With the pleading whisper and the catch in his voice, shivers ran up my neck. I glanced into his eyes, taking in the deep blue with flecks of gold and how they shimmered—and how strands of sandy blond hair lay across his forehead—his nose, so straight—his lips so perfect and eager for mine. His face broadened into a brief smile as he leaned forward, his kiss soft.

About the Author:

Tina Peterson Scott was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. Books played an important part in her
childhood, and for much of it, she could be found nestled against a branch high in their pecan tree, reading. Her favorites were fantasy, and mystery. It delighted Tina when her mother read to her from Grimm’s Fairy-tales and the stories of Hans Christian Andersen.

Tina and her husband have seven children and a growing number of grandchildren. Other than large family get-togethers involving lots of food and fun, she enjoys writing, watercolor painting, long walks, ice cream, and traveling to Europe—especially to her father’s ancestral home of Denmark.

Everything about James makes Emma yearn for a life on land she just can't have. When Emma’s brother disappears on her watch, James is the only person she trusts to help her save him. But even if they can save her brother, nothing can prevent her return to the sea. Whether she likes it or not, Emma is changing—unable to breathe without yielding to the tide—and it's only a matter of time before she's forced to surrender forever. 

My Review:
I was so lucky to be able to read two great mermaid books back to back! I really enjoyed the take on this one. It was very creative in how mermaids come to be.

Emma is such a great character and one that I absolutely adored! She has a younger special needs brother and she is so good to him. She's so helpful to her parents and is a good student, too. After a tragic incident at the end of her junior year, she's very hesitant to date again or to become involved with boys at all, especially since her time with her family is running out.  

James is new in town and he's determined to break Emma's walls down. He's used to scrapping his way through life, fighting for what he wants. He's got a rough bad-boy image, but appearances can be deceiving. I fell in love with him and his tender heart. He reigns in his emotions so well and is great!

I love the way this story unfolded. It was suspenseful with a dash of mystery, full of toe-tingling romance, and very imaginative. It ended in a way that left me wanting more and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Content: moderately clean (some innuendo, attempted rape, boy and girl spending night in same house, but nothing happens, naked merman with no details, mention of Emma changing into swimsuit, not graphic); moderate language; moderate violence; very brief mention of a character going to church, but no details. BY THE TIME SHE HIKED down the steep embankment and around the tide pools to her cove, the pressure in her chest squeezed so tight, black spots floated in her vision. Not a good sign. It had only been five days since her last swim— usually she was good for seven. 

Emma hung her bag on a rock that jutted out of the cave wall and stripped off her clothes, breathing deep, squeezing her hands into fists to avoid the panic creeping up on her. Panicking stole precious air from her half-converted lungs, and she was already on the verge of passing If she did pass out, she couldn’t get to the water, and if she couldn’t get to the water, this terrible pressure wouldn’t ease, and if the pressure didn’t ease, she would soon stop breathing altogether. It would be hours before anyone missed her and came looking, and by that time, she’d be shriveled like a washed-up fish, and probably just as dead.

By the time she’d put on her suit, her vision blurred and she had to step carefully, trailing her hand along the wall of the shallow cave so she wouldn’t trip and hurt herself before she got to the water. Finally at the edge, she sucked in a last breath of air and dove, relieved as slits opened up to gills in the side of her neck and water filtered through them, finally allowing her lungs to expand.

My Review:  Life can be rough at age 14. Miranda is trying so hard to figure out her place in her family, in life, and what she wants. There are so many changes and expectations placed on her and when a wish ends up with surprising results, she realizes that maybe the life she had wasn't so bad after all.

 Miranda is a pretty typical teen. Her emotions are fickle and her loyalties are conflicted, yet fierce. The relationship she has with her parents is realistic, as is her friendship with her best friend. I enjoyed seeing the realizations and growth that took place within her. I also enjoyed watching her find her first love. She has some serious decisions to make, especially for one so young. I could feel her struggle with making those choices. Mermaids are fascinating creatures and I love the way this story is done in an imaginative way to show an option of how humans and mermaids interact and associate. 

I love the way it all wrapped up. Some of the twists and turns took me by surprise, but that ending. Oh, how I loved it!

 Content: Clean romance; mild language; no religion; no violence.

Authors spend a lot of time and effort avoiding the temptation of shiny new ideas, because chasing other stories will never get you a finished manuscript. But the best inspirations hang around, waiting in the corners of your mind, tugging at your attention until they've grown too monstrous and delightful to be ignored. These are the stories that are most fun to tell, the ideas that will not be turned away.

I'm happy to report my newest title is just one of these monsters. King of Ash and Bone began niggling at me about midway through the Descendants Series as a simple idea: a magical apocalypse. A heroine with steadfast determination came in next, followed quickly by the handsome anti-hero who just might have what it takes to break her resolve. And of course he would have something to hide that might test them both. I found myself researching end-of-days scenarios in my spare time, gathering images of winged beasts and deserted cities as this new world grew and grew, forming its own brand of chimera and bursting into a second realm, complete with problems of its own.

The Shattered Realms series is certainly lined up to be the most complex I've ever written, and I can only hope it catches readers' hearts and imaginations the way it has mine.
