Book Blast: Polar Opposites: Super Villain Academy #2 by Kai Strand

Polar OppositesPolar Opposites: Super Villain Academy #2
The supers are balanced. Academies have altered their curriculum to teach both sides of the super power spectrum. All’s well in the super world. Right? When Mystic kidnaps Oceanus, Jeff learns it isn’t all right. Turning to the newly balanced supers for assistance, he panics to find they’ve done nothing to rescue Oceanus. When no ransom request follows, he worries Mystic’s plan never included returning his girlfriend. Frustrated, he’s forced to work with the only super willing to help. Oceanus’ ex-villain, ex-boyfriend, Set. Mystic isn’t the only one hiding something. Nothing about Jeff is balanced. Temper flares result in scorched clothing or flying furniture, and his charm has become an indiscriminating people-magnet. Jeff is convinced, or maybe just hopeful, that his lack of control is directly related to Oceanus being gone. But will he and Set find her before Jeff loses control completely and will they find her alive?

Excerpt
They never talked about how they ended the world. Twice. Jeff glanced at Oceanus, bent over her phone in the passenger seat of his car. A curtain of black hair shielded her profile from view, but he thought he saw her smile.

He reached over and tucked her hair behind an ear. Yep, she was smiling. So was he. He felt his skin heat, but not as a side-effect of his super power ability to create fire. This heat was due to thoughts of Oci running her small warm hands down his back and tilting her face up to accept his kiss.

“ How about a movie?” Oceanus asked.

“ Which one?” Jeff replied, scanning the traffic and then his girlfriend.

Oci’s thin arms, delicate wrists, and bird-like legs that barely reached the floorboards, all gave the impression she needed protection and caring for. Whereas, with her super strength, she could lift the car they drove in onto two wheels if someone were trapped underneath.

“ Oh, perfect!” Oceanus flung her hair over her shoulder and straightened in her seat. Her smile illuminated Jeff’s peripheral vision as he concentrated on traffic. “The one I want to see starts in forty-five minutes. That gives us plenty of time to get there, get popcorn and some good seats, and watch the previews. I love the previews, don’t you?”

Jeff glanced at her again. The devilish glint in her eye made him frown. “What movie?”

Oceanus peeked through thick black lashes. Jeff was pretty sure she even batted them a bit. “What movie, Oci?”

“ Accidental Hero.” At Jeff’s groan, Oceanus chuckled. “Come on, you have to admit the storyline looks kinda familiar. Besides, the special effects look amazing. You love that crap.”

Jeff stared at the traffic and said nothing. He knew it was useless. He could mount the best argument against seeing the movie, but Oceanus always got her way. Cursing his Oceanus-shaped soft spot, he turned at the next intersection and headed toward the theater.

The whiny guitar tones of the heavy metal song Super Villain erupted from his cell phone. He looked at the display and saw Mother’s number. “Can you answer that?”

Reaching for his phone, Oceanus said, “You know, now that we aren’t technically super villains anymore, you should consider changing your ringtone.”

King of BadKing of Bad: Super Villain Academy #1
Jeff Mean would rather set fires than follow rules or observe curfew. He wears his bad boy image like a favorite old hoodie; that is until he learns he has superpowers and is recruited by Super Villain Academy – where you learn to be good at being bad. In a school where one kid can evaporate all the water from your body and the girl you hang around with can perform psychic sex in your head, bad takes on a whole new meaning. Jeff wonders if he’s bad enough for SVA. He may never find out. Classmates vilify him when he develops good manners. Then he’s kidnapped by those closest to him and left to wonder who is good and who is bad. His rescue is the climactic episode that balances good and evil in the super world. The catalyst – the girl he’s crushing on. A girlfriend and balancing the Supers is good, right? Or is it…bad?

