Thirty-Two Going on Spinster by Becky Monson Review/Giveaway

Spinster Tour

thirty two Thirty-Two Going on Spinster by Becky Monson
Julia Dorning is a spinster, or at least on the road to becoming one. She has no social life, hates her job, and lives in her parent’s basement with her cat, Charlie.
With the arrival of Jared Moody, the new hire at work, Julia’s mundane life is suddenly turned upside down. Her instant (and totally ridiculous) crush on the new guy causes Julia to finally make some long-overdue changes, in hopes to find a life that includes more than baking and hanging out with Charlie.
But when the biggest and most unexpected change comes, will the new and improved Julia be able to overcome it? Or will she go back to her spinster ways?
Purchase your copy for just $2.99!!

My Review
What a fun, and funny, book! Julia is determined that she's on the road to becoming a spinster and uses everything in her life to support that theory. Isn't it true that if you're looking for something, you'll see it? To me, she just seems to be a woman who hates change and does everything in her power to keep things comfortable, even though she's a magnet for trouble. That trouble sure does keep her on her toes and provides the reader with a lot of hilarious moments.
Working at a job that she works to avoid, Julia and her friend, Brown, live for breaks, where they can be found gossiping and discussing life. Brown is a very no-nonsense friend, who doesn't beat around the bush, yet she and Julia compliment each other nicely. They have a great friendship.

When new employee, Jared arrives, he turns everything upside down for Julia and her neat little world. He's a great guy who pushes her. I waffled back and forth between wondering if things were all in Julia's head or not and it was very entertaining.

I really enjoyed the story and watching Julia realize there's more to life than life in the box, but I think I love the way she really cultivates a relationship with her sister. They've never really had one and it shows that it's never too late. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Content: mild language; no violence; mild kissing. Clean!

Excerpt:
“I feel that, as a friend, I need to tell you something,” Brown says to me as we

go outside to the smoking area. It’s near the end of the day and Mr. Nguyen had

a meeting, so I figured I could take a little break.

“What is it?” I ask, not truly caring. I am still annoyed with her. I want to say

something, but there is no point. She wouldn’t care anyway.

“Friends do not let friends go around with that,” she says, pointing to my upper

lip.

“What do you mean? Is there something on my lip?” I ask, walking over to the

door to see if I can see my reflection in the glass. I can’t see anything.

“Yes, there is something on your upper lip... hair.”

Whaaaaaaaaat? “Are you serious? I have a moustache?” My hand

immediately goes up to my mouth, covering it and my upper lip. “But... I... How

bad?” Somehow this is very fitting. A spinster with a moustache.

“Look, it’s not bad. And we do not call it a ‘moustache,’ it’s referred to

as ‘upper lip hair,’” says the perfectly-put-together prom queen. “You have sort

of... always had one. But it was always blonde hair, so I never said anything. But

now, all of the sudden, there are brown hairs as well as the blonde.”

I guess right now would be a good time to die. I mean, I recently had a

conversation with a good-looking man and this hasn’t happened in, well, over

a decade. And I realize it wasn’t a real conversation since I couldn’t say more

than three word sentences. But he was talking to me up-close and—oh my gosh,

he could have seen it. Of course he did because that is how my life goes. I am

an under-a-conference-table-hiding-deaf-mute-possibly-slow-spinster... with a

moustache. Next comes sagging boobs and trailer parks.

"This was a refreshing change of pace for me to read. Some good clean romance was found in it’s pages and that is a rare find these days. It was some great chick-lit. I would not have thought this was Becky’s debut book, it was so well done." ~Liberty Ann (SnifferWalkBooks)

Rewind to You by Laura Johnston Review/Giveaway

Rewind to You Tour

Rewind to You Cover Rewind to You One last summer before college on beautiful Tybee Island is supposed to help Sienna forget. But how can she? This is where her family spent every summer before everything changed, before the world as she knew it was ripped away. But the past isn’t easily left behind. Especially when Sienna keeps having episodes that take her back to the night she wants to forget. Even when she meets the mysterious Austin Dobbs, the guy with the intense blue eyes, athlete’s body, and weakness for pralines who scooped her out of trouble when she blacked out on River Street. When she’s with Austin, Sienna feels a whole new world opening up to her. Austin has secrets, and she has history. But caught between the past and the future, Sienna can still choose what happens now…

My Review: I love a good YA summer romance and for me, this one totally hit the spot! Why didn't I ever have a summer romance like this one?

