Audrey Scott is more upset for her jilted cousin than for the best man who supposedly disappeared and caused the cancellation of the wedding. That is, until the cops come around looking for him on suspicion of murder. When that very same best man, Foster McGuire, ends up bleeding in Audrey's closet, she has no choice but to try and get him off the hook for a crime he didn't commit. Too bad there's too many people, from an irritating homicide detective who's way too attractive for Audrey's own good, right to mob bosses, who don't want to see Foster McGuire tell his story. Audrey is no detective. In fact, she's a children's librarian. However, there's always room for some good old investigation work between story times, and she's going to use the skills she knows to follow a trail that starts with murder and ends with betrayal, with a whole lot of guns in between.
Amber Gilchrist lives in New Mexico with her husband and five children. She writes mysteries and LDS Romantic Comedies. Under the name Aimee Gilchrist, she writes mysteries and suspense. She calls her lifetime of jumping from one job to another 'experience' for her books and not an inability to settle down. Amber loves mysteries and a good, happy romance. She also loves to laugh. Audrey is a very interesting character. She looks like she's 12 (she's 31) and is very much into all things books, hence her job as a librarian. She's not your stereotypical librarian though, as it's assumed that they're serious, shy, and introverts. No, Aubrey is determined to solve a murder and takes it upon herself to investigate and search for clues. The situations and shady characters that arise from her investigation propel the plot forward in a fast-paced direction.
I love a story that keeps me guessing and this one delivers in that aspect. It did take me awhile to really get into the story, as so many different characters are introduced and it is sometimes hard to keep track of who is who and what role they play in the book. But I didn't figure things out quickly and the book ends in a way where it is open for more, which is good, because I still want a few questions answered.
There is a romantic angle throughout, although it's not always obvious and acted upon. Some of the characters almost have to grow on you and on other characters for things to develop. I love the little secrets that are revealed along the way.
Audrey is a religious woman and her religion is very important to her. Therefore, there are a lot of references to it and terminology used that are specific to it that might leave a reader who is not a member a little confused or lost in places.
Overall, this is recommended to readers to love a good, clean mystery with some wit.