Review: The Donahues by Ayelen Barrios Ruiz Pagano

The DonahuesPublished February 14th 2014 by Safkhet Soul
My Source: I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review

Description: On Emily's sixteenth birthday, she discovers a letter that tells of her long lost father, who not only wants her back but is also filthy rich! Tensions between her and her mother were never very good, and with this letter, they escalate to where Emily moves out for the summer to her new/old family - at their opulent summer home. Find out how Emily wrestles with her feelings, finds love and balances her two families in "The Donahues".

My Review: I can't even pretend to know what it would feel like to find out on my 16th birthday that I was adopted. That's exactly what happened to Emily. Emily seemed to have a pretty normal life up until that point--an older brother, a mother who worked hard to provide for her and loved her dearly (even though there was friction between them), and a fire fighter father who passed away heroically when she was seven years old. Her whole world turned upside down with this revelation.

Emily was a very conflicted girl, but then again, she is a teenager. She seemed happy one minute and very angry the next. There was a lot of yelling that went on. She wasn't very nice to her best friend, Stephen. She used him for her convenience and when she needed to take her frustration and anger out on someone, he was the target. He wasn't exactly perfect either--he would be her BFF one minute and then would shut off and become very angry at her. I have two teens, so I totally get it--emotions run high and immaturity abounds. Emily lied a lot--to her mom and to Stephen--in order to do what she wanted to do. But when she found out that Stephen told someone a lie about their friendship, she was very upset--it's okay for her to lie, but not him? She said, "...I thought about what he might infer out of that phone call. Besides, he had lied to me and to Jason, I couldn't forgive him, and giving him a call would be doing just that."

Some of the character development was a little inconsistent and choppy at times, but I really enjoyed the storyline and the way things occurred. As always, I loved the lessons learned. There was a little mystery going on, but it was pretty obscure until the end and I would have liked to have seen that developed a little more. The themes of family and money were pretty consistent to real life, which made it very enjoyable.

Content:
language--3-4 words (mostly "s")
violence--talk of murder, not descriptive
romance--mild kissing

Book Blast: Deadly Fun by Pam Richter

Deadly Fun Deadly Fun by Pam Richter
To everyone aboard the luxury cruise ship, Dan and Linda Duncan are the perfect couple; married, gorgeous, and in love. But Lo is actually working in disguise and undercover, with an assumed identity. She routinely uses her unusual beauty to seek out information for an independent detective agency associated with the FBI. Her boss understands she has a checkered past, with time spent in prison, but she's also smart, and has a law degree. During this investigation of a deadly enforcer for the Mob, they discover murderous ties to Linda’s own family. By the end of the voyage she has chased suspects through the tropical islands, been in physical confrontations with knife, fist and firearms; the deck is awash in blood. Can she survive the deadly fun cruise—and her boss—who may prove more deadly than the Mafia men she uncovers?

Praise from Amazon Reviewers: A fun read, yes. Darkness, danger, and death lurk within the labyrinth of corridors, passageways, and public attractions spread throughout the upper and lower decks of a large cruise ship. Exciting, page turning! Passengers with hidden identities and agenda. Mafia mayhem. A little romance and a lot of action. Pamela Richter keeps you wanting more. Deadly Fun was a fabulous book. I loved how the characters were so easy to fall in love with. I felt like I was reading a wonderful spy adventure that took place on a cruise ship. Who says it is against the rules to fall in love with a co-worker. Lo and Lance fight their feelings for one another over the course of this book.

Excerpt: Whoa, he warned himself.  He’d only known Lolita for a few days.  Pointless to be having: serious thoughts about a woman on such a short acquaintance.  He had to remember that she was a felon.  Prison did strange things to people.  She might be flawed beyond redemption, hardened to the extent that she couldn’t really care about anyone.  He’d have to take it slow and keep his wits.  She was so beautiful she could turn a man to putty.  Besides that, he had to remember that she was an actress of considerable talent.  He didn’t think she had ever lied to him, but he couldn’t be sure.