Sienna is a girl who seems to have it all--star football player boyfriend, wealthy, beautiful, and ready to start college, majoring in dance. But she has some issues. Her father passed away the summer before her senior year in a car accident--and she was driving. Sienna has a hard time dealing with that and when the family goes to Tybee for their annual summer vacation, memories resurface and cause problems for her. Right off the bat, Sienna finds herself in a scary situation...and she also finds herself in the arms of a very handsome stranger.

Austin hasn't had an easy upbringing. He's had to fight to get to where he is, yet he is the kindest, most non-judgmental guy you could meet. He and Sienna seem so different, from the opposite sides of the tracks, yet sometimes, opposites really do attract. What girl in her right mind could resist Austin? Sienna has some serious choices to make.

I really enjoyed the sparks between these two characters. They both have issues to deal with and the way they come to realize what really matters was such a treat. They both make some generalized assumptions about people, including themselves and each other, but there is generally more to a person than just a few facts. I loved the journey; I loved the story; I loved the romance; I loved the little surprises and twists; and I loved the ending!

Content: no language; mild violence; lots of kissing. Clean!

I watch as Sienna glides the ChapStick across her supple lips. Slowly. Temptingly. She must know what she’s doing to me. “You want some?” she asks.
I want to take the ChapStick right off her lips, but I don’t think that’s what she’s offering.

Review & Giveaway: An Event to Remember...or Forget by Melissa Baldwin

An Event to Remember Tour

An event to remember or forget An Event to Remember... or Forget
Sienna Harris is a girl with a plan. Her days of slaving away at Carrie’s Classic Events and More are numbered as she is on the brink of launching her own event planning company. Her relationship with Luke Price is headed in the right direction and they are approaching their one-year mark. The future is looking bright and she knows that life could not get any better . . . That is until her perfectly planned world is thrown upside down by the unexpected arrival of someone from Luke’s past. She receives the shock of her life on the night of the biggest event of her career. Sienna will now have to pull it all together without a list or a plan. The question is, can she do it?

My Review: Does anyone else ever have characters they love to hate? I felt like this one had a few and some of them were surprising--not who I expected to hate.  For me, personally, the story was a little hard to get into because it was in first person, present tense. I'm just not used to reading books that way--as though it's happening right at the moment. Once I adjusted, it was fine and I really got into it.

Sienna is a woman who is basically running the event planning company that she works for and has a devil of a boss. She is very high-strung, yet very good at what she does. She has a plan and desperately wants everything to go according to plan and to fall in place just as it should. Nothing ever works out that perfectly, as she soon learns.

Sienna is so put together and smart, yet very clueless and frustrating in some ways. It seems that most of the "love to hate" characters are very close to her and she lets them walk all over her. It was great to see her take a stand and be strong. I loved the friendship that Sienna has with her besties--Abby and Madison. She also has a great working relationship with Craig and it was fun to see the banter.

Content: moderate language; no violence; mild romance. Clean for an older reader.

American Ride (Stan Ellsworth) Spotlight

American Ride
Host of AMERICAN RIDE, Stan Ellsworth breaks the mold of the stereotypical High School history teacher. Former history teacher Stan Ellsworth tours the country on a Harley Davidson for the television show “American Ride.” Ellsworth’s approach to American history in AMERICAN RIDE removes the “bow tie and sweater vest” of history professors, puts on the “skull rag and denim vest” and breaks down stereotypes. His adventurous spirit and love for the United States is contagious and engaging. His approach is more like an invitation to walk (and ride) with him through the footsteps of history. He hopes the stories and “postcards” from the highways and byways of the country will make American history relevant to today’s audiences, and motivate them to take an active part in the preservation of the values this country was built upon. Now in the sixth season, Stan takes you across the world to see how the clouds of war gathered once again and what led America to enter WWII. New episodes air each Monday 9PM ET/ 7PM MT on BYUtv. If you've missed any episodes, you can catch up with all of the previous seasons online anytime at www.byutv.com/americanride

