Research assistant Wren Bergschneider and her boss, Professor Allan Partner, find themselves targets of a deranged shooter after they emerge from the basement of an old asylum slated for demolition. As their lives take an unexpected and dangerous turn, both the police and the institution’s comptroller want Allan and Wren to cease their research of the historical building.

But the handsome history professor has more at stake than publishing another bestselling biography about Dorothea Dix. He is also quietly investigating the death of his mother, who died under suspicious circumstances while a patient at the mental asylum many years before.

Can they uncover the scandal of the institution before the secrets—or Wren and Allan—are buried forever?

Viper's Nest is a clean thriller that will leave a reader on the edge of their seat! Wren is a research assistant for writer and professor, Allan, and after investigating an old asylum that will soon be destroyed, they find themselves in the middle of a dangerous mystery.

I've never given too much thought to asylums and what the people who were placed there went through, but this story made me very curious, especially as inhumane events were uncovered. Did those types of things really happen in places like this? Allan had a personal interest in this place and had ulterior motives to writing this book--to solve the mystery surrounding his mother's mysterious death years earlier.

Allan is a great character and easy to root for. He's handsome, smart, and very kind. Wren is a widowed woman and works hard to not only help solve this case, but to help with the book and to raise her young daughter right. I enjoyed the pacing, which is on the slower side with spurts of creepy intensity, and the gentle and slow relationships.

Content: mild language; mild violence (deaths and crime, but not graphic); very mild romance; moderate religious elements.