Author P.M. Richter: Pamela Richter lives in West Hollywood, California. She has a degree in Psychology from Northridge University. Pamela was property manager for Nansay, Corp. a multi-national corporation. She has been a dance teacher for Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire Dance Studios. Review: Rebel Princess by Janice Sperry

Rebel Princess blog tour

The Rebel Princess Published: June 2014, Cedar Fort Inc., 156 pages
My Source: I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Description:
Meet the upside-down fairy-tale princess! Raven Perilous is not nice because nice princesses get locked in towers. When Prince Charming shows up, Raven—who is not in distress—decides to show him who’s boss. This enchanting adventure, filled with magic forests and mystical creatures, will captivate fans of fairy tales everywhere!

My Review:
Raven is not your typical princess and as much as I love princesses, this was refreshing! I loved the way Raven is so confident in herself and how she tries so hard to help herself before asking for help. She isn't helpless and meek at all. The love-hate relationship between Raven and her twin brother, Edgar, is great! They're so different from one another, yet really there for each other when it counts.

One day, a new boy shows up in school--Eric Charming and Raven decides instantly that he's her nemesis. I felt a little sorry for Charming. I loved his "true love." The twists added to the classic characters who showed up in the adventure were a lot of fun. Things can have more than one way to end and this really proved that.

This is a perfect middle grade book for those readers who love good, clean, adventurous fun.

Content: no language; mild fairytale-type violence; no romance. Clean!

Review: Prom Impossible by Laura Pauling

Prom Impossible

Published: May 1, 2014, Redpoint Press
My Source: I received a copy from Xpresso Tours in exchange for an honest review.

Description: 1 girl + 1 prom + 3 guys = Prom Impossible!

Cassidy decides her senior year, including prom, will be about Michael Greenwood, the boy destined to be her soul mate. One problem. He hasn’t figured that out yet.

But certain events meant as innocent pranks—that weren’t completely her fault—introduce her to Zeke, the reformed bad boy. And cutting deals in the boys’ bathroom with Jasper, the hottest guy in school, lands her in a complicated web of half-truths that spirals out of control.

At the end of the year, she’s dateless the day before the big night but risks a lot more than her pride if she can’t find a way to fix her mistakes.

PROM IMPOSSIBLE is a modern-day Shakespearean romantic comedy in the world of teens, true love, and life.

My Review: Prom Impossible starts out with a bang--almost literally. Cassidy is caught setting off smoke bombs at school and is sentenced to a summer camp for troubled kids. She meets a former bad boy, Zeke, there and they have a partnership full of friction. She is determined to win her dorky friend, Michael, over because she's convinced that he's her soul mate--but he doesn't seem to think the same way. Jasper, one of the most popular guys, ends up being a part of her plan to make Michael jealous and that opens up a different can of worms.

Yes, I get the whole Shakespeare relation, but I had a hard time connecting with Cassidy. From the things she does, to the things she says, she is front and center in the spotlight, even though she claims she doesn't like that type of attention. I felt that her whole life was a twisted mass of half-truths and lies. She even resorts to stealing and cheating to save herself. I really would have liked to get to know the real her, because the glimpses were that of a fun girl, but I often wondered who she really was and if she even knew. I didn't like the way she stepped on people to get to where she wanted to be--she didn't treat people very good. Jules, Cassidy's BFF and cousin, wasn't much better in the likability department. Would a true friend let you take the complete blame for a prank gone wrong that was your idea? Probably not, yet Jules did just that.

One of the great parts of the book was Carter, Cassidy's twin brother. He didn't get wrapped up in all of the drama. He was his own individual, doing things that wouldn't seem popular, but he didn't care and that made him all the more popular and likable. I also liked the lessons learned, even though most of them were learned the hard way. Being a teenager isn't ever easy, but sometimes a person just needs to stand up for who s/he is. Choices don't ever come without consequences, both good and bad, but it's also nice when one learns from the bad ones and makes changes to his/her life. Overall, I enjoyed the story.

Content:
language--a few mild instances (mostly taking the name in vain)
violence--none
romance--non-descriptive kissing; rumor of sex (not detailed and not true).
Clean!
