to give advice, considering she's on her sixth marriage and has a degree to practice psychology, but doesn't use it. Needless to say, this relationship went bad and all for crazy reasons. Fast forward seven years. Becca is a lawyer in her small home town and in a huge case, finds herself going up against none other than Carson--"He was one of the good guys. Even if he defended bad guys for a living." For a man who claimed to only give his heart away once, he's got some big decisions to make in the relationship department, considering that he's dating his boss's daughter.

I love a book about second chances, especially when the first chance was unresolved. The chemistry was leaping off the pages in flames, yet was clean. At first, I thought Carson was kind of shallow because he really seemed to focus on appearances, but my opinion changed as I got to know him better. I love the theme that sometimes what you think is reality isn't, especially when the whole story or reasoning behind a decision is cleared up. Becca learned a few lessons in this the hard way.

The big pluses for me are the characters, the romance, and the humor. Not only are Carson and Becca great, but there are a whole slew of quirky, fun, and entertaining characters, who were really brought to life. Like I mentioned before, the chemistry is incredible and the way Ms. Griffith uses descriptions really ignited it in my imagination. Again, the metaphors and analogies are well done and really added to the humorous situations and I found myself laughing quite a bit. The setting is so much fun! A ghost town? I really need to visit this place. A good romantic comedy has all of these elements, plus a little tension, and they were all tackled in a great way that left me thoroughly entertained and in love.

Content: I think there were one or two mild cuss words, but otherwise clean, as far as language goes; no violence; no religious elements; mild-moderate romance (kissing, one character tries to take things a step further, but it remains clean; great chemistry). Clean!

She seems to drive her classmates away—except for the odd times they pay enough attention to torture her—but she doesn’t understand why. Maura considers herself to be a freak of nature, with her unusually pale skin and an aversion to the sun that renders her violently nauseous. Her belief is only worsened by the fact that almost everyone around her keeps their distance.

Even her own father deserted her before she was born, leaving Maura alone with her emotionally distant mother, Caelyn. Even though Maura is desperate for answers about her unknown parent, Caelyn remains heartbroken and her daughter can’t bring herself to reopen her mother’s wounds. Or is there a more sinister reason Caelyn refuses to utter a word about her long-lost love?

When a cruel prank nearly claims Maura’s life, one of her classmates, Ron, rushes to her rescue. Darkly handsome & mysteriously accepting, Ron doesn’t seem to want to stay away, but Maura is reluctant to get too close, since her mother has announced she’s moving the two of them to Vancouver…nearly 3,000 miles away from their hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania.

If life wasn’t already challenging enough, Maura begins to experience bizarre, physical changes her mother seems hell bent on ignoring, compelling Maura to fear for her own life. Vicious nightmares, blood cravings, failing health and the heart-shattering loss of Ron—as well as the discovery of a tangled web of her own mother's lies—become obstacles in Maura's desperate quest for the unfathomable truth she was never prepared to uncover.

Here are so fun interview questions!
1- When did you know you wanted to write books?  From about age five. I would always narrate things in my brain—all the things around me. I used to make up stories about people I’d see all the time. I even wrote a continuing story for my dance class that the teacher would read at the beginning of class every week.
2- What does your writing process look like?  The past year I’ve been doing a lot of editing for other authors. But that has kept me from writing. I intend for next year to be spent, predominantly, writing. It’s very sporadic right now, whenever I can fit it in, but I want it to become more of a fixed schedule. I like to write with music on or a horror movie on in the background, and also watching my bunbabies at play.

 Author Top 10 Fun Facts

1.       I have four housebunnies, who are spoiled to death. They have their own room, filled with toys, off the living room. Tegan, Pepper, Butters & Beckett.
2.       In college, I lived in a haunted house. The ghost would turn the light on (light bulb with a chain) in the front closet every night at 9:00 PM. No one would ever believe me until they saw it. It moved other things around too in a non-harmful way.
3.       When I was little, I was obsessed with Dinosaurs and used to have this little plastic set I played with all the time.
4.       Eating gluten makes my Rheumatoid Arthritis go crazy, so I make all my cookies, cake and pizza dough with nut flours and can make pretty much anything you could make out of regular flour. Believe me when I say diet is what controls disease. I laughed at my naturopath when she first told me this, but then had to admit how wrong I was.
5.       My favorite colors are red and black…together. I don’t have a single favorite, must be those two together. I try to make as much of my wardrobe as possible in these colors.
6.       In college, I was in every club the English department had and between them and studying, had no free time. But they were nice enough my senior year to name an award after me, which they continued to give every year.
7.       I wanted to write a book since the age of five, but once, I wrote a story for a Star Wars competition. My mother was so critical, I rewrote it (and the second one sucked), completely . I was nervous after that, and it took me six years to finish my first book, in large part because of that incident.
8.       I can be competitive, especially when someone is mean to me. I took an idea to one of my English clubs in college for the upcoming alcohol-free mix off. One of the girls said it was stupid in a very snarky way, so I went to a different club. We did a whole Death’s Angst theme and even wrote a poem about how Death felt cheated, since no one was driving drunk that night. We had a little graveyard with names on the stones like, “Danny Drovedrunk.” We took Best of Show with the huge trophy, and the college kept our poem to use at future mix offs, since we’d followed the message they were trying to get across so well.
9.       It’s my dream to move to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territories in Canada. I moved to Ontario from Vancouver when I met my husband and hate living here. I regret leaving the beauty of the west behind and hope next year to be living in this place, which is so beautiful and offers so much more opportunity. I think it would offer so much more writing inspiration too. Northern Lights are one thing I haven’t experienced yet that I’m dying to see in person. Plus, I love snow, so it’s a win-win.
10.   I was a breech baby when I was born, and almost killed both myself and my mother at birth. The doctor let me go too far for surgery and she ended up being in labor for over 48 hours. Perhaps it was this early brush with near death that gave me such a love of the macabre.