StanABOUT STAN ELLSWORTH The 6’ 2”, 300-lb muscle-clad Harley Davidson-riding host of BYUtv’s acclaimed American history program, American Ride, would like nothing better than to inspire the next generation of George Washingtons, Susan B. Anthonys and Thomas Jeffersons. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in the Carolinas, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and Pennsylvania, Ellsworth was steeped in the landmarks and stories of American history throughout his formative years. His family lineage includes such historic luminaries as Revolutionary War patriot Ethan Allen; both Generals of the Cival War, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant (also the 18th president of the U.S.); and American folk heroes Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. Ellsworth’s goal—both when he was in the classroom, and now in his weekly television program—has always been to “wake people up” to the stories of our founding fathers and mothers, and to the sacrifices they made in creating this nation. In his gruff baritone voice, he speaks eloquently of our heritage and extols the wisdom and bravery of those who came before. “LET’S TAKE A RIDE” ~ Stan Ellsworth

Review: Star of Deliverance by Mandy Madson Voisin

Star of Deliverance blog tour

Star of Deliverance

Star of Deliverance by Mandy Madson Voisin
Published: September 1st 2014 by Cedar Fort Publishing & Media, 320 pages
Source: I received a copy in exchange for an honest review

Description: Born a slave and outcast, the young healer Emi discovers an ancient disease spreading among her people. Desperate, she races to the Capital for a cure and unwittingly finds herself in a competition to win over the Crown Prince’s heart. Staying in the game provides time to search for a cure, but it may cost Emi her life—or her heart.

My Review: I wasn't expecting this book to be related or based upon scripture, yet it was. Right from the beginning, Esther is quoted, yet this was not a religious book at all. Loosely based on the story of Esther, this story has a life all of its own. Another thing that took me by surprise was the point of view--first person. I wasn't expecting it and it really drew me into the story and made it more personable.

I'm a big fan of royalty stories. I've always been fascinated with princesses and princes. I thought it was interesting how Emi ended up at the palace. She is a healer, or being trained as one, by her adopted father Cen. There is an illness tormenting her people and she is determined to find a way to get a cure and stop it. She joins a group of girls going to the palace and is surprised to find herself as a candidate to be the future queen.  I really enjoyed the story.

I loved the friendships made and the descriptions of the palace life. I loved the brave, strong character that Emi was. I don't know if I could do some of the things she did, including searching for a cure and ending up in the midst of enemies. She had so much courage!

Review: The Missing Heir by Linda Weaver Clarke

The Missing Heir

The Missing Heir (Amelia Moore Detective Series Book 3) by Linda Weaver Clarke
Published: September 20, 2014, 213 pages
Source: I received a copy in exchange for an honest review
Description: Amelia Moore, the founder of the Moore Detective Agency, specializes in missing persons. Her cases have taken her to some very interesting places and put her in some dangerous situations, but she always solves the case. With the help of her partner, Rick Bonito, the business is flourishing. Dell Murphy has passed on and left a fortune to his nephew. He wants his nephew to continue his work at the orphanage in Mexico, but there is one problem. Neal Woods is missing! If Amelia and Rick can't find him soon, the fortune will be turned over to Dell's brother and sister who intend to close down "Uncle Dell's Orphanage." If that happens, where will the children go?

My Review: There are a couple of things that I really enjoy about this series. First of all, I love watching Amelia learn and grow, both as an individual and as a professional. Secondly, I love how each story takes us and immerses the reader in a new and unique setting. The locations are so vivid in my mind. Last of all, the mysteries and story lines are gentle, yet entertaining. There's nothing complicated or graphic about these situations, which is very refreshing.

Amelia and her partner, Rick, are off to Mexico to track down an heir who is missing. Events happen that lead them to believe that someone doesn't want this heir found. I love the way that Amelia and Rick go about finding clues and trying to solve things--it's so normal and natural, which makes it easy to visualize. I hope there are more adventures yet to come!

Content: moments of peril, but as mentioned, it's a very gentle read. Clean!
